Why was the PS2 such an overwhelming success as a console?

that's sasha grey

It was cheaper than a DVD player.

This

this

it had a built in dvd player that you didnt have to buy a stupid fucking add-on for
what were they thinking

DVD player and a console was too good to pass up.
t. Argued my mom about it so she could buy me one.

/Thread
POS console.

You're not allowed to say the actual reason anymore (affordable DVD player) because there's some Leddit revisionist history by zoomers who definitely were not born when it came out. It had some good games, but also more shovelware than any console in video game history, so it wasn't the immaculate library zoomers like to pretend.

I only remembered having to buy a remote. I completely forgot that fucking thing taking up one of the controller ports.

dvd player and backwards compatibility

Incorrect.

she's an old woman by now

What's her @?
My dad bought us a Refurbished PS2 and it stopped reading blue disks.

The lens is dirty. Open the console to clean it and it will work again.

fast and furious was about using tricked out high end cars with 100k engines and nos systems all just to steal dvd players. the ps2 was like $1000 cheaper than other dvd players.

Didn't read. I was there, it was true.

You are right but the price was close to a dvd player, meaning that for an extra 30-50 dollars your kid got his brand new video game entertainment system. Better that than a dvd player plus n64 or xbox hueg

Actually console itself was pretty shit with graphics worse than any competition. Almost any multiplat game was better on xbox by a mile

False.

So people bought it because it was a PlayStation 2.

We need exact time frames. DVD players were 400-500 and considered a luxury since going to theatres was the standard and not owning movies. The prices significantly dropped when more people bought PS2s for the built in DVD player.

I did that and it stopped working after a while

We need exact time frames

That's from the month the PS2 launched, October 2000.

Dust is impeding the lens and the infrared laser can't read CDs through the dust.

Yeah but Sly/GTA/KH was kino

Two things for me

1) DVD player as mentioned before although the dogshit picture quality of the PS2 diminished that pretty quickly

2) that was really the tail end of the rental era and the PS2 had such a deep library that a lot of the lunch conversations at school would revolve around 7/10 multiplats. I-Ninja, the first True Crime game, Spider-Man 2 etc. Easy to pick a PS2 gem out blind.

Best console launch title ever.
Other console simply couldn't compete, also, you could watch dvd's on it.

They bought it because their kids nagged them to get it. Parents weren't keen on a brand new game system but one that doubled as a dvd player, which they were going to get anyways, is easy. Kids knew that was their best chance to get a new gen console, unless they got a job and paid for one themselves.

Made for browns (The console as well)

fat ps2 i originally had read and saved ps1 games no problem

slim didn't

What happened?

Works on my machine

Nice anecdote.

owning movies was common as fuck. vhs existed retarded. laser discs were high end luxury ones at time too. lots of competing tech to replace vhs trying to catch on being bought.

This. I knew guys that put off buying a dedicated DVD player because they knew the PS2 would play movies.

the dreamcast failed because it wasn't a DVD player

is there a collection of store employee waifus?

Why was the PS2 such an overwhelming success as a console?

it still contains the most legendary video games, the stars were aligned for that console

I bought PS2 to play games but I also knew it would play DVDs so I told my parents not to waste money on DVD player and instead just buy PS2 for that. PS2 was also the first console I bought with my own money from wages of my first summer job.

what were they thinking

You had to pay licensing fees to the "DVD Forum" for selling something that can play DVDs, so Microsoft did that to avoid having to pay the fee for every console sold and moved it to the remote.

Like others said, it played DVDs and CDs, and it came with MGS2: Sons of Liberty. It's hard to put into words what it was like having a brand new PS2 as a teenager just learning to drink beer and 420 ayy lmao.

Huge games library with tons of exclusives, AND backwards compatibility
Price point was affordable for even upper lower class families
DVDs were the hot new shit and it could double as a DVD player
Massive leap in specs from PS1
Looked cool as fuck, I mean you could stand that shit up on its side if you wanted to

No one cares. Post a video of her spreading her pussy.

