I've only played the arcade mode with the same 4 characters I like, but what's the problem with strive? Feels like all the recent fighting games are subpar

compared to all the previous games, it's dumbed down as FUCK, more so than Xrd (which was already simpler than XXAC)
other than that, it's just kinda shit, every time i play it i can't help but think "man, i could be playing street fighter or something."

Very dumbed down in comparison to previous installments in favor of 'ease of access' which ends up making every tactical problem an insurmountable wall at low level, and results in inconsistency at high level of play.

All characters have a bunch of tools removed, or end up being entirely redesigned, which ends up causing it to no longer feel like the same game. Turns out reducing screen size reduces effective design space.

Game is also very geared towards aggression with poor defensive options, some characters have so much reward for risk that they can commonly kill you on roundstart if you guess wrong. Even if you can come back from a bad start, you are in very bad position to do so, with opponent having all the resources to play neutral with, and you having none.

Which game? Currently trying to learn JBA:HFTF.

I've racked up 200 hours on Litchi in the past month, and realized what the actual problem with the game is. It's not fun when people are constantly complaining and bitching and seething about your character even when they're winning, and when this applies to 80% of the cast. At least when I play +R people's attitude is 'oh yeah I'm also just pressing buttons'. In BB people seem to insist on there being some kind of well thought-out higher order to the game structure, rather than it just being a bunch of bullshit.

I like these games, but the fact of the matter is they have some extremely annoying characters to fight. It's a double-edged sword because that they have interesting things to do on offense also often means that that offense is a pain in the ass to go against. I think if you're going to play an anime fighting game you just have to accept that some characters are going to be a pain in the ass, and that both goes for accepting that you're going to have to fight some annoying characters and accept that others are going to complain about your character being annoying.

It's not even necessarily a matter of balance, people always single out Testament, Zappa and Baiken in +R, and I do think Baiken and Zappa are some of the worst to fight in the game to be fair, but even weaker characters are a chore. Justice is one of the lamest character designs mechanically I've ever seen in my life, but she's not considered top tier by anybody.

It is offputting that a game may have longer wait times to find people to play, less people playing in each region making getting a good connection not as reliable and the remaining small population of players all being way ahead of any beginner interested in trying it, as opposed to the broader level of skills in bigger games.

I don't think people avoid low-population games because they think it's impossible to find people to play unless the game has thousands of players, but I do think they avoid them because one game having thousands of players and one game having only a couple of hundred, if that, means that they'll have an easier time finding someone to fight that they'll actually enjoy playing against in the former.

You can completely negate left/right mixes with Deflect Shield OS
IB into Throw can give you an easy sideswap in the corner
Backdashes need to be called out either with active moves or delayed buttons
YRC/Blue Burst gets you out of pressure
Gold Burst is a safe on block reversal
Tons of characters have meterless reversals, almost every character has a metered reversal
And then you can get into character specific defensive options, like 2K/Throw OS against Slayer's Dandy Step, or using Chestnut with Dizzy against Ramlethal's sword toss

Against regular characters, you have a shit ton of defensive options
The problem is the couple degenerate top tiers like Happy Chaos, Goldlewis or Nago that completely invalidate these options and just freely run their mix with no counterplay other than guessing right

Melty Blood Act Cadenza was fairly balanced. Then they made MBAACC, made a boss character playable without any changes, and made C-Roa charged orb +26 on block.

I used to play with randos but I realized that I hardly enjoy it that way. Most of the userbase only play with full CaS characters whose appearance is hit-or-miss. A big issue with CaS is that their voice lines are always one of a few generic sets, which I'm thoroughly bored of listening to. They don't get special interaction lines like normal characters, either. I don't know why people want to listen to that instead of enjoying the actual SC6 voice acting. The height system for CaS can unironically mess with gameplay and it's impossible to create characters with appropriate (same as their originators) heights for Astaroth and Ivy fighting styles. Other characters can be wrong heights too and it messes with hitboxes and hurtboxes, see . That move is supposed to reliably hit OTG (it might not seem like it but that's because it only got that property in SC6 and the animation is much older) yet it completely whiffs at point blank range. This only happened to me against CaS.

I just don't connect with most of the community in this game, but I really like playing with people from Anon Babble. I spent some time making custom outfits too, but I never made a full CaS outside of Libra and one other character.

It's in a pretty bad spot now too because they're on par with Under Night for using the same graphics for the past 10+ years now and they need something like a graphical overhaul to really bring in any new eyes, although a fucking functioning PC port and online playability would be the most helpful at this point in time.
Since it's a series built around the Homing system, making new spriters bigger might compromise the verticality of the game.
Forget Omega, Xtend needs some technical overhauls than new characters.

Fighting games are a genre that is inherently inaccessible to everyone but the top of videogame players.
The only way a fighting game can be popular is by neutering it so deeply and heavily it stops being a quality fighting game; that's why Street Fighter 6 is both the worst fighting game of the decade and at the same time the most popular one. So basically as long as a fighting game is good it will have a very small playerbase because only the elite of the elite can handle it.
You can't have it both ways and have a massive playerbase AND a deep, good game.

The fighting game fanbase refuses to accept this harsh truth and instead blames a billion factors for non-SF games having small playerbases.

Well, the netcode isn't really good but it's not terrible if you live in NA or Europe and you play with people from the same region. SC1 on Fightcade has better netcode with rollback, you can play that instead.

What fighting game DOESN'T have people complaining about gimmicks, oki, and lop-sided character match-ups? It's a universal "issue" but hardly something that can really be fixed permanently.
