Was anime cringe holding back JRPGs all along?
Was anime cringe holding back JRPGs all along?
I think its more repeated "anime tropes" and stale archetypal 2 dimensional Japanese characters.
Exp 33 genuinely blindsides you multiple times through the story, like a breath of fresh air.
Bros
Yes. Definitely
Muh highschool kids defeat god with power of friendship
Why are slanteyes so hackneyed and unimaginative?
Square apes western designs withh ff16
it bombs
Nah, nobody cares about your tryhard adults.
The only reason this game got popular is because you can put a 16 year old french girl in a swimsuit and run around.
Nah it's repeated anime tropes and shit outdated gameplay that is holding them back.
FF16 does not look western lol
tryhard adults
Weebs are fascinatingly cringe
If it isn't clearly inspired from anime/manga/mecha, it's not a JRPG.
Stupid fucking retards.
I only know she's cute, but not legal.
Why do journalists hate anime?
I would like this game way more if retard now don’t spent all the time talking about how expedition 33 is top tier turn based combat when now even one mother fucker what write that shit has finish a shin megami tensie
spoiler
she is legal in France
They're upset Elden Ring embarrassed the entire western game industry, along with back to back western flops.
The problem with a lot of JRPGs isn't the anime artstyle, it's all the stale tropes people have been conditioned to believe comes along with it. And they would largely be correct
Elden Ring isn't anime and they've hated Japan for far, far longer than just 2022
Anime has the reputation of pervy "humor" and stupid childish dialog with spastic yelling characters. When a normie sees an anime character their minds instantly think of that and they disregard the game completely
The weirdest thing is when they act like having turn based combat is bizarre and new, as if Baldur's Gate 3 didn't sell a fucking billion copies just a few years ago.
Also all the grunts
Yes, one of my major issues with jap games is being forced to play as a faggot teenage twink self-insert. Expedition 33 let's me live out my middle aged fantasy
They spent a fuck ton of effort developing a distinct and unique power system with tons of rules, exceptions and mechanics. Tons of creative super powers but when the characters show up it's 1 in a dozen arctypes you have seen and heard over and over sgain
metaphor had other issues
like launching with no anti-aliasing and looking generally shitty
the visual difference between metaphor and 33 is couple console generations
Metaphor looked worse than persona 3 remake which came out months earlier kek
Metaphor look like ass and atlus deserved to be criticized for it when fucking smtvv and p3r look 100% better
The narratives being pushed by this average ass game are ridiculous
Why are you on Anon Babble if you hate Japanese people?
Watching abit of it game reminds me of FF8 abit. I think that appeals to alot of millenials.
No.
Source: Dragon Quest still outsold this like fucking crazy, as did the Squeenix remakes.
we don't get their hardcore/niche stuff, just media aimed at their preteens or teenagers who need those tropes or moral values since they're growing up.
It's like claiming that every all Hollywood movies are superhero films because marvel is popular. If you've read their Manga, film, or VNs it blows JRPG writing out of the water.
Exp 33 genuinely blindsides you multiple times through the story, like a breath of fresh air.
Which generic twists and expectation subversion. It suffers from the same problems as all modern western writing
They don't but weebs like to feel like they're being opposed for some reason.
No one is acting like turn based games are bizarre.
In the same way berserk isn't a manga?
I wouldn't want anti Japanese journalists glazing devs who are pro Japanese. Leave the frog weebs alone and stop using them to further poison the well with your shitty anit Japan rhetoric.
other JRPGs
THE LEAST A JRPG CAN DO IS BE JAPANESE AND IT'S NOT
IT'S AN RPG
STOP MAULING THESE TERMS YOU UNBELIEVABLE FUCKING NIGGERS
Kys btw
Source: Dragon Quest still outsold this like fucking crazy, as did the Squeenix remakes.
objectively not true
Tranime is the worst thing happened to gaming
Listening to Hirocuck or an incompetent mod ever
You're the problem.
Metaphor was fine, though 33 100% looks better imo. Personally I think Metaphor's big mistake visually was going with the out there human designs that, for the most part (all of Louis's stuff looks great), , don't really work and we never really get a proper reason why they look so weird anyways.
Storywise the only real issue is that you spend like the entire middle act of the game finding out about the truth of the world but then it ends up not mattering a ton (Louis easily could have just been any random kid who's place was burned down by the church. The only thing he gained from being a 'real human' is vague knowledge of how to make current humans).
Gameplay is fine. It's hard to do Press Turn wrong. The biggest issue is minor stuff like royal summoner not getting the devil summoner skills.
One thing I don't like about this game is it's being used as fuel by western media and retards to gaslight and psyop people into forgetting that the West has completely fumbled and are making shit games compared to Japan and other Asian countries. They know when you look at the rest of the year Japan is about to kill it with Elden Ring, Mario Kart, Death Stranding, Donkey Kong, Metal Gear Solid 3 remake. Monster Hunter World is the best selling video game of the year right now. They want to use this game to try to say that "No, the West is actually doing well at the moment!". It's really annoying.
Still owned by a Japanese guy and inspired by Japaneee imageboards.
Just fuck off to X, Sharty or trannyfarms if you hate Japanese stuff, kike.
what exactly makes you think this is a JRPG? it's not japanese and it's barely a RPG
Remake and Rebirth are absolutely ruined by the grunting. Cloud is particularly bad. He grunts more often then he talks.
One thing I don't like about this game is it's being used as fuel by western media and retards to gaslight and psyop people into forgetting that the West has completely fumbled and are making shit games compared to Japan and other Asian countries.
