He couldn't deceive or manipulate L, de-facto, nobody could deceive L if we think about it clearly, he would also mostly keep his suspicions in the dark until its useful for him to reveal them as facts, he's the one who figured out Kira's identity through random deaths after all. Ayanokoji never faced similar things as what was going on in Liar's Game however as well, in a regular school setting Ayanokoji could be decent but these guys are all vets.

Again that's ayanokoji not akiyama, his manipulation isn't just about getting results, it's about doing it through others without them realizing it. He gets people to act out his plans under the impression it's their own will or that he's helping them. Akiyama, on the other hand, is more of a straight shooter, he wins through logic, psychology, and reading people, but he doesn’t play the long-con emotionally manipulative angle the same way Ayanokoji does. Ayanokoji is literally built to be the ghost puppetmaster in the back it's the whole point of the series

To add to this guy's post, Akagi is extremely intelligent. In his own manga there is no one to play against that matches his intelligence so he vastly outperforms them (it's different in Ten though). It's just that he's often placed in a handicap thanks to the money difference so he's forced to pull outlandish and almost suicidal moves.
Akagi's weakness are his principles. In a fair game he's against cheating and he'd take a loss without complaining, while the other players would likely cheat or figure out some bullshit rule to keep on going.
To defend Kaiji, he's also always fighting with severe handicap. He'll do everything to bend his chances of winning over 50%. In the end, thanks to unseen factors it does end up coming down to luck, but that's gambling.
Anyway, was thinking since others were from gambling anime and there were two that weren't. L could easily be replaced with Yugi Mutou (OG high stakes gambling chuuni) since the rest of the characters are all about gambling if we exchanged Lelouch as well as those two are different types of genres entirely. Why not something like Katagiri Yuuichi from Tomodachi Game?
