Buddy. Tariffs literally just make goods from other countries more expensive. If they have to pay 10 dollars to bring a 100 dollar item into the nation then whatever American buys that item will be expected to pay the 10 dollars when they purchase it. The foreign companies pay the tariff to bring the item into the nation. That effectively gets added onto the manufacturing expense for the item. The final purchaser of the item is going to be burdened with that added expense at the end of the day.
Trump enacted the tariffs knowing for a fact it would make foreign manufactured goods more expensive for Americans. He's banking on America increasing its own industrial capacity as a result. In the mean time, yeah shit will probably get more expensive. In the long term... shit will probably still be more expensive than it is rn but at least it will be made in America again? Probably? In the long term, Americans still get goods for cheap, and China does not maintain it's position as the "World's Factory". America wins.