This is literally only a narrative on this shit website to try and make people mad. I haven't seen it anywhere else. In fact I've been seeing it used nonstop to shit ON other western companies for not doing as well.
yes, anime cringe is also holding back the incels in this thread from getting laid
People grunt all the time in real-time dummy, have you never had a job where you have to carry a bunch of shit?
its a shorthand to tell you its 4 niggers in a row fighting turn based enemies and you travel in an overlord
yeah it's this, JRPGs usually have retarded personalities so they can appeal to autists who can't pick up nuanced emotion
also characters that look like this don't help
Fuck off retard.
The characters aren't grunting merely from exertion. It's constant. No one is grunting nearly as often as they do in the 7 Remake.
I wonder if this board will have another meltdown if Sandfall attempts anime style for their upcoming game in the future.
persona 3 looks like shit
analyst says
study suggest
The director even recommended the new game by the Danganronpa studio and all the anti-Japan trannies on/v/ think he's on their side.
I think an RPG has to check a bunch of boxes but not all of them. Customizable main character. Control a party of characters. Turn based combat. Experience points and leveling up. Classes and skills. Equipment matters. Stats matter. Combat directly involves numbers. Freely explore a big world. Decisions can alter the outcome of the story.
A JRPG has to be made in Japan. JRPG is a pretty stupid term anyway, we don't have JPlatformers or JFPS.
all atlus games are stuck in the PS3 era graphically
It looks great actually.
would a 3rd nuke have made this worse or would it have fixed it?
east makes better western games
west makes better eastern games
We are so back
Threads like this full of retards who don't play JRPG's while making massive blanket statements about them are why JRPG's fail and why a four niggas in a row game with funny animations and no personality succeeded solely because it isn't anime. Niggers out here really don't have any shred of spine and can't like anything unless they're 100% sure that nobody will judge them for liking it.
praising isekai garbage made by weebs
A question to all the people in this thread:
If you hate, anime, Japan and weebs so much, why are you on this site and not, say, on facebook or twitter?
weebs and westaboos make the best games
if only the world building was a bit better...
Wailt till california toxic hair bitch flood in and make everything black & gay just like every europoor games
Lune SEXO!
No not my chinese cartoons :(
Sandfall is too based for that and will keep making kino.
The USA is very unpopular right now so hopefully they will not be allowed to meddle with European games anymore.
lol, just look at warhorse niggers
I just like good games
Answer the question
there is a sincere humility and a respect for rules and tropes in japanese media that prevent them from trying too hard and ending up with corny and inconsistent slop
humanity has long passed the need for subversive tropes is this a thread from 2003 ?
Anime JRPGs are all generic, and Trails is the most generic one of all. Last year I got the notion in my retarded brain to marathon that franchise. I got through to the first few hours of Reverie. Sky and the Crossbell games were fun though cliche in some areas but good lord Cold Steel went balls deep and killed it all
Even when JRPGs tries to avoid or tone down the "anime cringe" or be more realistic most still don't get that popular. I think people were praising Metaphor for having less cringe compared to Persona (and it will never outsell P5). Even western made rpgs inspired by them usually don't get this kind of success. Photorealistic aesthetics is also more marketable, some people will just never play something with an anime style no matter the writing.
I don't see this game having the staying power of some of the famous ones honestly and Persona 6 will probably sell faster than most of them too. People play JRPGs because they're Japanese. They're not being held back because of that, that's what jrpgs fans expect and want and it's simply not going to appeal to a lot of people.
there is a sincere humility and a respect for rules and tropes in japanese media that prevent them from trying too hard and ending up with corny and inconsistent slop
Little bro really said that the japs are immune to bad writing cause muh honor lmao
All RPGS are generic. They're only ever written by fanasy novel washouts who think "I know, we'll make a videogame that's just about people talking all the fucking time! gameplay? idk just press the attack button on them or whatever... I have writing to do!"
I read the article and at no point did it talk about "cringy anime moments/tropes" and even goes as far as to say the game pays respect to OG 90's/00's jarpigs
Methinks this is vee just being ragebaiting retards again
want to get a feeling of japanese media so start looking up popular Light Novels
queue 9,000,000,235,436,001 variations of 'That Time I Died And Was Reincarnated As A Tax Accountant In Another World (But My Basic Ability Is Actually Overpowered?)
yeah nah slants are unimaginative
Try just pressing A in something like Etrian Odyssey and see how far that gets you.
If anything, it's a win for JRPGs and just goes to show how out of touch Square Enix is.
The frogs who made E33 love JRPGs and have a deep respect for Japanese games in general.
That's a fake edit, btw. Hiroyuki never said that.
Go back.

On PC
Japs who mostly consume JRPGs are in Japan and they play on PS5 and Switch still
It's more like "an ancient evil awakens and you have to defeat it since you're the chosen one. You have some generic safe party members who only serve you or die." Also one of them is an unkillable self insert or writer's pet and choices are an illusion.
Not him and I don't with the other guy but how do you get good in Etrain Odyssey anyways? Always felt like I was missing something since every fight was a huge slog and my guys died super amazingly quick.
Tranime is just embarrassing. It's no surprise non-tranime sells, while tranime doesn't.
It depends on the level of anime cringe. A little bit of it can be heatlhy, but Japs almost invariably go overboard with their schoolgirl pedo-like obsessions, or in Square's specific instance of having almost only the most faggiest twinks as main characters.
It's also on PS5. I even saw a Japanese streamer playing it earlier today.
characters acting like real people in MY jrpg???
where's the little girl (part of the special forces) who uses the biggest/strongest weapons btw?
if most incels in this thread stopped watching anime they would have sex
She's right there, lil bro
She's there and actually uses a teeny-weeny rapier (still does literally 1,000x the damage of the other characters)
"it can't be helped"
"if i kill him i will be just like him"
"darkness"
"let's kill God"
can't date and fuck mature women
It got tiresome a very long time ago.
The article OP posted is about how it's outselling games on PC. Not PS5.
I really wish the success of 33 actually communicates to publishers you dont need to force in wacky character creation with body type AB and pronouns
People are fine playing as a preset characters. They prefer it even.
