The key is to "make a deal" with your opponent.

Don't shotgun Fuwalos before they summon link Spirit. Instead wait until they have materials to synchro.
They want to get Spirit Dragon out, and they'll think it's worth it to give you the 1 draw (going +0).
They might even take the challenge because they figure "I'm almost done anyway" and give you like 3+ draws.

Nobody on ladder is playing Fiendsmith control, it's all SE FS or Yubel FS or WF FS. The cards are 10x better in a combo shell than coping with primite control.

Maxx C is usually a sub-par hand trap to back up a built board. Just fully overwhelming thing by having an actual interrupting hand trap is usually better than praying you can draw into a hand trap that matters before they can OTK.
It feels fucking awful when they do it to you but it doesn't actually matter that often.

You're saying that but the stats show the card is going down in popularity hard so there has to be a reason to not run 3 in every deck. I don't see people not runing Maxx C because the opponents are beryl drillbeam passing. That's exactly what'd happen if you Maxx c them too isn't it? The rest of my points stand still, if I'm playing white forest and I get maxx c'd, I'm setting and passing and hoping for the best. If fuwalos'd I can set up an omni by breaking even (+1 draw) AND set up some plays (including special summons from my hand/backrow/graveyard if I'm using the millenium engine or toy box!) instead of giving my opponent like 3 cards to get there.
You know, what the fuck, even if it's not insanely important the use case going first does. If I'm going first and my deck doesn't pitch for cost and I see a fuwalos in my hand I say "shit, dead card". If I see a Maxx C I know it's either a one two punch, or it's eating one of my opponent's ash blossoms on the way back that's going to make my life easier in case my effects are ash-able in some capacity. At the end of the day it's the sum of small grievances that makes fuwalos weaker than maxx c and not an autoinclude.

It doesn't have the same play rate because the stats come MD players, who are bad at the game mostly, and not playing optimally. They've been conditioned to run 3 Maxx C for years, while Fuwa is new. Even if your WF deck makes an omni under Fuwa it goes card neutral and caused you to make 1 disruption instead of 5. That's more value than every other handtrap not named Maxx C.
It doesn't matter if Fuwa is dead going 1st, but people will see the handful of times where it is or their opponent ignores it with Beryl and they decide that FEELS bad so they cut it, when all the other times it ends a turn early or entirely are taken for granted.

It's unhealthy when used in combo but healthy when used in low to the ground decks. MD is experiencing it really bad right now because the devs have let combo run rampant, this is the most powerful combo format the game has seen in years. TCG/OCG have seen it used much more healthily for this reason.

There's some truth in that it lets non-meta decks extend through hand traps better while improving their consistency, but also it lets everything extend their combos from the extra deck and just raises endboard ceilings in stupid ways and lets you insulate your main combo.

Not prehitting beatrice gave fiendsmith a horrible reputation and that's the way the engine shouldn't be used. That month snake eyes fiendsmith was literally fucking unstoppable. Besides that the engine is a tool that evens out the playing field and isn't doing anything absurdly egregious by itself.

Fiendsmith doesn't punish you for playing handtraps, the basic mechanism to fighting back going second. If anything they're vulnerable to them, unlike unicorn and fenrir which gets slammed first fucking thing on the turn without giving you a window to respond.

Yeah, honestly felt the same way. Adra being UR was manageable, but having to shell for multiple URs across different archetypes just to make one deck viable is brutal. The pricing really doesn't make sense with how little longevity some of these engines end up having. Argostar and PUNK should be much cheaper considering the state of combo right now. Might just wait like you said—Odion support might shake things up in a better direction anyway.

That is not even remotely true. SE as it is right now is leagues above where Ryzeal/Maliss are. It has the highest ceiling and most ability to play through handtraps. Powercreep isn't an ever rising scale, sometimes we go backwards or sideways like how post-Tear the best decks are still worse than full power Tear.
