Which brings up to Expedition 33. A game that is a JRPG in every mechanical way, except it was made by the French. A j'rpg. And unlike a lot of American "JRPG-inspired" games, there is no cynicism to the JRPG elements. This game isn't a turn based RPG with timing elements and a persona-like UI because of some bizarre condescension and contempt for the thing you're doing, but out of a genuine love. FFXIII was justiably lambasted. It was a shit game. Square's issue is their games are so story-driven that their development cycle is chained to it. If there are any story rewrites, assets are scrapped which leads to sections being reiterated ad nauseam. Last decade of Final Fantasy has had this issue and it balloons the development budget to such a degree that they have sell a nippillion copies to be successful and their lower budget games are expected to bail out their AAA underperformers.

It's not impossible for Westerners to do this stuff well, but it's like the subtleties that make Japanese media what it is completely fly over their heads, so they opt for shallow, surface-level imitations instead.

the ff7 remakes are horrible. I don't even mind the battle system but just after playing Remake alone I was sorely disappointed, and I hadn't played the original FF7 before the Remake either.
It's a small segment of the original game artificially stretched out, and then padded with ridiculous filler that doesn't service the narrative or expand on worldbuilding at all. And the few things it does try (the lights that supposedly brighten up the lower level) are hilariously inconsistent because the lower levels get a ton of natural sunlight, to the point where Intergrade adds even more sun bloom to the lower level.

Despite appearances the content of 16 was not really mature past the demo, it avoided any serious political questions in favor of blowing up crystals and God to magically save the day. Compare Jill and Maelle as the two lead waifus and there's no fucking competition. It also helps that 33's gameplay is far superior since it actually has a difficulty level and parrying is tougher than anything in 16, and 33 has decent equipment + character progression.
