Yes, but only after level 20. Which is also when the cell drop increase starts having a diminishing return (even though other stats would give you MORE at this point). You will get fucking NOTHING from the defense nymphs with just 20 points invested, but shit slightly improves at 30. Slightly.

As far as we know there are 3 castes of Nymphs being soldiers, mechsmiths and everyone else, whereby soldiers have the best fighting ability, mechsmiths have the best crafting ability and all the other plebs are nothing special and presumably scavenge or sell shit.

if playing with a controller. when using mouse to aim you don't need lock-on. they are very accurate and still hit hard even past max range
they pretty much allow you to skip using lock-on and just aim manually with the added benefit of far better range

just use the falu head, it's barely worse than taka for melee prof but at least you can somewhas shoot stuff

There's only so many melee heads and the takama one obviously fits the katana aesthetic so well. I use the faluracan head with my thermal greatsword load-out and takama with sabi.

They're all very doable, but Accumulation Zone's probably the hardest.

great forest is probably the easiest if you can get around the enemy shields. melee works great there. upturned forest can be hard but gets simpler if you gear up right for it. the boss is likely the be the hardest of the three

each has 3 zones and bosses. you need to beat the first 2 of each tree to progress to the fourth set of 3 zones

the fourth one having 2 more zones since central cavern was the first

the most reliable way to take out enemies is to get their attention from far away, dodge and wait until they reload, then get closer and kill them.

are you using rear weapons a lot, or otherwise attacking from outside your weapon's effective range? Other than the great forest flamethrower tanks having very high physical resist there shouldn't be anything too overly tanky in any of the stages available to you. Though they are a step up from the tutorial stage enemies.

You identify the gimmicks and git gud at countering them

Upper level (Upturned Forest etc)

Enemies with lots of homing thermal attacks but rather fragile, learn to dodge the homing attacks and pack flying legs for exploration

Middle level (Great Forest etc)

Enemies with lots of phys armor and DPS, but generally slow so you can easily kite them or attack their weakpoints. Pack thermal weapons and mobile legs; rocket/flying legs can be better for exploration.

Lower level (Accumulation Zone etc)

Enemies that do phys damage that inflict corrosion (DoT), which can be annoying when exploring. Has several fuck you enemies like the bubble launcher tanks or sandworms which can fuck you up if you're not careful, but enemies are otherwise fragile. Has 4 spider spawners that will shit out 3 spiders that home to your location but stay dead if you kill them. There's not much vertical exploration so you're better off going fast on the ground.

For starters, the trees represent the layers, not just one area. Not everyone realizes this at first. Lower level starts with Accumulation Zone and moves on to forbidden domain & so forth.

Upper levels demands physical attacks and something that can blast shit out of the air. Without that, it's a pain in the ass. The first area boss is the hardest boss in the game.
Mid levels want thermal weapons. The scimitar you likely got in the starting dungeon will carry you at first. The best weapon is the Trio which you can find in the first area of the lower levels.
Lower levels want dakka. Use the Clest you got in the starting dungeon. Fucking upgrade it. Learn to wait for the enemy to cool down & unload on them from behind. Accumulation zone is noted to be a nightmare because of a certain gimmick that brainlets can't figure out on their own. Prove you aren't one.

Order doesn't matter that much, BUT, do accumulation zone (lower level) before you do Great Forest (mid level). The one quest NPC that travels across multiple layers appears in those zones in that order. Also, it pays to get the Trio.
Upturned Forest (top level) will net you some of the best flying frames in the game which will allow you to get around fast and make the game far less of a slog.

Also, popping your head down into the Forbidden Domain will get you the SAAR (go ahead and get the indian joke out of your system), the second best assault rifle in the game. Sadly, the best is dropped by an enemy nymph you can't fight until you can remove barriers.

The sar is the game's answer to the clest not having enough penetration for anything beyond the first level. I love using it in the upper layer, but it feels like a bitch move to use a second-level weapon in the first level of another layer. Your physical options really are limited at the beginning of the game. Your thermal weapons will outnumber them 2 to 1.

The lower level enemies are also really weak to overheat buildup.

I've never really played mecha games before. What other games are like Doll's Nest? I like the mazelike level design and customization autism.

Demons Souls, Dark Souls, and From's action RPGs in general if you want more level design like this. Demons Souls in particular is what Dolls Nest is closest to. Armored Core series if you want combat and customization that's close to it. I can't think of any other mecha games that combine the mecha combat with this sort of exploration though.

The Trio is so good it's kind of upsetting. Every X-3 level enemy having tons of armor does really limit the viable choices.

That said, stealth mod early honestly trivializes like half the patrol-heavy sections if you know where you're going, so it's kind of worth being a bastard for that alone.

Early AC games have some mazes due to the story mostly taking place in underground cities but its still a mission oriented series so you typically only explore for about 10 minutes max. AC is customization autism 100% though, its where Dolls Nest took inspiration from. Though it depends on what aspect of customization you like. Dolls Nest is honestly super simple/bare bones in comparison to AC. If you don't like fucking around with generators/radiators for cooling and energy management it might suck, but if thats your thing then you'll probably love it. 1st-3rd gen are my favorite AC games but I think every generation and game is fun its own way. Dolls Nest is most similar to 3rd gen(AC3-ACLR) and 5th gen(ACV/ACVD). Also Chromehounds is cool too.

Its not amazing in AC3, but I liked learning to manage cooling and watching enemy ACs detonate when you overheat them(I think that was mostly Nexus though). Also balancing high powered boosters with their heat output in Last Raven. It wasn't perfectly implemented but it was interesting. There's so many mechanics from 3rd gen I missed having, Last Raven specifically, when moving to AC4. Part destruction especially felt like it could have been so much more if they bothered to refine it instead of ditching it after 1 game. Slicing an arm off with a well timed OB slash felt amazing. Also for me, Last Raven was the definition of "I like the way this sucks". It was immensely satisfying to beat out all the stupid odds stacked against you. I will admit some of the missions like the bomb disarming were kinda shit, but I can still remember waking up at 5 am to try and beat Bolt in the reconnaissance mission before school and the pride when I finally did.

Returns increase as you invest more. 16-30 is twice as much as 1-15, if you're looking at shields, ep and bp. Weight is only for if you're barely overencumbered.
Reload is good too, instead of making the circle go faster it actually just finishes the reload prematurely.

A lot of the stats scale up the more points you invest.
30 barrier ends up being 3000 extra barrier points.

A lot of stats have a decent initial boost, a fat load of shit, and then the last 80% of the total boost in like the last 5-10 points of the skill because why the fuck not. Typically you'll want to drop a bit into barrier and then either spread out or go deep in one at a time.

Yeah I dunno why they capped it to 100. Maybe so that the achievement for maxing out your level wouldn't be a tremendous pain to achieve.
