Which old games were too clunky for you?

Which old games were too clunky for you?

System Shock 1 is the only game I have stopped playing because the controls didn't feel good to use

I know this is a meme but some old games are clunky junkfest, especially the ones that make you control the camera with keyboard instead of mouse.

I started with monster hunter freedom unite, and I played tri and portable third, but after world I can't go back, I tried.

Thief 3, but I think that's actually just a clunky ass game by design and not because its old.

Super Metroid and Brandish

Every game before 2001 which isn't turn based

Mass effect 3

Weirdly, me1&2 were fine.

DMC games. I know everyone loves them but watching flawless animation get ruined by cancel slop instead of having beautiful flow and transition into each other like God of War, Metal Gear Rising, Nier.

zelda 1. i used a guide for the overworld because I don't have "child with unlimited time and 1 game" patience.

unironically swtor after playing wow classic

started with the peak of the franchise

every other game is just bad in comparison

Shame really

yakzopc.png - 304x166, 4.98K

DMC 1's camera feels like shit. Fixed cameras work well in RE where the combat is not mechanically difficult. In an action game with motion inputs that change based on where the camera is relative to Dante, it's just bad. I am yet to try any other games in the series, I wanna try 3 some time.

DMC1 was basically an accident. It's cool for what it is, and its creation is an interesting story. But it's really not that great to actually play. 3 is much better.

I can see why it's so beloved but I can't vibe with Dragon Quest III. This includes the remake.

picrel

Anything that (You) play

Early 3D platformers in an era before right analog camera control...

Earthbound. Clunkiness wasn't the only issue, the shitty art was worse. Moreover, there just wasn't anything to catch my interest in it to make it worth playing to begin with.

DMC1 was a LITERAL Resident Evil game bro. Now that explain why it drowns in RE design. Is your mind blown?

Not an "old" game per se, but playing Sonic Unleashed back when the Recomp dropped, I had to use HedgeModManager to make the Homing Attack A->A instead of A->X. It was stupid back then and completely archaic now.

Anything with tank controls makes me angry

TR1 but I didn't really gave it a fair shake

I was able to beat Kiwami 1 and 2 but once I got to 3 I just gave up and went straight to 7 and Judgement. 3 is so fucking bad

Resident Evil prior to 4 (4 is one of my all time favorite games as is the remake of 2)
DMC1 (I love 3)
MGS but especially 2 and 3
Every GTA game
Mario 64 (Galaxy 1 and 2 mog it hard)
Deus Ex (I love HR and MD)
System Shock 2
Souls and derivatives. The only one I like is Jedi Fallen Order/Survivor because you can chance the difficulty and there's a map

Deus Ex
PC FPS games from that entire era aged like milk and I refuse to pretend otherwise

EE makes it fun

Just play on realistic difficulty and go sniper to headshot everyone

space robocop the game

ouiee too clunkee

filtered

Gothic
Witcher 1

Armored core

Can’t stand playing Genma Onimusha, why the fuck can’t I use analog sticks

witcher 1

Ludo

none, because I'm not retarded and have a working brain and fine motor skills

Baldur's Gate 1, SNES DQIII

witcher 3

Breath of Fire Dragon Quarter. It was clunky since the day it came out

that's not real, you're trolling.
a human being cannot be this inept

Only decent post ITT. Everyone else is either trolling or deserves to be permabanned, what the fuck happened to this board?

None you fucking zoomer fuck

I will get a lot of replies saying "filtered" for this post, but Morrowind.
Holy shit, it's unironic agony.

You didn’t beat the game

Planescape: Torment.
Though the graphics are probably worse than the clunky controls and UI. I genuinely couldn't stare at the screen for more than 20 minutes without my eyes tearing up.

well then it's not a meme, it's just true

runescape
world of warcraft
witcher 3

gta 4

Tomb Raider III
I can play SM64 just fine, beat it too, but I don't particularly enjoy it, it's kinda unreal when a more modern game is objectively better than an old classic, you rarely ever see that happen.

I'm 100% serious. I'm bad at games and consider anything that is too difficult/obtuse to enjoy to be shit. If something doesn't click with me in 20 minutes, I drop it. I also look up any puzzle that stymies me for more than 30 seconds.

Reread this post and feel some shame for once in your life you pathetic fuck.

