She absolutely was a dictator in that she wouldn't allow Verso to die, and his appearance and manner suggest that he was aware of and resentful. The smiling of those in attendance does also suggest that they are either aware and purposely ignoring it, or they are blissfully unaware because of Maelle. Finally, the discordant notes and her decaying face show that the situation is not a pleasant one.

The fact is that the entirety of the game is borne out of loss that has not been healed from. Destroying the canvas was NOT necessary, but of the two outcomes the one in which it was destroyed is probably better altogether, because with the true and final death of the last remnants of Verso the family can begin to heal. That said, I maintain that there should be a third outcome in which the family can heal without needless destruction. If my brother were to die there is no reason I would have to destroy everything he ever created. I could heal my scars with the ones I love while still keeping close the things he created, if they were that important.

The game makes it abundantly clear that Aline (and thus the family) could not heal without the destruction of the canvas, but it's incredibly contrived.

A painter bringing one of Aline's humans back from their chroma (remember them talking about being able to feel Gustave's Chroma, and Maelle saying she can see Sciel/Lune as chroma) is different from some reincarnation system child verso made for the gestrals.

We see them sad over Verso's grave, but I wouldn't really call that healing. It has the greater potential for healing as compared to Maelle's ending, but Clea clearly wants no part of it and their murderers are still out there, and to arrive to this moment they had to sentence an entire world of people to death...I don't kno that I would call that right necessarily

Regardless, if you consider the painted people as not real that means Maelle's is just completely alone in the end in make belief land surrounded by a bunch of sims she controls.

I chose the Verso ending because in the end that is what I feel would be canon. The canvas, despite the people living in it, simply could not continue. The Painters are horrible people, the real Verso's soul was being tortured endlessly by being forced to paint, and the Canvas world was completely ruined. For a famous example, think how Final Fantasy Tactics Advance can't actually come up with a coherent argument for why the children must go back to their horrible circumstances or why Ivalice is a bad place, and so has to make up an excuse that their life forces are being drained if they stay. Or for another example Anon Babble loves to meme about, Persona 5. Honestly, the game drops in quality in Act 3, it becomes capeshit level of plot convenience, Act 1 was a group of survivors trying to find their way on their own in this mad world, there's a sense of camaraderie and they are constantly discussing about what's better for the group, for the success of the Expedition and for Lumiere, yeah Maelle and Sciel are introduced as the BETTER Gustavé of the party because one was able to kill monsters on their own without the Lumina device, but at least had Verso watching her back and the Curator providing her resources and the other was able to become the champion of the Gestrals without the Lumina Converter and nobody to protect her.
In act 2 since it's just the introduction of a generic "4th character from Final Fantasy" it means that he has all answers of where to go because the writers lost the will/time to create discussions of what they need to do.
