it does some things well, and its arguably one of the most polished games ever made. but they also canceled factions 2 to deliver a double-campaign to teach you an incredibly simple lesson.

I don't mean Abby didn't kill him for revenge and kick off the plot, I mean, instead of it being this weird set of circumstances that perfectly line up for her, it's actually total chance. Then the player can spend most of the game building up this faux-mythology as they chase Abby down and wonder why, only to find out she killed Joel for the same reason Ellie is trying to kill her: the murder of a father. And instead of being some bizarre roided-out freak, she's a normal person like Ellie to hammer home how similar they are.

Not totally. It gives abby a purpose after her revenge is over being that that is what her whole life was about. Showing that there is a life outside of revenge and hate. Its closure for her and rounds out her character. If it went from her going from the theater straight to santa barbra, it would work, but i think itd make her character a little less robust.

In the pristine version of this scenario that's playing out inside my head, it happens during a wider situation impulsively. Abby and like two friends (instead of a whole ass group) connect with Joel and Ellie and get into situation a la TLOU1. Then just when things are going well, Abby gets some irrefutable proof Joel is THE Joel and then makes an impulsive choice to shoot him during some wider FUBAR event. It might even seem like the objectively wrong choice to prolong her survival but she just couldn't help herself, to parallel Ellie eventually going on an insane revenge quest.
Finally playing the game now on PC. (I have a PS4 and PS5 too, but it became obvious it'll come to PC right around the time I got interested in playing it, so I waited.)
I just reached the start of the Abby section, so we'll see. I've been spoiled about the plot, of course, but it's still interesting to see it play out and all the little details etc.
I'm playing on Grounded and it's pretty hard. Some of the patterns with the dog handlers feel pretty unforgiving. I mostly abandoned full stealth and see the game more like a puzzle, where to sneak, where to shoot, where to throw shit etc. Sometimes it can end up a bit cheesy, like that arena where you get the boat. Ended up stabbing most enemies while they came to check out the previous kill.
The atmosphere and enviroments are world class, really like to just walk around and see stuff.
Makes me pretty hyped for Intergalactic, desu. Yeah, the story will probably be some weird Druckie yid stuff and the main character seems designed to dab on angry chuds (=you), but the gameplay and exploration should be great. They talked about having the player be alone, so I hope there's no contact with a radio yapping at you or some shit like that.
