i have a theory of my own and its that urotsuki intentionally suppresses her past, her feelings and basically everything that relates to herself on a personal level, most likely from self-hatred and believing she committed horrible acts.
in the game you can see a lot of instances of her own image appearing as npcs or obstacles or other kinds of sprites, sometimes hidden as tiles placed in an arrangement to look like her face ect, that are often times VERY hidden away. if these sprites are not hidden, they are obviously corrupted in some way, such as in the sands of self, or even become malicious chasers.
a strong reinforcement is the child effect, especially the path towards it which is popularly theorized to involve themes of child abandonment by her parents, however i would also link it back to urotsuki suppressing images of herself from self-hatred and sadness as well, since the child effect can be argued to be the most 'personal' and realistic effect that has the strongest ties to the real world. if viewed this way then it makes sense for it to be buried very deep down.
there are also moments where the effect is referenced or given hints towards the location of from various other areas in the game, which can be interpreted as the self-suppression failing and urotsuki being momentarily forced to confront her feelings, if only for a few seconds.
next, this isn't as strong as a reinforcement since it is just one single world, but i believe the area sealed rainbow pillars by oneirokamara is at least related or treads on the topic of suppressing feelings of the personal self, particularly happy and joyous memories. i theorize that urotsuki perhaps feels as though she is unworthy or has done something very wrong, and has such sealed away these memories to one of the deepest corners of her mind, in the form of these pillars in picrel.

that sealed rainbow pillars interpretation is just that, my own personal belief in what this area is supposed to mean, but i believe it is supported by numerous factors, such as the depth of the world, the worlds before and after being similarly dark and foreboding, and the sombre music in the background that contains bird chirping sfx which would traditionally be associated with happiness and comfort.
you could also additionally add the chainsaw effect as evidence that she believes herself to have committed immoral acts, but this holds less weight in my opinion because yume nikki itself and a lot of other fangames feature some kind of weapon as an effect that is capable of killing npcs and destroying obstacles, and it might be likely that the chainsaw is supposed to point towards some other unrelated theory instead of this one.
i thought about this idea in my head for a while but i didnt really hone in on it until i played the game a few days ago and once again found an image of urotsuki in some far-away place i wouldnt have been able to find without a map or trial and error, in a familiar location ive visited many times before. it was a teleporter that resembled her face that took me to an area that was covered in depictions of her purple checkered shirt pattern.
if any anons agree or disagree please tell me why because i think there's some shoddy bits and pieces to this theory, but also some decent supports in other places, and i have to admit i havent visited most of the areas in the game yet so i could be missing an area that instantly crumbles my theory to pieces.