The one that baffles me is MGS3, that game aged like fine wine, sure, the shooting can be kinda clunky but still

Fallout 1
I dont know why but the interface is so fucking unwieldy and annoying
Never had this problem in any other isometric or turn based game

Nevermind just realized you used zoomer lingo in your original post, go beg a mod for a permaban and stop shitting this board up you stupid juvenile faggot.

oblivion. Refunded that

Final Fantasy IX having 20 second load screens before and after each battle. I don't care how good the gameplay and story are. Watching the fighters trickle in every time adds dozens of bloat. Square doesn't even need a full blown remake. Just fix the load screens and clean up the backgrounds.

file.png - 1000x669, 961.88K

I was about to post exactly this, which is really a shame because I very much like everything else about Fallout 1

Warhammer 40 000: Rites of War
I clicked my way through the tutorial and were pretty confused as nothing was explained. Then I opened the manual and the tutorial prompts were printed there. At that point I noped out.

For me it's anybody saying GTA 4.
It's by far the easiest game of the franchise. I can't recall anything that assraped me the way some missions in 3/Vice City/San Andreas did.
I haven't played 5 so maybe it's easier, but everything I've seen about it looks charmless and devoid of identity unlike previous games so I'm not interested in finding out.

I'm a millennial

Metal Gear Solid V The Phantom Pain

Haven't played it but an old game I think looks ugly as sin is SMRPG, the remake is an objective improvement even if the art direction has issues "muh soul" fags can cope all they want. Oblivion also never looked good, the remaster is a sidegrade, an improvement in some aspects and a downgrade in others.

The interface in Fallout is fucking incredible what is wrong with you?

Blood Omen
It has the weirdest fucking button mappings and menus

Why did they remove the ability to kick/shoot people in the junk in Bethesda games btw?
Child murder I get, but it's just silly when you can dismember an enemy or Bloody Mess them, but shooting somebody in the dick/cunt is a no-no.

Those 6-7/10 360 era games. I've replayed Red Faction Gorilla recently and everything just feels slightly off all the time.

RTWP CRPGs

You critically hit the female raider in the groin for 53 damage. She takes it like a man. Which is to say, it hurts a lot.

What's the point in shooting someone in the dick outside of the meme factor? I could see this as a perk or something.

fair enough I guess. being bad at something isn't something im gonna shit on, but why do you not even try to get better, why do you make it as easy and meaningless for yourself as possible?

that's a really shitty mindset to have and it keeps you weak

interestingly that's the one i agree with the most, almost. i think the body stance system is dumb in it. the fact you can only crouch while stationary and even just looking at your left analogue makes you go prone and start crawling is really annoying. either have crouch walk or give a bigger deadzone when crouching.

still a great game though

Jesus Christ I made this thread as a goofy dumb ironic shitpost, you casuals really do have awful taste in games

Not to mention the psx port blows cause load times.

Retards in good company etc. etc.

I've been playing games for decades and they are my escape from a life full of disappointment and despair. I want to win and feel good without challenge. I never play above normal.

again, fair enough and I don't know your life circumstance.

i hope you can find some fighting spirit and confidence and use that to make your life better

no you didn't, you meant every word retard

Of course it's some miserable sad sack my life is le misery and despair attention seeker. Wipe the mascara from your eyes with one of your spare Hot Topic shirts and stop acting like a faggot.

Stop treating that shitbag decently, you don't have nearly enough hatred for someone like that.

Majora's Mask.

For me it's NARC.
Not the original, the early 2000s remake.
In fairness, it's a very shitty GTA-like where it seemed like nobody involved cared about the quality and that's coming from somebody who likes his discount GTA slop.

lmao calm down
I'm trying

Thief 3 is not clunky, you just suck

Super Metroid

You would have to be legitimately retarded to think Super Metroid is clunky. It's one step short of Super Mario World.

Wasteland 1 is probably the last game that I stopped playing because it was too old.

I played old games (my first game was Dangerous Dave in the Haunted Mansion, just look at that trollface). My next game was Wolfenstein 3D, then Doom, Prince of Persia and so on. Played a lot of PS1 games too.
And I fucking hate the clunkiness of old games. Just fucking FUCK it. FUCK tank controls, FUCK mouse run in Doom, FUCK fixed camera. Controls in old games SUCKED NIGGER DICKS. Yes, I said it. It was bad at the time, but there was nothing better, so people adapted anyway.

Also FUCK Prince of Persia with its retarded controls

too old

Doesn't exist.

Couldn't go back to Rune Factory 2 after already having played 3. I then proceeded to never play any of the games after that ever again, and it seems like I dodged a bullet there.

file.png - 200x200, 12.91K

Banjo Kazooie, just didn't like the controls, the camera or the hideous character designs, I tried to get into that game twice and both times dropped it after about an hour.

Dangerous Dave is not old.

