It's not weird when you consider that they didn't blackify Arcane, Street Fighter, Warhammer 40k, Dungeons & Dragons, Doctor Who, Evil Dead, Fallout, Hatsune Miku or Ghostbusters and the only franchise that got blackfied was LOTR, which just incidentally happens to be spreading wokeness everywhere in its other series as well.

It is a reprint and the reprints are often more loosely tied to the flavour than original cards. That being said, the art clearly shows the character using a clone/duplication/shadow jutsu type spell to attack from multiple angles and the effect is making ethereal (token) copies of something. It isn't that hard to grasp.

The intent was obvious; LotR has historically been an emblem of white culture (and often used by supremacists as a sacred cow,) so what would the setting look like if you reversed the skin colors?

One upside with WotC working with Japanese devs is that it is practically immune to this. I refused to buy any of the blacked cards, but i can basically just buy any final fantasy cards knowing it's exactly what it should be from the games. I don't think they even made any of the tokens black lol
