I heard this game was set in the same world as FF1, and I have to wonder what possible benefits can be reaped from that decision. The first game has a skeleton of a story with no memorable characters besides Garland, who only appears at the very beginning and the very end. I also remember the circle of crystal sages, but those guys didn't even have names. Any new story using this setting is going to have to invent 99% of it from scratch, so why even bother using this world instead of making a fresh one? It can't be to make the game more marketable: the number of people who completed FF1, enjoyed completing it, and continue to care about its gossamer-thin narrative, must be small indeed.

It's just a prequel that Nomura thought up when he was making Dissidia and it's an anniversary game to celebrate the whole series. The setting barely matters because every level is actually areas from other FF games, like Mirage Tower gets turned into the Crystal Tower from FF3.

Anyway, SOP is really fun. The DLC is the kind of thing you are probably better off playing after a few months, since you need to grind out old levels for Bahamut Bucks to unlock some dialogue and decently high level boss AND THEN you can move on to the next one.
Base game is fun, though, and added difficulty from Bahamut mode is also nice, but you don't really get a chance to min max properly since you're still cycling out your weaker gear

Am I supposed to be turning off the NPC party members in this game? Most of my time with SOP was spent playing co-op with two other friends, and it felt completely overwhelming - in the sense that we could just bruteforce everything without needing to engage with the game's deeper mechanics, resulting in none of us really feeling like we "understood" the game. We played up until the second Bikke fight when the city goes all dark and oftentimes, all the enemies were dead before fights really got started. Can anyone else relate to this experience and does the same kind of thing happen with the AI buddies? Am I fucking myself in a different way if I play solo?

problem with coop is that it doesnt really synchronize player levels and gear which means people who are just slightly ahead will dominate in your game.

I guess it might be alright if you need help easing into the mechanics, but you really should practice using Jack's different defensive options (guarding, parrying, and soul shield). If you're running low on break gauge, switch to your other job. Each of your jobs has its own break gauge.
Just equip your highest level gear. You'll need to engage with the loot systems for postgame build autism, though.
