The PS1 outsold the N64 by a ratio of 3 to 1.
What a massacre
For context its a more lopsided victory than the PS4 over XBone (2 to 1)
How did Americans and millennials manage to convince people that this was remotely a close battle?
Sony has never lost a generation war
The kind of American kids who ended up getting into games journalism and computer science careers were the ones whose families had the money for the N64 and its expensive fucking cartridges.
ps1 has more games
ps1 has better games
better storage format allows for bigger games
somehow the weaker console with less games, and little to no 3rd party support is better because nostalgia
Okay, and?
Except 7th gen.
Sony pretty much tied with microsoft, and outsold by nintendo. Though Wii is hardly a 7th gen console by technical specs.
I was the only kid in my neighborhood that had an n64. All my friends had a psx. They would come over to my house to play smash bros, battle tanks, and golden eye while one of my friends would bring over their psx. We'd spend the afternoons and weekends jumping back and forth between the systems. No one cared which system was better. The n64 is what brought us together despite selling less
Okay...? Who the fuck cares in the age of emulation?
The Nintendo 64 knew how to do 3d games better than the PS1 from the start. Super Mario 64 featured Mario having 360 movement with satsfying physics and movement and levels that featured swimming, flying, climbing, parkouring, platforming, koopa shell surfing etc as well as decent understanding on how to make a 3d level with technology that allows for a wide range of movement. Ocarina of Time also took advantage of N64's controls well and Nintendo already had a good understanding on how to make a 3d adventure game and how to utilize storytelling via cinematic cutscenes and camera angles.
The playstation struggled with this, especially before they actually started using analog controls.
It was 27M to 20M in North America when the PS2 launched. PS1 then sold another 13M to poorfags that couldn't afford a PS2.
In the rest of world outside of North America it was 62M to 12M.
at the start
Okay, and? This just sounds like typical tendie cope. The ps1 still was the better console. This is objective fact. Maybe if nintendo just switched to discs and made the n64 a little more powerful instead of wasting dev time on a failed add on, the n64 would have been better.
Spyro mogged super shitio 64
The ps1 still was the better console
Because?
the fact nintendo had a better understanding of 3d graphics and controls early on compared to Sony is "cope"
Saturnfag thread
Like 70% of the PlayStation fanbase are turbo normalfags that either grew out of gaming or dont care that much about it nowadays (probably have a ps4/5 but dont use it much besides streaming services or whatever f2p, shooter or Sony game is hip at the moment).
Meanwhile most of the people that had N64s are still into Nintendo or videogames so that's why you see more nostalgia towards it, internet being also american-centered for so long also made it look bigger since NA was where the N64 sold the most.
I like both games. I genuinely have no idea why you're console warring over ancient consoles in the age of emulation.
Console wars were always built around jealousy and sour grapes, because you generally had one and so had to compare your console to the competition while trying to prove that your choice was "better" and you're not missing out on anything
After emulation became common this sort of argument is a huge waste of time. You can play both n64 and ps1 games easily, for free. So who gives a shit.
A bulk of PlayStation's legacy was developed in third world countries, where it was the first affordable console due to relative ease of piracy.
Yeah pretty much. All the kinds came to hang out with the N64 kid and play their games while you'd go home and play your Playstation solo. Nobody cared.
The PSX is the better console in terms of software library for sure. Many games here are all time tops for me. Parasite Eve, Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Ridge Racer Type 4, Einhander (see a lot of shitposting against this one lately but those people are wrong), Final Fantasy VII, etc. etc.
But I am really glad that I had an N64 at the time and that I grew up in the "culture" around it.
There weren't many games, but everybody played the same games more or less. Of course your ass is playing Banjo Kazooie, what else are you gonna play? Elmo's Letter Journey? Madden? Golden Nugget? This combined with so many 4 player games made it easier for me to fit in with a group and we were all "Nintendo gamers" you know?
I really only turn on the console (same console, 28 years and going strong!) for a playthrough of Star Fox 64 or a couple races in F-Zero X/Cruis'n Exotica once or twice a year these days but the memories will be forever.
