There's no way they're calling it the Switch 2. Nintendo has never done that. They always either add adjectives, or come up with a completely new name. The one time they didn't, with the Wii U, it was a disaster because they made it look and sound like an optional Tablet accessory add on for the original Wii, by showing Wii Remotes in use in addition to the Gamepad and refusing to show that the console itself had a completely new design in advertising. Not to mention that there was a major, and still relatively recent failure of a conceptually similar product called the UDraw Tablet anchoring the perception that the Wii "U" Gamepad was something similar. Certainly, calling it Switch 2 wouldn't cause the same problem, but why would Nintendo, after thirteen successes on their longstanding model and only three failures, decide to start doing things the way everyone else is doing them? Why would they do themselves the disservice of putting a 2 next to it.
Even Microsoft were smart enough not to make the Xbox 360 the Xbox 2. Because it would have been behind the Playstation 3.
It was no coincidence that they chose a number starting with 3 either. It was done in order to position the 360 as being a peer to the PS3 on an intuitive subconscious layer.

I think the fact that the Switch's schedule is dead empty is pointing to Switch 2 being revealed. People said they won't announce it earlier this year because of Peach game and it wasn't. It wasn't announced before Tokyo Game Show because of Zelda and it wasn't. Mario and Luigi comes out next week and the only game after that for 2 whole months is Donkey Kong port. From there there are no more known release dates because Nintendo did not have a direct in September after having one almost every year straight. If it's not announced now maybe in December when there's literally nothing going on.

I'm doubtful about this supposed holiday boost for a nearly 8 year old system. Last year had a brand new Mario and Zelda and hardware sales still declined. This year was pretty fucking empty. How many people who want a Switch still don't have one? No one that waits 8 years to finally bite the bullet to buy a console will buy one at launch. No one will buy the new system with no games on it over the cheaper one that has games you can buy right now. The GBA kept going for a while even after the DS. You've never looked at the Japanese numbers, have you? The Switch despite its age and game prices still has the industry in a literal stranglehold for two reasons:

1) Games of every type.
You are spoiled for choice whether it be platformers, JRPGs, WRPGs, musous, strategy, Otome etc. You can find anything on there and it creates draw to say nothing of the big names like Mario Kart, Animal Crossing and Smash that serve as perfect entry points.

2) COST.
Despite never getting a price cut and software only going on sale digitally, it's still the best value proposition on the market. $500 gets you an OLED, a year's premium subscription to NSO for all of the retro games and two vouchers for high ticket first party games. The only thing comparable is the Series S but lolXbox.

And yet they still expect to sell 13 million which is more than most systems will do. Especially at this stage in it's life.
