I watched the cartoon unlike everyone else in this thread and it was genuinely soulful and closer to what DMC should be than it has been in a long, long time.

Sometimes it's hard to pull yourself out of the current moment, even when watching a show based on a video game from 2001 (or rather, from a franchise that started then). What that means is that the scenes of the vice president ordering federal agents to capture unsuspecting people who were just doing their jobs was hard to take. Yes, it's fiction, and yes, the VP and president are clearly meant to be Bush/Cheney references, but in light of today's world, it merits a mention, because I probably won't be the only person made uncomfortable by the scene.

I'm not here for White Rabbit and the out of nowhere cartoon artstyle. They messed up something that was actually interesting.

The issue with series about writing smart characters is that for them to be good the writer must also be smart. A lot of writers can easily make a clever plan but be retarded about actually getting to that plan and pulling it off in a plausible way.
Akiyama in Liar Game makes his plans based on a knowledge of game theory and optimal play that accounts for the opponent also being able to play optimally. Part of that is that Liar Game needs Akiyama to give plans to other characters that they can follow, so he needs to outline the areas of failure. But a lot of writers probably have no clue about game theory so they need to rely on, "Oh the character just knew that it would happen like that, because he's smart." I think the most BS "he can do it because he's smart" Akiyama ever really got away with is being able to figure out a dealer was placing the cards in a specific order and that's something that a normal person could in theory do with a pen and a paper.

That Shankar failed at the most crucial aspect of making an adaptation. If you must break away from some story aspect of the original IP, it should be to simplify context at most, not to make your own hot take spin on an established IP. I halfway understood it with Castlevania, given that that series is tracing back to a very, very early series where there was minimal context to what was going on. But DMC has a well established plot and throughline for its story, and instead he decided to make this weird fanfiction that reads like something a broody 15 year old would keep in their drafts on Wattpad. The only thing good in it is the fight scenes and occasional fun references, but this should have been a slam dunk. Instead we end up with some weird Bush era anti-imperialist screed that completely fails to gel with anything else in the games.

The bodies are just separate hosts wielding them while they hope for someone who can properly use them, it's the entire twist of their design that makes them unique and what the whole intro cutscene is hinting at, the whole thing works since the bodies are headless.
So you can understand how completely retarded and ignorant it would be to give the bodies heads and turn them into generic demons and completely remove the polite affable talking sword aspect. So of course that's what the show does.

The idea is that demons have something that humans lack which is a combination of something physical and something mentally.
In multiple instances through the series we know that demons use human blood to enhance their strength, from rituals to various devices to extract blood and the whole point of the Qliphoth tree being to harvest and compress enough human blood that is cited as the reason Mundus became the strongest guy in the demon realm. Human blood canonically makes demons stronger which is a scientific explanation as to why half-demons are stronger.
But thematically, the writing has always emphasized the importance of the "human spirit as more relevant than the power boost human blood has for a demon. Demons by and large lack that emotional strength that humans do that allows humans to fight harder than demons ever could. They lack that emotional element which is why "Devils never cry."

don't listen to Anon Babble or Anon Babble in general. it is Castlevania S1 tier, a mediocre but watchable kinda DMC3 story with no Virgil. If you want something 1.1 to the games, don't watch it, otherwise it's not bad and I think Dante is done overall pretty good. The most critical things are real world ideologies in DMC and Lady being even more a girl boss. And it has sympathetic demons (fuck netflix for that)

Because they have an inherit belief system that there's no bad culture, just different cultures, that every criminal is capable of some redemption or commits wrongs because of wrongs committed to them by a worse wrong and that all form of nationalism is bad if it's from the imperialistic side. When they see a fictional world that runs contrary to these cores, the very cores of what decisions they vote for or push that have clearly hard defined good and bad factions their brains fry and they label it as a racist dog whistle and another case of "The Other" in writing which was the huge classical attack they've long done on LOTR or any fantasy universe.

Factions being multi layered is nothing new, like everything else the hostility shot back when mainstream medias creative moral goal is to wipe clean any sign of "The Other" in all media by not just creating their own world building but targeting and readapting any world building that doesn't follow their belief system. I think another good example that's actual vidya is what happened with the Zerg and Kerrigan in Stacraft 2, but I can at least see the half logic with Kerrigan being such a money maker character that they wanted an excuse to drag her out for marketability purposes and make her fit better in the post comic book film writing era and it's harder to sell a character that commits genocide to kids.

jap demons are usually the exception: they are usually half-demons or yokai (a supernatural creature), at least humanized with virtue and morals, that actually do good: trough actions, they fight evil and save the day, they set an example that even those that seem evil may be good if they act good
they aren't "just another race" portrayed as victims that we should pity because they are actually pretty much foreigners and minorities

It's ok to rape these demons. They're evil.

It's fairly decent until episode 5 where it goes "WHAT IF, *SOME* DEMONS ARE ACTUALLY GOOD AND ALL HUMANS ARE EVIL" but it's expected of Netflix and LA writers. So I'd say, half of it is good/decent and the other half is what you'd expect a Netflix adaptation would be.

But overall, it's not even meme worth it. DmC provided some unintentional funny moments and tons of material to meme about, this on the other hand is just sad.