Because the playstation went on to have more and better games after they got a handle of 3d. And 3d wasn't the only thing the ps1 offered either. Keep coping though, tendie
99% of nintendies are casual gamers that never grew up and are now manchildren that will eat whatever slop japanese disney doles out to them
FFVII has aged terribly. Mario 64, Paper Mario, Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, Banjo kazooie and tooie, and even RE2 were all on N64.
console with lost of games beat console with some games
holy shit!!!
Ps one has crash123 , ctn, medievil, spyro123, final phantasy, gran turismo1&2, metal gear soild, castlevania sotn, tony hawk pro skater12, ridge racer, tekken3, tombraider123, armored core, tenchu, kingsfield, digimon world, lego island, heart of darkness, sillent hill, resident evil, dyno crysis, duke nukem. Ps1 hads a sick library
PS1 was a CD player that could play games
PS2 was a DVD player that could play games
PS3 was a Bluray player that could play games
Sony always wins.
because of easy cd piracy, not because of amazing games
all the best selling systems had piracy
PSX/PS2/DS/3DS/Switch
even today I struggle to think of 5 must play gaystation games
Ban steam chart threads. Wait
FF7 is awesome, so are all the other games you listed
Ps3 was way more. It was an all in one sony media player. It could read and play just about any weird niche format sony was pushing at the time.
Growing up, everyone has an N64 and no one had a PS1.
Majority of other millennials I meet had the same experience.
I wonder what this phenomenon is called.
t. lived in Tennessee, Arkansas, and Oklahoma
Because most people didn't have both consoles therefore friends would argue over which was better. This begins the console wars. Like any kid who had both was spoiled as shit and acted like an ass
It's called having selective memory. This often occurs as a coping mechanism.
How about minidisc smartass?
I liked all video games and had no preference as a child. I literally remember ever video game memory. Are you retarded?
just about
The power of language, smart ass
EVERYONE had one
Also EVERYONE called it PSX
You cretins living in your cave only know 2-3 people and think everyone is magazines.
The N64 was very popular here. Whenever you hear someone talking about how no one played N64, you are talking to a third worlder.
The minidisc wasn't pushed anywhere other than the UK.
N64 was so overrated. Banjo kazooie is for kids. The legend of smellda is boring and clunky. PS1 has all the good RPGs and disks are easier to collect. i even like to listen to sugar ray with the cd player. All the games look better on PlayStation too.
listening to sugar gay
N64 actually aged well, the games are still fun, no loading no bullshit no gimmick except 3D
except Japan and Europe of course.
You can damage ps1 disc by looking at them too hard
Sales are irrelevant, it's the games that matter. And that's where the N64 really fucks up, because holy shit, it doesn't have any games. Of the 295 games released in the US, almost half are sports or racing games. Nothing wrong with that at first, but how many N64 sports or racing games are playable?
The N64's library is abysmal and the fact that there are so many people in the United States who praise this console shows how poor Western culture is when compared to Eastern culture when it comes to video games.
For those who don't understand what I'm talking about, look up videos of exclusive Japanese games for the PSX and/or Saturn, and you'll understand.
I owned an N64 as a kid, then I got a PS1 in 2000 for cheap, and with a bunch of games. I like both platforms for different reasons. I like how both consoles feel unique to each other, something sorely lacking in today's consoles.
Now you're just making up silly names for countries
because ps1 to n64 sales were roughly 1:1 in the US, the ps1 audience is almost entirely third worlders.
playstation is just that much of a joke
More actually.
You can fix scratched discs with toothpaste on god
or because over 100 consoles were released in the 90s and the N64 is still top 5
Thanks to atari Sega looked like gods so does everyone else
i used water and prayer, extended my dino crisis 2's life by at least 5 years after it first start fucking up.
PS1 > Saturn > N64
saturn
Ya, the console that flopped even harder than the N64.
america america america
Yeah most normies who owned n64 had only 2 3 first party games and then let the console gather dust
Shame they couldn't keep it up and nowadays it's the opposite
Saturn
Are there any saturn-only games worth playing?
I only know of Mr. Bones.
As an elementary school student at the time, all I knew was some people had Playstation and others had N64. It seemed pretty even on the school yard chat.