WHAT THE FUCK IS THE LAST BLUE MAGE SKILL
God, Lune is so relentlessly beautiful.
can't date and fuck mature women
Let's kill God
E33 is that but mixing in FFTA's plot
can't date and fuck mature women
you can do that in fucking persona
I said little girl. Maelle is the same age as most MCs in jrpgs.
do you even play jrpgs????
You played P5 once and imagined 20 other JRPGs being just like them.
Yes definitively. it holds back games in general.
youtube.com
Nice stealth GCJ raid thread
Anime stuff is still doing better than your manjaw fggot westslop, and your neovaginas will still smell like rotting skunk
Are there any good weeaboo games besides this?
I like Gustavs hummh's though.
can't date and fuck mature women
This already happens in Persona and you all never shut the fuck up about how gross and icky it is.
You will burn in the Revolution, chuddie.
Epic Battle Fantasy
the subversive "reality break" trope is actually a trashy overused one.
that removes all stakes and square has used way too many times.
sadly this game shits the bed in the same way.
I was ambivalent towards this game but now it's out and is just being used as an excuse to use Japan as a punching bag. Now i resent this game deeply and will never play it. Thanks, fags.
im pretty sure this is one of the enemies renoir creates during act 3 but im not 100% sure
people really pretending anime isn't super popular again.
It was doing the heavy lifting yeah
yfw you learn why Sciel is the way she is at the end of her camp dialogue which gives context to the Sirène vision
Don't forget alcohol is a no no
but how do you get good in Etrain Odyssey anyways?
Just explore as far an thoroughly as you can. Don't be afraid to grind a little, though you shouldn't need to except for maybe super bosses, and invest in status effects, they're actually useful. What game are you struggling with?
I don't get this turn basedfag oppression olympics when they have Pokemon, Persona, SMT, Metaphor etc... I think Rebirth's combat was fine and refreshing even if it's a little jank.
It can be both more popular than ever and at the same time have many people avoid anime because of the tropes that plague them
Watching abit of it game reminds me of FF8 abit
Say it isn't so
obsessed
You fell for the psyop again
um, sweety, this one jrpg out of 3456 does this so your argument is wrong
Being a pedantic cunt is not a substitute for a personality.
it's more a message for them to get their shit together and make better games instead of being stuck in the ps3 era and using the same template for all their characters.
I wonder what Kojima would do if he was forced to make a fantasy jrpg...
Tales of the Abyss is still peak when it comes to JRPG worldbuilding. That game has three different libraries where you can spend half an hour just reading books about the setting's factions, days of the week, fucking census for the different cities in the planet and other stuff. It's a very cohesive whole you barely see to this degree in other Tales nevermind JRPGs at large.
DMC
Kingdom hearts 2
they sure didn't live up to the level of polish and animation quality of those games.
Chinks and Gooks have long surpassed Japs in their own gacha business
Has Japan actually stepped up? No they haven't
They will not probably cannot change
Oh cool thanks, haven't gone to Lumiere final dungeon yet, I guess I can chill and bench Monaco for a while
there's literally nothing about this game that I haven't seen in a JRPG before, if anything it exposes how many people never gives them a chance based on stupid prejudice like they're showing now.
Nothing has changed.
JRPG > WRPG
None of that worldbuilding matters when you immediately hate Luke for sounding like a rejected boy band wannabe who whines like a bitchy girl. People suffered through that shit back in the day because there weren't really any other alternatives. Thank GOD the times are changing. If the Japanese never make another JRPG again, the gaming world will be better for it.
t. Asch
I don’t hate any of those things but this question doesn’t make sense. I would still like Anon Babble even if I did hate those things.
Trails of Cold Steel, Couple of Tales of games, Dragon's Dogma 2, Rune Factory games.
Not my problem you're a cum burping retarded cunt.
Metaphor was a mid game pretending to be kino. When a real banger shows up, ofc it's going to mog that game. Another thing that holds back anime games is the voice acting. For some reason anime/anime game voice actors tend to dial that shit in. You won't get a Clive/Daredevil performance in an anime game.
removes the J from JRPG.
still calls it a JRPG
Can someone please explain?
This, plus Lune's extremely hot.
No because E33 is not an JRPG
Same distinction between Shmup and "Euroshmup". They embody design philosophies and not geographic locations/creator nationalities. A Japanese dev team could make a WRPG if they wanted. Westerners can make JRPGs if they want.
CLAIR OBSCUR ISNT A JRPG
CLAIR OBSCUR ISNT A JRPG
CLAIR OBSCUR ISNT A JRPG
CLAIR OBSCUR ISNT A JRPG
CLAIR OBSCUR ISNT A JRPG
IT WASNT MADE IN FUCKING JAPAN ITS A TURN BASED RPG
is the concept of a game genre really that confusing
these are the kinda people I really didnt miss when Anon Babble was down, holy shit
It's the name of a genre. Just like Dark Souls is a WRPG, or Blasphemous is a Metroidvania even though it wasn't made by the country responsible for either Metroid or Castlevania
just fucking use mocap and hire real actors (not japs) for all the cutscenes.
that's it I fixed jrpgs
Just because you miss use the term doesnt make it truth. ITS JAPANESE ROLE PLAYING GAME. The game was made by french thus not a JRPG.
I do not believe that it is possible for someone to be this insufferable.
I think I’ve figured it our. You actually hate Expedition 33 so you’re trying to act as insufferable as possible so that people hate Expedition 33 for having an obnoxious fanbase.
You’re doing a pretty good job.
What defines a JRPG for you then? and its not a matter of genre the problem is the infinite amount of sub-genres that keep making things even harder to define
The animation teams in those games are like 5-10x bigger.
westerners will step up to the plate and release a huge wave of good JRPGs to seal the deal
it won't happen because 99% of western devs are narcissistic cunts like you who dismiss japanese games completely
the reason E33 is good is because those devs appreciate japanese media in the first place
that's why every other day we hear news of western gaming companies having lay offs
3/10
Dark Souls is a soulslike not either western nor RPG.
