I haven't read Revelation but I assume it sucks because of the same reasons KOTOR 2 beats KOTOR 1 and ME2 beats ME1: Karpyshyn cannot write compelling characters.
He writes beautiful interesting worlds and fills them with cardboard. He's able to get 1-3 functional characters maximum but they are far outnumbered by the boring trash.
I enjoy ME2 and even ME3 more than 1 these days because ME1's squadmates (outside of notably Ashley and Wrex, the former being hated when she's by far the most interesting squaddie is hilarious) are codex entries with names and 3D models. Garrus' debut title is ME2 because ME1 he's boring and does nothing but introduce the concept of a 'Turian' and 'Citadel Security'.
KOTOR 1 has the same problem. Bastila is great and almost nothing else is. Jolee Bindo is unironically modern-AAA-writer-tier bad for most of his dialogue.

It really can’t be overstated how much the citadel DLC improved people’s opinion of the game. If you romanced Jack in 2 for instance, you would interact with her 3 times in the base game and that was it. She went from a romanceable squadmate to barely a side character. And every other squadmate that isn’t Liara, Garrus or Wrex aren’t much better.
