uhhh.... le ppl hate le turnbased!!!!

*E33 sells a bajillion copies*

The fun comes mostly from building and customizing your party rather than the actual combat, and that goes over most people's heads, especially when we live in a time where most people just google the most meta strategy and don't explore anything for themselves.

Because it fucking sucks and not engaging. People come to video games to play them not tell it to attack an enemy. They want to feel something. Turn baseds turn off so many people. Its not stimulating.

Earl turn based was only a compromise of necessity, since computers weren't powerful enough to simulate real time combat. That's not true anymore, so turn based shouldn't exist anymore either.

Low attention spans. It's also why they like open world games filled with pointless distractions.

especially when we live in a time where most people just google the most meta strategy and don't explore anything for themselves.

Lazy millenials do but zoomers don't know how to google.

I personally like turn based combat as it allows me to play at my own pace, meaning I can take my time to form a strategy during the fight, and even take a short break from the game for any reason during battle.

"people hate turn based"

Honkai Star Rail is a ludicrously profitable gacha

Clair Obscur is a ludicrously high selling game

both are turn based

This statement doesn't stand long to scrutiny.

people hate gacha

yet, gacha is highly profitable

Two things can be true.

Anyone who says they don't like turn-based combat is outing themselves as a sub-70 IQ retard.

True enough. I too detest the concept of gacha at its core, but it doesn't change the fact there are many who pump with cash it like a senile elderly oxygen mask user at the casino with a fresh social security check. Unfortunately.

Easy mode is locked behind grinding for hours.
Action games let you pick easy mode from a menu.

What about Toejam turn based?

4 niggas in a row aint the only turn based

ATB is just turn based with extra steps.

They just ask on discord or whatsapp. It's the same thing.

Final Fantasy 4 is one of the all time great games. Classic shit. Ebert was right, video game aren't art. If they were people would revere the classics

There were plenty of NES RPGs that played in real time. Turn based RPGs were always a deliberate decision.

So the existence of plebs invalidates the existence of patricians? In that case movies are even more of a joke.

indeed. ff4 has FIVE NIGGAS across TWO ROWS.

The first tactical strategy game to simulate real time was the 1982 graphic adventure The Hobbit, which automatically inputted the WAIT command and advanced the gamestate by one turn if a command was not entered after a period of time. Every game after this was turn based by intention.

People don't hate turn based gameplay(see: TCGs, Civilization, Fire Emblem, FF Tactics, etc.). People dislike JRPG four niggas in a row combat because it's boring and mindless. But even in the context of that there are ways to make it fun(eg, competitive Pokemon, Lufia II's Ancient Cave.). Even shit like Undertale was amusing for a couple hours.

have to go shit

come back and find my party has been abducted by goblins and a cave albino is eating my corpse

Bilbo deuces.jpg - 610x483, 45.04K

because FF4 was unironically too complex and too hard and too confusing for the weak meager minds of early gamers, and as a response, rather than developers simply more clearly communicating enemy reactions and rage timers and spell speeds and wait delays and action priority, every single JRPG since has just knocked enemy health low enough that you can just mash attack to win, and the 'hard' ones simply have a dozen versions of yburns that wipe you on a strict timer if you dont kill them first.

Not necessarily movies but art in general. They aren't treated as art. Another excellent point on why vidya isn't art is because true criticism and analysis of video games hasn't happened. Every other actual art has this except video games

People who bitch about turn-based games, or even ATB, should go play other shit and stop trying to change it for their own interests. It doesn't have to appeal to you specifically. I'm also going to take the extra step as many have before me and call you ADHD-ridden if it really loses your interest that much.

When people say "turn-based" they mean a combat system not defined by turns, but by the fact there's little to no movement or map mechanics. Fire Emblem and Final Fantasy are both "turn-based", with the latter not actually being turn-based most of the time unlike Fire Emblem, but Fire Emblem has a map and Final Fantasy usually didn't go beyond one or two rows. The fact FF has turns or something similar to turns is almost irrelevant.
I don't know how the entire fanbase of this genre hasn't put this together, but I feel like I am on a planet of retards.

turn based gameplay

fast forward x10

smash X

It's so fucking boring in 99% of games. FF X is the exception.

Every other actual art has this except video games

Art critiques don't elevate art. It just gives snobs some drivel to repeat when they notice other people looking at art.

Fire Emblem is an SRPG you retard.

Did you understand what I just wrote or did you reflexively just replied when you saw the words "Fire Emblem"?

i'll bitch about ATB, as determining initiative is the most flavorful spice in an rpg

To be fair, ATB quite literally will start at random points per character/enemy when handled correctly, so besides the time you spend thumbing your decisions in Active, it may as well be a silent initiative anyway.

Hot take, turnbase rpgs turned to shit once they started having stories, animation, going 3D, and a bunch of other shit to slow battles down. Classic dungeon crawler turn base battles were much much more faster because most of the time, they had zero animations and zero load times. You could get through 2-3 battles in the time it could take you to get through 1 battle from a 4-6th gen rpg. If anything zoomers should be playing more dungeon crawlers.

If anything zoomers should be playing more menu navigation games

Thanks for the recommendation, autist.

Turn based battles RPGs got better over time with the advent of 3D. FFX-2, xenosaga, Persona, E33 etc. Dont know why Square tried to meme them out for the last 2 decades.

Every fags I've come across that complains about turn-based being grindy are usually the ones who don't bother using buffs to make the game easier to get through.

ATB was ass. Only survived because it was held up by growth gimmicks. Jobs, materia, etc. IV had no gimmicks and it was incredibly dull.
FFX returned to true turn-based and it was a massive improvement. They should have stuck with that. It's not too late, they can go back.

it depends a lot on the game, some developers don't get it and do think the grind is necessary for the experience
others let you beat the game without leveling at all and regard level ups as a difficultly slider

it's not consistent enough to say, unless the person with that opinion specifies what games instead of doing broad strokes on the genre

IV had no gimmicks

it did have cast times though, so like initiative based rpgs you had stuff going on like having your group heal casting before the damage actually hits the party

Better than needing to load your menus every time you go into battle.

Yeah, that's what annoys me about people who voice how much they hate turn based games. It's not enough that they can just ignore it and play other games that cater to their interests. They actually want the whole genre gone because it's "obsolete" in their eyes and want every turn based franchise to make the shift away from it.