Having cutscenes that don't feel the need to overplay emotions for stunted autists to get the meaning of things certainly helps. Back in the SNES and PS1 days you had characters go "..." to signify they knew more than they let on. Nowadays you can do so much more with a simple look or a frown, but most JRPGs insist in still doing the bare minimum or worse, . There's zero doubt in my mind that if E33 was the same game with the same characters and the same premise but made by a Japanese team in Japan, it'd have far less subtletly in its narrative.
Dark Souls is a soulslike
You can say that now, when such a genre has been established. What would you have called it back in... 2012, 2013?
Hell, nevermind that. Would you call Dragon's Dogma a JRPG?
action game with rpg elements?
No japanese developers
No japanese voice actors
No anime/manga/japanese art-style or stylization
No japanese tropes/characters/characterizations
No japanese story/themes
No japanese anything
Seriously what is the "J" in this "JRPG"?
Don't care.
as an animator if you start an animation you should finish and refine it. fixing all the mistakes before moving on.
If someone told me they call it a WRPG, I wouldn't say they were wrong
JBased faggot
Japanese are actually seriously cringe uncool people.
Yuck. Realistic graphics + modern phenotypes will never be a good combination no matter how much retards pretend otherwise.
“At Sandfall Interactive we all have a love for JRPGs like Final Fantasy, the Tales series, Lost Odyssey, and Persona with its awesome UI, rhythm, and dynamic camera. We all have a lot of nostalgia and love for these kinds of games…”
Kinda makes you wonder then, why people are going with this narrative that it sets the new standards for >J RPGs, when the current standards inspired this game more than anything.
Unfortunately they totally derailed the world building for the Trails game. I'd say it falls apart with Cold Steel or at least a bit into it. The concept, the tone, the resolution of plots, villain motivations, etc. It has never recovered.
Amazingly enough, around the same time, the music went down in average quality and the combat became a joke with a dozen of game breaking strategies. I can only guess a bunch of people at Falcom retired or died or something.
Its not that its anime, its the fact that the only JRPGs that still exist is juvenile anime shit like Trails and Ys. Metaphor was the closest thing to that and it did really well critically and commercially.
im drunk i meant to say Metaphor was closest to mature anime like Berserk
yes, unironically
I don't care about "Relistic" as an artstyle.
but the grainy, smeared, pixelated unreal engine visuals are just low quality vomit without any semblance of clarity.
France > Japan
Europeans > Asians
Is that how it goes... ?
Because if you read each devs' favorite game, you realize they're talking about old FF and Tales games, not "the current" ones. FFVIII, Symphonia, the like.
Hate of Western ideals in conflict with their idea of conquest, which unironically is rape and sex. That and losing the War with two nukes thrown in for good measure.
Ubishit alone tanks France's reputation for me but E33 was decent but not enough to think like this.
metaphor
berserk
mature
you are not just drunk you are also retarded
desu, it might as well be true.
The great era of euro gaming is here.
Enough with jap shit.
all this seething about muh anime and muh sexualization and muh juvenile tropes
yup, it's a raid thread. probably those niggers from poly-gone
sales = quality
Gacha are all JRPG in essence
The #1 gacha last month is literally inspired by Trail series
inb4 all the "it doesnt count" cope
This, it's so obvious, probably with some sametroon
people arent just starved for a decent classic style rpg, but just a fucking good game at all these days.
Sped 33 is not a JRPG. Also it did not outsell Metaphor 2:1. Metaphor made 1M in 1 day. Sped 33 took 3 days.
people seething at anime, their fans, and the Japanese and they will use any and every opportunity to ragebait and shit on them. Like always.
on PC
the platform that never got any jrpg made for it, only ports and emulation.
Everyone is raving about this 33 game but something about it enrages me. The monster design, the atmosphere, the combat looks like a hot mess... snappy yet unassuming characters.
There's something about it that's lint in my belly button. I don't like it.
That's retarded. Anime, manga, and gacha are huge.
The thing that's holding Japanese anime games back is that as they entered the 7th generation of consoles, the Japanese got it in their heads that anime games are niche and anything that's ambitious needs to veer away from anime, especially otaku-style (again, huge; multiple multi-billion dollar franchises). It was pure self-sabotage. If they got people used to high quality retail anime games on Steam that don't have the timed exclusivity idiocy, Japan would be beating these numbers routinely.
if we bring in gacha, then genshin impact alone already demolishes OP's retarded question
I know an astroturfed game when I see one.
I don't get how this is a JRPG
This thread is pure reddit.
gee, YOUTHINKS?
It's hard to grasp WRPGs being able to stack up before Witcher 3. Souls is an actual game the way Japanese games are actual video games, separate from move 3 seconds and stop sims or bethes
This. Read the room, tards. The casual audience wants a turn based RPG with western sensibilities pre-culture war shit. That's why they consider the game a JRPG despite being made by frogs.
If they got rid of the ugly UE5 realism style then I would consider playing this, but I skipped it because I don't play to see pores and poorly rendered detailed hair on my screen.
anon said the current standards not the current games.
Why would Demon's Souls be a "WRPG" in the first place? It's main influence was 3D Zelda and Monster Hunter (action games, at minimum), which was being applied to the game structure established by earlier FROM titles. If you were going to call it anything incorrectly, at least call it a Dungeon Crawler or something.
t. I cant afford a nice pc right now and heres my cope about being unable to run ue5 titles
wanting to play this epileptic eye sore of a game
ok shill
Name 1 western rpg with better writing than Boku no Pico. Just 1.
what gpu do you own
I got 3080 I bought in 2021 and soon I'ma buy 33 and literally play it
Thats not a JRPG. Its a Western RPG taking inspiration from JRPGs but it is not a JRPG. These journos should be lynched.
anyone could ask you the same question. every normalfaggot, woman, and zoomer under the age of twenty watches anime and reads manga now. why are you on a niche website when your ilk live on reddit?
no
Video games is literally the most popular normalfaggot hobby nowadays. Why are you here?