7/10 multiplats.

This is what made me stick with it despite it being the worst out of the 3 consoles at the time.

It was *always* marked down to like $249.99 for the fat model for forever. Walmart always did shit like this and made the console cheaper. Idk if Walmart or Sony ate the cost. Then it went down to 199, 179, then 119... It always came with a game of your choice. I remember the one I bought came with a choice of 2 games and a free memory card of or a second controller. I took the memory card. Ps1 games were sold along side ps2 games as well and they all worked on the ps2. You could get movies for $5 and they played on the ps2. If your ps2 console died, you'd just go back to Walmart and get another one and some free game you haven't yet played. Don't wanna pay full price? GameStop had used consoles and your choice of 5 free games. You couldn't get away from them. I had like 5 consoles each with dead dvd drives, that I simply gave to my friends who would repair them. You couldn't walk down the street without finding one in the trash with a dead power supply or a dead dvd drive, so even poorfags could with some elbow grease get one running with very little effort. The market was flooded with cheap hardware. No artificial scarcity bullshit like Nintendo were pulling. It was just a good console that played video games that you would watch movies on.

Why was the PS2 such an overwhelming success as a console?

that's the goat that's why, so much great games in there, I'm still discovering new great shit after all those years

I opted for a PS2 to continue from PS1 looking for the newest Gran Turismo

Thanks

Did you like GT3?

It didn't matter if it was the worst, it was the cheapest. Cheapest console always wins. It was open to so many games. Even if some were garbage, at most you were out $20. You could just take it to gamestop and trade it in.

lady lookin like she gets paid 25 bucks an hour in 2001 money

cheap

could play dvds

graphics where a huge jump up from previous console era

tons of amazing games in an age where you couldn't just get everything on pc

released an entire year before gamecube or xbox

could still play ps1 games where gamecube wasn't backwards compatible with 64

Didn't get it. Played it at a friends house and I was good I guess. I was a late adopter and got GT4.

muh DVD player

If it were true why didn't the PS3 do so well? I never saw anyone use the PS2 as a DVD player, VHS was cheaper and ubiquitous launched. And by the time the DVD format picked up the players were dirt cheap. The real reason the PS2 sold gajillions is was a follow up to the motherfucking PS1 and had all the hot games normies wanted like the GTAs, the Tekkens, the Metal Gears, etc..Then Sony kept slashing the price while supporting it till very late. In short: it had games and was cheap.

?

Despite being the weakest of the three of its generation, it was the easiest to make games for.

If it were true why didn't the PS3 do so well?

Because everyone already had a dvd player by the time the PS3 came out, most likely from owning a PS2.

Times were different

Despite being the weakest of the three of its generation

That would be the gamecube.

I really wish the Dreamcast or GameCube would have been the popular console instead. It's fucking amazing how absolutely shit the PS2's video quality is when the fucking N64 had MSAA on every game and the Dreamcast supported VGA out of the box. Sony going full retard with relying on interlacing tricks to get performance out of it is the entire reason PS2 emulation still sucks to this day and there's a fuckton of issues if you upscale.

Why buy PS3 to play DVDs if you already had PS2 to play DVDs?

I think he meant Blu Ray idk what blud talmbout otherwise

blu ray never truly replaced DVDs

No 6th gen consoles did AA except (very rarely) Xbox. You should get the real hardware instead of developing your opinion on emulation.

If it isn't AA that makes GameCube titles look so much smoother than PS2 titles, what is it? Is it just the deflicker filter? The only 6th gen console I don't own is an Xbox, but I've seen them and know they look great. PS2 looks good on a CRT, but it still looks jaggy as fuck to the point that early games like Armored Core 2 feel like they're stabbing your eyeballs.