Not clunky but I don't enjoy Bethesda rpgs or bethesda-like games
I do like morrowind world but combat is pure cancer even for its time

worst minigames in the series
5 is better

Morrowind

miss

miss

miss

words

words

words

go here following a stupid map that came with the game

Yeah miss me with that gay shit

Devil may cry 1 I only beat by cheating in 150 yellow orbs.
Had to use rewind features for sonic and mega man
Had to use save states every time I killed an enemy without taking damage in doom

Are you a Polygon journalist by any chance?

I don't like the buttons for aiming diagonally and I don't like having to double tap in and out of morph ball cause if you tap once you just crouch.
Game just feels very unfun to play. I genuinely enjoyed NES Metroid more in every way.

Devil may cry 1 I only beat by cheating in 150 yellow orbs.

No shame in that. Game is hot fucking garbage and its a miracle they even got the greenlight to make 2 onwards.

Phantasy Star II

Mortal Kombat 1 to 3/UMK3.
Doesn't help that AI is a blatantly cheating fucking nigger.
I had zero problems with any of the post-Deadly Alliance games, so doubt the problem is just on my end.
In fact, I tried the Arcade Kollection and it's just as niggery as it was on NES.

I don't like the buttons for aiming diagonally

Not liking L and R for aiming diagonally is a (You) problem. If aiming diagonally came up often in the game then MAYBE I'd understand but it doesn't. This is a (You) problem.

I don't like having to double tap in and out of morph ball cause if you tap once you just crouch

This is 200% a (You) problem and you absolutely deserve to be ridiculed for it you fucking retard.

The fact that it's old isn't a problem, but it's just very mechanically limited.

i used to feel this way about classicvania games. these days ive learned to appreciate the difficulty that comes from the limited movement

megaman

Kinda same, yellow devil in MM1 is complete bullshit, and I thought black devil in X5 was bad, no way I'm playing more than a few megaman games, after 1 I just wanna finish 2, X, X5, Xtreme 1 and 2 and the legends games and be done with it.

Don't care, if I can't get used to it after 6 hours, then its clunky and stupid and bad.

As someone who plays a ton of Megaman and has beaten dozens of them, I think Black Devil is a cakewalk, but NES Yellow Devil still filters me to this day, and I refuse to pause cheat him.

clunkiness with SOUL:

WoW vanilla

Castlevania Circle of the Moon / SOTN

SSB Melee

abusable jank that adds flavor, fun or juicy overtuned oversights

Not inherently bad games, just dated clunkiness that are hindrance to the game's replayability today:

Valkyrie Chronicles (aiming point black, still miss)

Deus Ex (shit gameplay early game)

7th Saga, Earthbound (RNG level up stats up)

Literally every jrpg is "clunky" with fast forward/frame unlock. And by clunky I mean a time wasting piece of shit on normal speed

Earthbound (RNG level up stats up)

What, really?

Why would anyone ever think that’s a good mechanic?

I presume they felt it added replayability

FE4, love jugdrals story but I fucking hate castle management and the massive map size and uninteresting design

FE5 was peak tho

Armored Core 2

It has a rubberbanding check so if you're lower than the average for that level you'll gain more stats and if you're higher then you'll gain less, but it doesn't really help much and doesn't stop you from just eating shit due to bad levels in the early game.

Trying to play soul hackers DS after playing smt3,strange journey, DDS, persona 3/4, etc felt like shit.

you don't have nearly enough hatred for someone like that

i am passionate about vidya and the correct treatment of it, but I don't let that influence me to the point of treating other people like shit and dehumanising them for no reason. that just means you have issues

if he said all that shit and acted like how he plays games is the right way, it would be another story, but he's self aware and humble. so he's already a better human being than you. you think brutally lashing out at others online, from the safety of anonymity, when you know they are down makes you better.
that is actually pathetic

Keep telling that to yourself, old fart

I also look up any puzzle that stymies me for more than 30 seconds.

actually embarrassing

the steam release letting you skip the camera crawl and faster battle transitions makes it so much more bearable, but its still fairly slow

miss

miss

miss

this doesn't happen if you aren't retarded

i cant play computer games released prior to Ultima Underworld 2, that's my cut off.
Console games I have no cut off for due to controller simplicity

Any game with an awful camera and early 2000's Japanese games were notorious when it comes to those. Yes, that is what I need, a camera angle where you can corner yourself so to speak, and not see anything around you in a game with tons of enemies coming at you.

camera collides with walls and bounces around while enemies stunlock you

kino

I played Chrono Trigger SNES and somehow it wasn’t clunky at all

FF6 was clunky because you select a spell from a menu of 100 spells every single time

I love Final Fantasy 14, but I can't stand 11.

old 3d games just age so much worse than 2d ones

Ghosts N Goblins and Castlevania are good clunky

SM64 didn’t seem clunky to me. Perhaps OOT is clunky when you’re in water, I hate that when you enter water, there’s half a second of slowly moving forward in it before you can control yourself again

This and most DOS platformers.