If this is a Western RPG then nu Dooms are too because they have a perk builds.
false
And everyone who were alive before you read manga and watched anime as a child too, kid.
Hating one while loving the others isn't mutually exclusive.
It's mostly the fact western normalfags like realistic graphics. If you made the exact same game with an anime aesthetic it wouldn't sell as much. That's really it.
Funny how no one can give an example for .
Can also find the same mob in Renoir's Drafts.
I think all this has done is allow western devs/journalists to once again allow their anti-Japan biases to mainstream again. You faggots wanted to go back to the 360 G4 era after all.
Yes, unironically
anime aesthetics make everything worse and cringe, i don't want to identify with some losers
characters look like human, talk like humans, act like humans, not some cringe faggy twinks with voice actors that sound like if a nigger raped them without a lube
i tried getting into aninus many times and this shit is just beyond cringe. weebs deserve to get gassed
because facebook and twitter have even more of those things.
And what do you hate? Weebs?
QTEs and real time reaction defense ruins the game
Imagine getting filtered by fucking Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga of all fucking things.
Anon said "the current standards inspired this game" using as argument games from 25 years ago because he didn't realize the devs talked about the FFs of old, not the current ones
Why do nerds want to relive high school with god powers, love interests, friends and an attainable goal
You wouldn't get it...
Nu Doom is primarily a shooter with RPG elements. Saying its an RPG is like Borderlands is an RPG because it has builds
Sandfall Interactive are massive weebs and love anime. Idk why chinks and sharty troons are taking weird angles from this and agreeing with journalists.
"taking inspiration" meaning "it is based on the same mechanics and concepts as JRPGs".
A genre is a category of games which share mechanics and concepts and are most similar to each other than any other kind of game.
E33 is most similar to the games of the genre it aimed to be a part of.
It does not take much, if any, "inspiration" from "Western RPGs".
In other words, it is a JRPG.
This current generation of JRPGs are really bad, but I think Japanese people are starting to figure it out.
It doesnt matter what they play or take inspiration from, their success is a tool for journos to push their anti jap sentiment after having their shit kicked in for the past 5 years.
Its bad because they keep adhering to what westroons want. They removed fanservice in 90% of them
I hope they take the right lessons from it like the writing and gameplay instead of falling for the realism crap some more.
you're crazy if you think persona 5 didn't have some hand in this. also, didn't they just recommend kodaka's newest game which looks weeb as shit?
Haha, your optimism is funny.
JRPG is a an RPG that is
1.) Made by Jap Devs
2.) Primarily made with Jap audiences in mind
Forspoken? Not a JRPG. FFXVI? Not a JRPG not only because its a DMC clone masquerading as one but because the devs said they made it with western audiences in mind.
Trails? JRPG. Ys? JRPG. SMTVV? JRPG
Expedition 33? Not a JRPG
Saying Expedition 33 is a JRPG is.like saying Netflix Castlevania and DMC are anime.
You never know. For example, Square will keep pushing action rpg and realism instead of keeping their asthetic and going back to turn based rpg. Enix maybe.
So nip children are all living in an rpg since they were made by 2 jap devs?
just put the phone in front of your face Takahashi.
why can't they do it? looks very simple to me.
I actually liked Rebirth's combat system more than any action rpg of the past 10 years. I just have a problem with the writing.
Why won't journos talk about how E33 has zero political dialogue in it? Like there is no usual typical cliché bullshit about muh racism, muh misoginy, muh homophobia and all that shit. It's just a nice story in an interesting setting. Maybe that's what people wanted all along?
Its not noteworthy in any way
Nevermind then, thought you wanted the latter back but now I get what you mean.
It’s funny cause if they turned their isekai LN slop into JRPGs(not the shitty safe classic shit but degenerate isekai shit) they would be swimming in cash.
They don't want to spin agendas against their own team. They see asian devs as a bigger threat.
game made by French
tales place in not!France
no "down with the bourgeoisie" line
Hope mods are scrolling these threads and purging all the anime-hating tourists
You see son this sushi roll isn't Japanese food because it wasn't actually made in Japan
Japanese-style Role Playing Game.
After beating E33 (and enjoying it) I moved to Hundred Line (which is also great) and it didn't feel like I was playing something inferior because it was anime and had anime tropes. I don't know why people are so sensitive about these things.
expedition 33
reasonably priced
sells well
metaphor
japanese publisher
horribly priced
doesn't sell as well
this is the trend
The push for realism has been delayed thanks to the low budget AAs prioritizing other things but I fear the cancer is still going to grow tenfold.
And just to add, it’s obviously some kind of agenda that they haven’t been doing that because the LN industry is booming and would benefit a lot if they turned them into games especially those with video game stats and everything instead of turning them into cheap gachas they should make serious rpgs.
Lol. The mods don't delete actual rule-breaking stuff. Why would they care about this?
One can only hope. Quick and dirty way to improve the website
The California Roll will never be Japanese no matter how hard its marketed as one, the same way Fortune Cookies arent Chinese
Anyways for those who finished the game or watched it : What's the best ending?
"RPG" is a borderline meaningless term when you take it out of its context. Sometimes it even means two totally opposed concepts (in role-playing game terms), like crunching stats in a strategic fashion or choosing dialogue options to affect story outcomes. This is your first mistake.