Launching with full(ish) backwards compatibility was a huge feature that other consoles of the time didn't really have*. The Genesis/Mega Drive required an extra $35 attachment to be backwards compatible with a console no one owned. The PS2 had BC out of the box with the first console to hit 100M sales. If you already owned a PS1, there was no reason to not continue with the PS2. If you had an N64 then buying a PS2 meant you got access to the entire PS1 library and the future PS2 library. I knew 1 kid that had PS1 but literally every kid in my school that had an N64 went to the PS2

This combined with the massive leap in graphics from the PS1 (which lacked proper 3D hardware to handle the Z axis leading to the signature warping textures and wobbling polygons) carried it until the Christmas 2001 line up was released. From then on it was the massive PS2 library that allowed it to outcompete the Xbox and GCN.

How dare you denigrate Ricky Bobby's contribution to the seventh gen.

Also this. DVD was a massive upgrade over VHS (no rewinds, way cheaper to print a disc than make a tape cartridge) but Blu Ray was just a visual upgrade that most people are too stupid to hook up. You would be amazed how many Blu Ray players or HD cable/satellite boxes I've found in people's homes that were still using composite to carry the video.

Gamecube did use a flicker filter. Most games run at the same resolution as the PS2. Xbox also has a very aggressive (to the point it's comical) flicker filter. PS2 games rarely used filters which gave games a sharper, clearer look. Gamecube also scaled the framebuffer, slightly stretching and softening the image.

I see. Why is it that any GameCube title can be forced to display in 480p, but only a small handful of PS2 games supported it? Is it due to something the PS2 hardware is lacking, or was it mostly a case of devs not including it since EDTVs were so rare at the time? If you could simply tell the PS2 to output a progressive image like you can the other 6th gen consoles it would still solve a fuckton of problems.

That would be wrong.

Why is it that any GameCube title can be forced to display in 480p

Many do not support 480p. Anything "forcing" it into 480p is homebrew. Which can also be done on PS2 with GSM. Gamecube only has around 200 games that officially support 480p, which is about the same as PS2, which has a few less than 200 (180.)

Emulation has jilted the discussion and created a series of delusions due to the ease of one as opposed to the other. PS2 did do weird rendering tricks. It did run at a lower res than Xbox, but the Gamecube did too. Many PS2 games, like Gamecube do have a 480p framebuffer, and are easily forced into 480p and with a scaler the narrow displayed picture can be adjusted to be a proper 4:3.

Xbox was the only console with overwhelming support for progressive scan. Even Dreamcast was spotty and behaved erratically depending on software. Xbox still has some 480i only games like Winback 2.

since going to theatres was the standard and not owning movies

Yeah, that $8 VHS rack at Walmart was only for the rich.

It was a cheap DVD player.

Why are wagies forced to wear these boner killing khaki pants?

came here to say this

Many PS2 games, like Gamecube do have a 480p framebuffer, and are easily forced into 480p

Is this the same as PCSX2's "no interlacing" patches, or are there different ones for hardware? I've always found those extremely hit or miss.

Is this the same as PCSX2's "no interlacing" patches

Those are for games which use field rendering, those types of games can't be forced to 480p and are always 480i. When forcing 480p on unsupported games results can be mixed, some games have broken video playback or their framebuffer is 512x448 which is 8:7 and appears narrow if not scaled. Most Renderware games do proper 4:3 480p when forced, games like Rayman 2 and Tony Hawk 3. Some like HL1 display the narrow 8:7 framebuffer in a 4:3 area.

looked cool

great sequels to ps1 games

powerful enough to keep up with evolving software leading upto the x360

backwards compatibility

played movies and music

Impossible to fail. In todays standards an equivalent would be unimaginably strong, eclipsing even PC.

Because the switch 2 wasn't invented yet

Best console with the best games at the time, also played DVDs

It was a PS2 AND DVD player rolled in to one. I cannot describe to you how it felt seeing such a generational leap in vidya form PS1 to 2. We got our in 2001, seeing the leap from GT2 to 3, Tekken3 to DoA2... That Christmas we ate good with a mix of dvds and games.

