Most of my favorite games came from Sqauresoft and early Sqeenix. They USED (emphasis on USED) to make fun Japanese weeb games. But now, almost every major serise they own/develop has been raped and murdered beyond repair. Final Fantasy? Mid at best, FF7 dick sucking at worst. Kingdom Hearts? Couldn't live up to KH2, and every game since 2005 has gotten worse and worse. Dragon Quest? Fails to innovate in any meaningful way, and has generally plateaued.

Final Fantasy, yes. But Dragon Quest, not at all. They're mostly calm compared to Sonic, FF, Smash and LoL fans.

Kingdom Hearts (2002)

The combat is considered to be too 'clunkly' by today's standards, but it's by no means unplayable. It's not as flashy or as snappy as KH2s combat, but it has it's own unique, almost rhythmic style to it. Despite the many normie reddit KH memes out there, it's best not to button mash in KH1; always let the animation finish before continuing a combo. Magic is also an incredibly useful tool that you'll want to utilize to it's fullest. You could just go through the whole game never once using spells in any meaningful way (besides Cure), but you'd be missing out on it's utility.
As for the level/world design, the maps can be a bit convoluted at times. And I'd be lying if I said they were perfect. First time players will most likely get lost in certain worlds/parts of the worlds, but I personally feel KH1s maze-like layouts lead to wonderful exploration. This game absolutely makes sure to hide secrets where it can.

Kingdom Hearts Chain of Memories (2004)/Re:Chain of Memories (2007)

The real-time card based combat will be a hit or miss. I feel the games approach can work if you can sink some patience and willingness into it, but otherwise, it will probably be the most eritating game to get through if yoy don't enjoy the card combat. The OG GBA version of the game has it's charm, but I'd honeslty just play the remake included in 1.5 + 2.5.

Kingdom Hearts 2 (2005)

Combat is literally high class kino.
The worlds, however, are incredibly dull design wise. The level design in KH2 takes the complete opposite approach of KH1s design philosophy; worlds are just glorified enemy arenas with Disney wallpapers slapped on top. There is little to no exploration. Though this was probably done to prop up the amazingly fun combat the game possess.
I'd say you should also check out the original DS version 358/2 Days and Re:coded. Otherwise, skip the rest of the serise.

If your up for the challenge, yes. Great thing about KH hard modes is that they don't resort to making thr enemies damage-sponges. The way they go about it instead is that you and your enemies are stronger. So both both yoy and the heartless/bosses will hit much harder. The challenge is very enjoyable, but I'm not sure if it's a good way to start these games. I'd say for KH1, play on normal mode, and if you like the game enough, give proud mode a shot. For KH2, go with either normal or Proud mode. You should experince Critical Mode after beating KH2 atleast once; helps in the long run.

Rebirth probably sold around 3 million. The problem is, it costs 100x more to make Rebirth than it did DQIII HD. So it needs to sell like 6+ million just to break even. And the first game barely reached that number. Sequels usually sell half as much, unless there's something unique to hype. And a lot of FF fans were already mad at the first game. So it definitely didn't get a positive hype boost.

You have a good point. I don’t really hate them. Their games are goofy and at times take themselves too seriously but in general are just trying to be fun. I am just disappointed that their projects can never reach their full potential because they’re held back by their corporate structure and the fact that every project will be beholden to shareholders and board members.

What they should do is get their all-stars together and just give tell them “Make the best video game ever created, here’s your budget so don’t go over this amount” with zero additional input or restrictions. FF7 for example thrived in an environment of raw creativity, with the development story being famous for how the team was really enthusiastic and excited about what they were slowly bringing to life.