It's not even worth seriously considering your second one, where you accidentally call Puyo Puyo, Snatcher, and Touhou JRPGs - at the same time - because 1) made by Japs, 2) beloved by Japs (including several Jap only releases). Was Resident Evil 1 a JRPG, but then the series stop being a JRPG by the time 2 and 3 rolled around and it was a huge success in the west? I don't know.
I think you were lobotomized to say something this retarded, if not, you should be lobotomized.
Anime is not even a genre and entirely besides the point. JRPG is a genre because it is a group of games which are most like each other. E33 went out of its way to be apart of this genre. E33 is more like JRPGs than any other kind of game. It is UN-like any kind of a "WRPG", unless you include Wizardry, but even then, that's only because JRPGs are like Wizardry.
doesnt sell well
It did 1M in its first day. This is just westard journo cope expected from a site called (((gameindustry.biz)))
lets include how much it cost to make.
proportionally 1M is most likely not enough
California Roll is still sushi.
One of the most famous types of sushi/sashimi is Salmon. Salmon was not used by the Japanese until the 1980s, when it was introduced by the west. Google it.
Salmon Sushi is also Sushi. Salmon Sushi is still considered Japanese style. It not considered western.
Hopefully flipping your silly example back on its head serves as some kind of revelation for you and you are able to under the concept of "Japanese-style".
If one of the girls is not screaming "Kyaaaaa!" then it's not an authentic jrpg.
Thats retarded.
JRPG is a genre because it is a group of games which are most like each other
I didnt know Brave Fencer Musashi played like Final Fantasy which played like Vagrant Story which played like Ast Libra. No, words mean something, these games arent JRPG because they play similarly, these ganes are JRPG because they were made by Japs primarily for Japs.
Was Resident Evil 1 a JRPG, but then the series stop being a JRPG by the time 2 and 3 rolled around and it was a huge success in the west? I don't know.
No, its a survival horror game. Its clear and concise and doesnt need to be clarified unlike JRPG which has been misused for as people can remember.
Meanwhile the director of the game
This is especially funny considering how hated 15 is here and how it was criticized being full of "anime bullshit" by journos and anime haters.
The vast majority of this game's sales like over 75% were on PC according to that "analyst data" which is something you can expect to hear brought up dozens of times after the FOTM period for this end
Seeing as Sega is so proud of it, Id say it sold pretty well
No, it's the bullshit focus on high school.
oops, wrong screenshot.
Literally play any other title other then Persona I beg you
They literally nuked an anti-japanese thread from an e33 shill the other day
Persona is very popular
Plenty of anime and manga with high schoolers are also extremely popular
High school is a popular setting in general.
Yes, but unironically. Not the aesthetics, but the insistence of japs to shove predictable and unfun tropes in their writing
Good. But just nuking the thread isn't enough, gotta hand out a few bans first.
Nothing against the game myself, but fuck the westoid narrative when the devs are openly weebs and JRPG enjoyers.
Brave Fencer Musashi
Action Game / Action RPG, pretty clear cut case
Vagrant Story
Dungeon Crawler, almost in the most classic sense, understandably confusing because it's a very experimental game.
Ast Libra
Was not familiar with this game, but it seems to be a very straightforward 2D action game.
Final Fantasy is very clearly a JRPG though (MMO and action exceptions aside). Comparing the list of examples (maybe excluding Vagrant Story), these games are nothing like Final Fantasy, whereas Final Fantasy is totally at home next to Dragon Quest, SMT, etc.
Since you seem to be obsessed with this flimsy concept of 'intended for japanese audiences', you should probably consider the intent behind making these games within this very common mold and not just jumping straight to action RPGs (or top-down WRPGs) by the time of the SNES. Almost as if they were intending these games to be apart of this genre, much like E33 is.
That image alone is stale characterization that has been copy pasted to death in western fiction. The bias is unreal here, how are there so many fags on Anon Babble that love this netflix slop?
Most of them are chinks
The ""gothic"" fem fatale is overrated and I see it in every western media piece. Idk why Anon Babbleirgins keep parading it as the next new big thing when it's generic as hell and old. Most western devs put black hair on their white women because they can't texture light colored hairs for shit.
kino... so fvcking... kino
this, ffxvi tried to be serious but it the end, it's japshit.
sorry big bro i know you want me to go home but mom said i could keep playing this vidyacanvas longer if i wanted
What in the kino's name? By Vaush, this looks amazing!
Brave Fencer Musashi
JRPG, under the category of Action RPG
Vagrant Story
JRPG, under the category of dungeon crawler
Ast Libra
JRPG under the category of dungeon crawler with roguelike enemies
Final Fantasy
Turn Based Japanese RPG
When Falcom made Dragon Slayer and Ys back in the 80s, they were trying to capture traditonal tabletop roleplaying games like D&D and make it more palateable for the Japanese audience, the same way Western developers did with Ultima and Wizardry. Its by no way a flimsy definition, if it was then western devs wouldve made something similar to Falcom's attempt at porting the roleplaying genre into videogame form way before trying to cash out during the FF7 craze in the 5th generation. They didnt because western devs had a totally different interpetation of what the genre should be like for the western audience
NOOOO, MUH HONOROBU JAPAN-SAMA!
I played Valkyrie Chronicles or whatever it's called, years ago and I hated the characters, the art style and the cringeworthy anime dialogue and the gameplay. I haven't touched a jarpig since.
Bought 33 on a whim because it's a turn based game without anime and no gay shit like bg3.
Turns out I was right. 33 is a great game and I hated anime all along as it's terrible slop for children and neckbeards.
Ok, but what's Asmongold's opinion on this situation?
"oh boy, Metaphor is finally on sale"
55$
yeah, no.
You are a FAGGOT!
Anon Babble hasn’t been weeaboo obsessed since the tourist invasion. It doesn’t hep anime is mainstream now. Knowing Anon Babble hates mainstream.
You can just drop "JRPG" and call them... Japanese Games.