Jazz-cover.jpg - 300x300, 40.31K

4 THOUGH

Marble Madness for the arcade and all of its ports, physics based ball rolling with isometric controls filtered me like no else, especially on keyboard.

The first 3d kings quest. That combat was ass

I don't have "child with unlimited time and 1 game" patience

The amount of times I've said this to myself almost word for word while playing an older JRPG (including ones I remember fondly), is unreal. Even when I somehow have the free time being spoiled for choice has completely destroyed my tolerance for second playthroughs and secret hunting.

so what do people mean by 'clunk' anyway? is it just unintutitive game design? or controls that kinda fight back? I'd argue old Resident Evil was clunky, but that was also the point

play FF12:Zodiac Age

added a x2 and x4 feature to speed up the game whenever you want

no idea how I managed without it as a kid

None really. For old PC games you need to read the manual. It also helpes to have played vidya before controlls were standardized.

Most of the time complaints about clunkiness are just intended mechanics like not being able to animation cancel something

Now for me the closest is KOTOR, that games controls were so bad i didnt finish the tutorial

FF12 is extra bullshit because the puzzles and secrets make no fucking sense, because they wanted you to buy the strategy guide for the game.

I sorta disagree, I struggle to find old 2D games that I find enjoyable to play from the 3rd and 4th gen that aren't the dozen at the top of any NES or SNES list

It's kino but the roll jump you have to do in that one corner in the electric level blows chunks because it hardly ever registers the input

This happens to me with a lot of old JRPGs, they feel like directionless unbearable grind, they throw you in a village or location surrounded by an open world swarming with random encounters and expect you to brute force progression while blindly going in any direction in the map draining your resources through trial and error, not to mention they feel samey across different franchises, playing saga felt exactly the same as playing DQ, just with a different skin.

super metroid
its probably my fault for trying to emulate it on kbm but the learning curvy for the floaty jumping and fixed angle shooting was pissing me off too much to continue past norfair

The early Tomb Raiders and Resident Evils.

morrowind

Am I the only one who reads this in Mort Goldman's voice?

DMC1. It needs a remake badly.

No it doesnt

Agreed. 2 too.

Goofy ahh reply

the first three Resident Evil games. i didn't grow up with them, so when I finally tried them when i was like 26; i just could gel with the controls. recently id also say marvel ultimate alliance. i tried to get into it, but it was just so off putting.
i'd include witcher, but I think thats just me being unfair

couldn't*

I tried it when it first released and I didn't like it.

Ah, kramers epic quest for hentai, awful "game", really, but a lot of soul.

"Fifty years ago we'd have you upside down with a fucking fork up your ass."
iconic quotes in gaming history

it was buggy and everything killed me too quickly, but kicking stuff was fun

does 2 have anything of value to warrant getting a remake? you could just make a new game at that point

you cant stab the grilled meat with your dagger and eat it off the dagger

whats the point of life

I hate 0 and the Kiwami games so much. It introduced the worst types of fans.

Fallout 1, I'm not even joking when I say the game gave me a headache 10minutes in for some reason. The movement and combat are actual ass, definitely a game that is better watched than played.

Paradise Cracked
This game was the final boss of slavjank for me, it wasn't even 2 hours of gameplay when I gave up, and I was playing supposedly remastered version

Astounding autismo, I respect

Hello AVGN.

ONLY 3 DAYS???

If you complain about old games being "clunky" you should kill yourself

For real though, it's clunky compared to OoT. Z targeting lags behind for some reason and takes a minute to adjust and they got rid of fast swimming which I know is redundant because of the Zora mask but it's still useful to have until you get the Zora mask.

Brandish

The world needs more Dark Revenant tier remakes.

SS1 is better than 2 there i said it

I thought the original Tomb Raider controls felt awful back when those games were current, and I still think so today. Some old games really are "clunky"

Call it cope, but this sort of thing is why I don't feel too guilty about using GameFAQs, since without the Internet I would have been consulting a paper guide or giving up anyway. I try not to use it as a crutch for main story progression if the game is designed properly (ie it's simple, but I felt very rewarded talking to everyone in OG FF7 during sequences like the market or finding Cloud and hate depriving myself of that/being deprived of it by modern frictionless game design) but when it's secret level/obtusely hidden sidequest/underexplained complex minigame mechanic time I just can't feel shame 'asking' for help.

this bait deserves more bites