It was the first console gen with graphics good enough for it not be complete nerd loser shit

LMAO!
You aigh't, Ranjesh.

The PS2 version of DoA2 is basically the worst one. It looks better on the Dreamcast, and obviously far better on the XBOX with DoA2U.

given the retardation of nintendo in choosing its media formats in the 5th and 6th gen this wraps around to being a genuine compliment. yes you should build your console around the dominant media format, who knew.

Yeah as a kid seeing the shows on techtv talk about Final Fantasy X made me want one so fucking bad

Yeah nobody cares, try telling that to 11 year old me and my bro, we didn't care and the Dreamcast was a faggy sonic machine only 1 person we knew owned (he tormented frogs and his little brother was dropped on his head as a baby and there was something seriously wrong with him)

That's because 11 year old you was a casual retard who didn't know the Dreamcast was a great Arcade gaming machine.

I'm white trash

I don't care, anon. That's a good 90% of the board.

before social media: pretty girls worked at retail

after social media: pretty girls think they're too good for retail and they're right because simps give them free money on OF and Twitch

Was it a skit?

t. dreamcast sega fanboy is still mad

It's literally Sasha Grey.
I had no idea she worked in retail before porn.

the ps1 was a monster success, it was a paradigm-shifting improvement on that

cheapest DVD player on the market

wasn't terribly expensive either way

strong year one library, full of new titles and hotly anticipated sequels, most of which remained exclusive

beat its competition to the market

dreamcast doesn't count and you know it

It was simply a phenomenon, enough that Sony got high on their success and released the $600 Nogames 3 because they thought the brand would do all the work.

Literally who

it was what? 400 maple dollars and it had great games library of amazing experiences, a DVD player included in that price when most dvd players at the time WITHOUT a gaming console were like 800$. my dad still bought a dvd player for living room but when i asked for a dvd player for my bedroom it was a no brainer cuz it was a console AND a DVD player for LESS than what he paid

pic related was my first game for it. 2003 xmas.

fdsfsd.png - 222x297, 123.4K

Gamecube was actually the strongest.

People will say

Muh dvd

But Back compat was also a large reason why alot of people bought it
It could play every PSX game with no hassle or extra attachment like consoles of the past so why would you not buy one if you owned a PSX before
So there you already locked down a install base of 100 million gamers

Gamecube was like taking an olympic sprinter and cutting his legs off. Such a stupid fucking console.

Good games

She's cute. Is she on insta?

Lol no

Inb4 the rushed RE4 PS2 port

The competition was literally the fucking Dreamcast, the Gamecube and the Xbox
Sega had extremely bad business sense and literally had a civil war, Nintendo deliberately crippled their console by using tiny discs and goofy controllers and Microsoft had to bribe people to port games to their console
If you wanted a RPG or a sim it was on the PS2

lol
microturd, ninturd and segaturd lost

giant technical leap from PS1

dvd player

That was it. DVDs in itself was a pretty massive leap in quality for home movie viewing and you could just buy a PS2 which played them as well as the new generation of games. It was the best 2 in 1 entertainment system you could get. Not to mention the PS1 had cemented in some decent franchises by that point(Tekken, Twisted Metal, Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy, Need for Speed)

xbox and gc had dvd

cheaper than a dvd player at the time, playstation 1 was a pretty big success for a first console, good lineup and great specs for the price

there will never be another PS2 unless we get some new kind of physical media that is only supported cheaply by consoles. ultra giga mega bluish-cyan ray XTXHD comes out, it's on a PS6/xbox 720, then you'll get some numbers similar to a PS2

stop the count!

s-l1200.jpg - 1200x1200, 161.77K

Xbox was the strongest by a longshot. It just had the uphill battle of gaining a new fanbase that wasnt Nintendo or Sony. Its biggest powermove was inheriting Dreamcasts library of decent IPs that gave it a nice boost(Crazy Taxi 3, JSRF, Dead or Alive 3 were all very early titles)

This

Cost more than buying a gamecube and a dvd player seperatly

gamecube had a weird fucky wucky panasonic thing mentioned in xbox came out later and was a totally unknown quantity at the time, because microsoft hadn't done games yet like sony or nintendo

simple as

GC did not have DVD capabilities. And Xbox had the unfortunate timing of coming out almost a year later and being a new contender to the console battle.

