There's something about it's skills system that kinda sucks.
The world looks good. The narrative is good. But some of the gameplay... has issues. I like the parry system and the unique classes in E33 to a degree, but they kinda frustrate you after a while. The 6 move slots you have never seem to be enough. Often you have to waste time with a base attack just to use a special and it's just like "why can't I just use it immediately" for me.

Parrying is kinda fun though. Though often the cues I use for one parry never match another parry for a different creature and it gets kinda vague.

mandatory party split right before the 2nd Renoir fight (I love nuking things with AoEs)

progression-gating easy fast travel (worst part is the story makes clear there is Esquie fucking with you to collect his rocks so you’ll all go on an adventure together, motherfucker is the strongest thing in the world that isn’t a Painter)

Travel time in general could be faster and sometimes Esquie gets stuck on invisible obstacles

Sirene’s level goes from daunting to comical once you realise the meta is to just give up on the combat system and just click the majority of enemies to death with your guns. Actually punished for trying to be skilful because there is no (at least, not at my progression) accuracy-bonus in the game but shooting never misses

Parrying is a complete crapshoot (but this also means sometimes you can counter shit without fully knowing what you’re doing; expected Renoir to take a few tries and ended up clearing his first winnable fight on my first try)

It’s rough around the edges, but very good overall. Art and music certainly BTFO everything else this year so far.

Honestly I completely understand if you didn’t like it even though I’m having a good time. Some of the less noticeable things I didn’t bother to bring up are navigation being a bitch until you realise the game wants you to literally follow the lights, platforming being clumsy and the Gestral minigames being psychotically unreasonable. Didn’t bring them up because one’s not main story-relevant and the rest were workable for me, but I could see them being a problem. Art, music and plot/character interactions really carry this game for me, if I were judging it on pure gameplay I’d judge it more harshly.

I feel that the developers were expected people to use Gustave to set up Marked combo attacks with Maelle and be patient enough to wait two (2) turns to zap someone with his mechanical arm. And to use Verso as a combination of that, situational attacker and a one-man Luster Candy. It’s telling how they split the party right before Renoir.

The problem is that the game also gives you First Strike, Inverse Affinity and all the Energising Starts relatively early on (1 as early as unlocking the first main area hub IIRC), winning the Gestral Tournament with Maelle unlocks a sword so comically busted it’s stats are utterly irrelevant compared to starting Maelle off in her strongest stance, Sciel’s existence massive increases your AoE firepower early on (and quickly relegates Lune to being a healslut. Old Lumiere even throws enemies weak to Dark at you!), and you’re directly incentivised to keep Monoco in the party as often as possible once you get him.

So forming a Sciel/Monoco/Maelle team to blast everything to death before it can even take a turn is more tempting than any other playstyle.

Pretty fair desu, I want SaGa 3 remake to be by the same fags because whoever the fuck made 2 remake actually was talented.