Japanese Game, under the category of Action RPG
Japanese Game, under the category of fighting game
Japanese Game, under the category of 2D platformer
I mean, yes, these games barely play alike, if at all, but it's very important we call them Japanese Games.
What you are saying has almost nothing to do with the game or genre itself, it is just very important to you that people don't forget it came from Japan.
E33 is a JRPG (Japanese-Style) because that's the term people use for Dragon Quest-likes and their varied evolutions, like including QTEs and action inputs.
Jackie chan
holy shit maelle's ending is so evil she strings the last vestiges of her bro's soul and strings him up like a marionette to play piano for him in some sinister make-believe fairytale
time to reload and redo
lmao get shat on weebniggers your games will NEVER EVER be remotely as popular, critically acclaimed or accepted by the mainstream and like the dumb faggot you are that actually makes you mad.
Your parents are gonna be more disappointed in you playing a Trails game than they are you not giving them a grandson.
reminder that forced parrysloppa is not JRPG
The only recent game out of that list is probably persona 5, which honestly is a bit of an outlier when it comes to modern JRPGs. It didn't feel like cheap low budget trash, as opposed to modern Trails games, which are repulsive. They are not talking about FF15/FF16/7R, which are so far removed from their roots and is now a mess of a franchise. All people wanted is a FF game with modern graphics, but still retaining the turn based combat, and a good story. We finally got that.
Classic turn based is fucking trash. Yeah just sit their and eat shit from the enemies.
The reactive gameplay is what makes it engaging and fun.
seeLiterally influenced by FF15.
sold more than this woke slop lol
only one million units sold
It bombed.
I wonder how much Tabata paid, besides FFXV was still Nomura's
It plays almost nothing like it. The only similarities are in aesthetics.
metaphor is way more thought provoking than this WEG looking ass game
This game is just a way for westoid journos and youtubers to back to G4 era anti-Jap sentiment. No it doesnt matter if the devs played JRPGs or if they based it off tropes and cliches from JRPGs, it will be used as a weapon against Japs because they still cant get over Persona 5, Nier Automata and Elden Ring.
I actually would argue that yes. Metaphor has deeper themes... The problem is that metaphor is so hamfisted with them and treats it's audience like children
Yes, I pointed this out when Persona 5 couldn't win a single GOTY award. Every fucking game until and including that, Atlus couldn't stop putting in idiot characters and puerile situations, and voice acting that couldn't rate higher than a saturday-morning cartoon. People don't understand how much of a creative gamble Metaphor actually was, trying to be 'serious' and all. Glad it paid off.
Elden Ring doesn't feel like a Japanese game, and nor do any of souls games before it. Also not a JRPG. Neither is Nier.
and treats it's audience like children
so the eternal problem of jrpg
The only FF XV I see in E33 is some of the aesthetics, and then more Kingsglaive than FF XV proper, and the inane choice to make jumping puzzles in a game with an engine absolutely not suited for them.
Dont forget how inflammed those people got with the whole Zanzibart thing or the whole "Japs make bad UX" debacle, or "Elden Ring should have an easy mode" discourse.
The zanzibart thing is more about the game having a non-existent story with schizophrenic dialog. Nobody played those games for that reason.
When people here keep saying that Metaphor is woke due to out of context screenshots, while journos say they liked it due to the shallow election timing of its release, I really cant blame Atlus for trying to make some thrmes hamfisted
And yet those same people used it against Elden Ring and Jap devs. You see where this is going? Those guys keep throwing potshots at successful Japanese games, get humbled thrn suddenly have the balls to do it again when something like BG3 or E33 comes up
Why is Anon Babble claiming that anime is mainstream while at the same time shilling this game by saying its successful because normal people can't stand weeb shit?
I think Elden Ring deserved all that criticism as a soulsfag. Most other Jap games get flak for unrelated issues about the games like politics.
Anime as a whole is not mainstream, only shounen shit is. Its popular among niggers and spics and post covid tourists. Suggest slice of life or romcom to them and they would implode if they dont call you diddy blud first. Fuck, even something like SpyxFamily would make these people reel.
Western trannies should stick to boring shit like Clair Obscur, us chads will be playing J kino with it's beloved tropes
Anime is popular because western tv is ugly and depressing as fuck
I pointed this out when Persona 5 couldn't win a single GOTY award
First, who gives a fuck, Metaphor will never outsell P5. Secondly, it was still nominated over the majority of games that didn't have those things, third, Metaphor is just riding Persona 5's coattails, and fourth, journos was deepthroating the game because of its politics which led to more awards. Metaphor will be forgotten while Persona 5, 4, and 3 won't be.
Good thing he wasn't talking about gameplay.
Point is, it isn't just classic JRPGs he's pulling in influence from like some people here are trying to believe.
You say this as if Persona 3 4 and 5 werent deepthroated to hell and back. P5 especially is known as a JRPG for people who hate JRPGs on top of other JRPGs being compared to Persona every single time by those hacks.
what's with all these fucking retards calling it a Japanese roll playing game? how do they still have a job? the game has nothing to do with Japan
Genuinely, the only difference between this game and japanese role playing games is that this respects my intelligence.
So many JRPGs have genuinely interesting shit going on, only for them to completely ruin it by being written like a shonen anime aimed at young teens.
Haven't felt like this since the NieR games, though it does also lead to the issue of absolute smooth-brain takes by the people who need to be spoonfed the story. I've seen people genuinely claim that Automata is advocates for communism. Shit like that makes me wonder if that's the reason why so many JRPGs don't trust their players to understand the story.
The term JRPG is a misnomer but it does refer to a specific thing: both WRPGs and JRPGs evolved from dungeons and dragons type gameplay, but WRPGs went big into the choose your own adventure part of it and JRPGs stayed with the spreadsheets of information part of it mostly.