PS2 won because it had better tech and came out first. Xbox 360 did the same thing in the following generation which is why PS3 was a slump.

It was cheapest console, it had exclusive and good games, it was developed at the right time during a high time for both video games and home media in general. I've had a PS2 for maybe 7 or 8 years and the tray has never had a DVD movie in it ever, but I guess that was important for moviefags back in the 2000s. Also games at that time changed from kid games like Spyro and Crash to more adult games like San Andreas and Manhunt. It was our generation's new thing.

On ps2 you need to buy an add-on to be able to save your progress
And I recall this xbox dvd kit being the same price of the 8mb memory card

the ps3 in retrospect is the best console because it had:

free online

ps2 backwards compat with ps1

even if you didnt get the fat ps3 they remastered a shitload of the best games for ps3

online functions like netflix etc not that i cared

bluray player

but I guess that was important for moviefags back in the 2000s

My dad bought it mostly because he wanted a dvd player. and secondly to place our NES, which by brother had recently smashed with his fist for freezing too much.
(yes, we were poor)

The DVD player was massive normie bait. Even if most people just used it for games, it was still cheaper than buying a DVD player by itself. Places like Blockbuster switched to DVD really quickly and they were distinctly better than VHS.

shit forgot to add, that for the first year, we only had the half dozen PS1 games he raided from a bargain bin for it, no memory cards even to save lol

I agree. It just suffered from coming out an entire year after the 360. Everybody had an Xbox by the time the PS3 launched and I remember it being distinctly more expensive.

People forget the backwards compatibility was also a big selling point. You just needed one console for new games, old games, and movies. None of the other consoles could boast all that.

it had games

It was, at the very least, a huge selling point. One of the ways I talked my parents into getting one.

It basically snowballed from the success of the ps1 and on top of that: DVD player.

All of this because Nintendo were cunts who didnt want to work with sony.

she's probably 45/50 now

how does this make you feel

The PS2 would've sold well even without it but the dvd player is what made it the best selling console of all time. How much would it have sold without the DVD player? maybe 10-30 million less is my guess

people were rich so everyone could afford one, that's literally it. consoles are a dead market now since everyone is on the verge of bankruptcy

DVDs were super crisp and modern for it's time, and PS2 was the cheapest one.

PS1 actually has the best library in videogame history. PS2 might be a close second tho.

PS1 actually has the best library in videogame history.

and it comes full circle with the ps5 having no games. like pottery

For me it's the other way round

Over 500 exclusives

Over 4000 games in library

I still love PS1 and it is close, 1 has more nostalgia for me

zoomer retard

BEEG PP Adventure

my man
that game was the best thing produced by sega ever

The jump graphically from PS1 to 2 was ridiculous, let alone the library. The DVD was icing on the cake. We'll never see a jump like that again.

She is a married woman.

I have no idea WHY the ps2 was so popular, and I was a teenager at its peak. It just was. Everybody cool had one. The other consoles were acceptable but a little cringe.

Trends for youth don't really make sense, it didn't really have anything to do with the games it's more like it had a sleek black design and a less kiddy name.

water-wheel.gif - 498x294, 1.27M

Ericb is a faggot spic, we shouldn't take anything he says seriously

Easy to pirate in Brazil Southstreets, I got a xbox who had the same thing + emulators.

Dreamcast was meme, GameCube didn’t have a large library, and the Xbox was literally a Halo box. Also the PS1 BTFO’D the N64 so Sony was the popular brand.
