This will suffer from all the same problems of "open world", but without many of the benefits (like exploration being useful).
I just don't see the point.

it looks very similar to Burnout Paradise, just in Mario Kart universe
It looks like Forza Horizon, but it makes much more sense to drive through trees in FH than in MK.
Nah at least burnout had actual shit to do in it's world, here you just drive around aimlessly doing nothing
From what ive seen you drive on empty highways
I honestly don't fucking get this game
now you can drive IN BETWEEN the courses instead of going from course to course
But so what? What is the real benefit of this?

Haha i dont get it either
but without many of the benefits
The only "benefits" of open world are that developers and marketers don't have to put any effort into their jobs anymore and executives can buy their sixth yacht with the inflated sales they get from slapping the open world label on a game.
like exploration being useful
Mario Kart already had exploration, it's called finding shortcuts in the tracks to lower your times. With how linear, wide and samey the tracks are in World, that won't be possible anymore.
Open world games' "exploration" of wandering around aimlessly in an empty grass field or half-empty city has always been inferior to what was possible with traditional level design.
The benefit is that they'll use it as an excuse to make less courses, and the courses will be more homogenous thanks to the day night cycle and the need for them to connect. Prease enjoy!

This worries me as well. I guess bye bye to tracks like Ribbon Road or the Bathtub track from 8?
Is this going to cause people to decide 8 was actually really good?
8 is already the "ultimate MK" in the sense that it drives incredibly well, have tons of tracks, good item balance, you can't improve much on it.
I agree but the "new = bad, old = good" crowd loved to shit on it.
No, it will always be boring on rails slop
DONKEY KONG IS HOLDING A BURGER
Yes, there's also a takoyaki power up.
Am I the only one who doesn't get what's supposed to be open world about it...? It just looks like Mario Kart except the tracks don't loop around anymore. I think. Am I missing something? Is that enough to make it count as open world?
There's free roaming in between and around the tracks. We actually still don't know how this is gonna work, like if it's gonna be like Burnout Paradise, or some kind of story mode.
There's free roaming in between and around the tracks
But you still have to reach the same endgoal as everyone else, so...
Also from the footage Im not really seeing this, all the tracks just look like straight lines to me. I really dont get it.
Tracks still loop, they just break off at points to the highways
But you still have to reach the same endgoal as everyone else, so...
You actually do that outside the races, if you do it while in a race you get taken back like usually. Like I said we don't really know how this is gonna play, but you can drive around the world while outside of races and explore everything.
it will.be kino
it has a mode you can free roam the map and a mode where you also drive in between the normal courses. otherwise it's a normal mario kart game
Gps are fucking ruined thanks to the need to have players go from track to track through highways heavily inspired by Sonic Forces level design and these highway segments taking 2 laps out of the next course. All the gameplay Ive seen has bored me to tears. They somehow made the sundae trash course even more worse. 24 player races is a fucking mistake.
You can still pick an option to race in traditional 3 laps races, dummy.
I just don't see the point.
It's okay when Nintendo does it.
b-b-but
Hush. It is okay when Nintendo does it.
It still remains as the best bang for your buck. It just needed more of that charm and freedom to do out of bounds skips Wii has in spades. Im sticking with this for the time being.
Please explain how you can do 3 laps of a straight line track. Skipping half the maps in the game is not a valid explanation.
didn't find the super secret blue shell koopa general so you can't use blue shell during races
oh no no no
Still have to do the gps to unlock more content, retard. Also most of the track designs are linear hallways too to account for 24 players.
Please explain how you can do 3 laps of a straight line track.
There's two modes:
A: You have to drive in between each course.
B: You just go from course to course
If you choose A you only race 1 lap in the traditional circuits, if you choose B you race all 3 laps.
Of course, some tracks aren't a circuit, so they work like Mount Wario on 8.
That shit's so gay. When is someone gonna make an online mod for Double Dash
Stop trying to dodge the question. Explain how to do 3 laps of straight line tracks.
At least half of MKWorld is straight line tracks that don't loop back around. Explain how 3 laps is going to be possible in this mode.
If you choose A you only race 1 lap in the traditional circuits, if you choose B you race all 3 laps.
I fucking hate how modern Mario Kart is afraid of any race lasting more than 2 minutes. B should still have 2 laps minimum on the actual course. repetition is a huge part in what makes courses memorable.
Explain how to do 3 laps of straight line tracks
I already answered here:
Of course, some tracks aren't a circuit, so they work like Mount Wario on 8.
As much as I love DD, lets not kid ourselves that playing with others of similar skill levels it will just be a competition of who can get the lightning bolt and have their driver hold it until the last lap.
So you admit that is a lie and the "option" to pick traditional 3 lap races means skipping a huge chunk of the game.
Pathetic subhuman shill. You are why Nintendo think they can charge $100 for games within the next 2 years
I think it makes some items more useless, like the bananas.
You can probably blame fortnite or whatever caused the battle royale trend. It'll probably devolve battle mode into that.
that's another good reason why single lap tracks suck ass that i hadn't even considered.
they said during the treehouse that there is more to do in free roam they are just saving it for the mario kart world direct
Hoping this means we’re getting mission mode back. It’s been 20 years
they're gonna surprise us with a full GTA mode. your gonna have missions where biker yoshi asks you to steal a meth stash from Waluigi's crew. all those edgy mario cartoons will become real.
Speaking of:
Direct shows off Knockout Tour
everyone is calling it "Battle Royale Mode"
It's fucking Elimination, we've had this shit since '90s arcade racing games, goddammit.