It's why Souls games aren't called JRPGs despite being RPGs made in Japan, but E33 is called that despite being made in France
I think translators are a major problem. they're all retarded
its disingenuous to compare, this is "FRPG" not "JRPG", japan never really had a chance
Mario is a Jplatformer
JRPGs have to make it clear else you'll get the Media Literacy crowd on your ass for trying to interpret it in the most logical way possible. Besrly 15+ years later and you still have people saying Naoto is trans, so no I welcome JRPGs trying to reiterate itself if you have an audience as dumb as these.
explain ff16 flopping
who would've guess that a different art style would be a novelty and drive interest
nope, the anime style is why I played those games in the first place
it's a gay action game
True, but they're still just anime games at the end of the day. About high schoolers to boot. Best thing they can ever do is for those people is get nominations and win other categories. Metaphor was an anime game with toned down "cringe" and politics I agree with bonus.
Shit pacing and writing since story is the focus.
I like 16 but
Mainline game in an RPG series that isn't an RPG
Western influences when native influences always work best (Dark Souls is western inspired but still very japanese in its philosophy)
Horribly mismanaged marketing (timed console exclusivity)
Final Fantasy's brand is kind of dead outside of the MMO after the horrible reception of 13, 15 and 14's 1.0 launch
It should have been a spinoff or a new IP entirely that borrowed FF enemies.
Metaphor's politics is far from ehat joutnos eanted though. Its probably the si glemost misunderstood game recently because people here keep saying its woke and journos keep praising it when the entire message and theme of the game was saying utopias are unrealistic and anyone who says otherwise is trying to push their politics on you. Its the game that says freebies and gibs are bad and that socialism is for idiots
So many JRPGs have genuinely interesting shit going on, only for them to completely ruin it by being written like a shonen anime aimed at young teens.
Guess what the main demographic is.
The final redpill is that japs all look the same so they can't be portrayed in anything but anime
Yes, tranime shit should be relegated exclusively to gachashit for mentally ill troons, seagroids and pajeets.
It's literally impossible to tranime have a good story and writing.
Wrong
Guess what the main demographic is.
That was the main demographic. In the 90's, when we were kids. But kids grow up, and the current kids don't play turn-based games, they play Fornite.
It's not though. JRPG isn't defined by its target audience like shonen inherently is. It just stands for Japanese Role Playing Game.
And a lot of JRPGs want to be mature, but either target the wrong audience for the story they want to tell or fail to write in a way that would be compelling to their target audience.
Just stop playing Trails of series. You're making yourself miserable and no the two animes that you saw as a teen aren't the same as the millions of them out there.
Nta ill predict what he'll say: "Trails became shit after Sky."
as much as I enjoy JRPGs this gets boring indeed
he doesn't manage to trigger first turn practically every time
Skill issue
The bias is unreal here
Try everywhere, contrarian-kun.
If anything that was the only reason I ever considered playing one.
Otherwise it's better to just play a cRPG instead
it's an american website, made popular by americans, most content created by americans, where you're forced to speak american and the server is based in the only place that wouldn't get it shut down for hate speech. can you guess where, shitskin? and Anon Babble hasn't resembled 2chan in 17 years
Bloated ass budget meant it had to sell tens of millions to break even
in fact Anon Babble's golden age was before the yurofaggot and spic invasion of 2012 for a reason
The one thing WRPGs don't do is make attractive characters, clair obscur seeks to fix that.
The only reason you American fucks aren't the worst aspect of the site is because Indians and Australians exist. Go back to fucking your vegetative mother.
kill yourself, newfag. you're the cancer
It's not even Japanese, it's French
you'll always be an unfunny miserable yurofaggot that makes every place worse wherever you go
Japancucks will see shit like this about how much amerimutts hate them yet they will continue to worship them btw
It's pretty obvious the OST has some NieR inspiration, but the world map theme is the most NieR shit I've heard since... well, NieR.
How the fuck did this soundcloud artist manage to match Okabe?
Clair Obscure literally has FFXIII's plot
Gustave = Lightning
Sophie = Serah
Maelle = Vanille
Lumiere = Cocoon
The Continent = Gran Pulse
Gommage = Brands/C'ieth
Expeditioners = L'Cie
Paintress = Orphan
Notice how people shit over JRPGs and then the moment some creatively bankrupt western dev steals the same ideas and gives it a new coat of paint they trip over themselves to crown it the best game ever?
I didn't say it was defined by it, just most JRPGS have teenagers are their target audience and that is one of the reasons why their protags skew young and written like a shounen anime.
devs loves Japanese RPGs, action games, tropes, anime that they implemented those elements in their music, game design, writing etc...
Retards: OMG THIS IS SO OVER FOR JAPAN. NOBODY WANTS YOUR TRANIME SLOP ANYMORE. THE JAPANESE VIDEO GAME INDUSTRY IS COLLAPSING. WHAT SHOULD X JAPANESE COMPANY LEARN FROM THIS?
If anything it just proves that Japanese inspired stuff mogs the shit out of Western games and media.
Of all the FF's, the one you think of is XIII?
Really?
i mean you're right, but jap devs should learn to not reject their own creatives in favor of whatever is trending in the west
sakurai said recently that japanese developers should make japanese games instead of americanized games, and E33's success is proof that he is right
Was anime cringe holding back JRPGs all along?
was JRPG holding JRPG back all along?
kys journo faggot
manage to match Okabe
Clair Obscur fans need to just shut the fuck up
Only 1 week after release and this game's fanbase managed to be more fucking obnoxious than Persona's
you're crazy if you dont think this game is cringe it even has the strong woman angry scream crying thing
Good point yeah. Realistic graphics makes the game feel more serious and grown up.
Anon Babble has been overrun by Anon Babbleskins who hate anime because it's not "le heckin based trad" that also believe themselves to be anti-establishment so they create delusions about anime being ultra popular with the normalfags
