As an example: I think more need to go the way of the first Harvest Moon, where you have a very specific time limit until the game is over, and are given an ending based on your performance and what you did.

I strongly suspect OP's game is trying to go for a plot twist where horror elements or something totally unexpected get inserted into the game.
The twist is generally ruined by the steam tags. To use DDLC as an example, once you see "Psychological Horror" listed, you know what the game is. The twist would be most effective if you had no idea it was going to occur.
Unfortunately, if you don't blatantly advertise "the twist", then your game won't sell well. Why would someone by some random farming sim?
I am just speculating though. The game just gives me a feeling the developers are up to something.

Valheim is a pretty hardcore farmsim, can't plant so much as a carrot without tangling with trolls and you need to carefully manage your planting so as to not overcrowd your crops, can only grow certain things in every biome, need to grow enough for yourself and whatever livestock you have tamed and monitor your larder so you don't run out of seedstock
Animal Crossing is just doll house simulator for little bitches and homosexuals. It has absolutely nothing to do with farm sims. Hell, even calling AC a life sim is an insult to the genre.

You'd need occasional crop downturns, such that the prices are far below what you paid. and farmed goods are perishable, no long term storage allowed. sell it all at a loss.

The farmer in Stardew being almost the only person in the entire valley who has a profession that generates commerce and work was always such a silly point.
Hate or love stardew valley expanded, but atleast the valley makes 10x more sense even as a whimsical fantasy when there are other farmers.
