IDK, to me it seems nostalgic about cold things. Skating is a fun activity despite being cold. The snow matted on Asriel's nose is certainly a happy memory, they may have been sledding or had a snowball fight or just digging around. Pickles are yummy.
It is a great example of Toby's prose in any case. It wouldn't be Deltarune without so many lines dripping in pathos.

the game on asriel's computer isn't undertale (red herring), it's deltarune. kris and his friends are playing out asriel's unfinished game. all the art from the prophecy was drawn by asriel. that's why those parts in ralsei's manual look cut and pasted from something else (they were), and why the three characters don't properly match the art (it wasn't drawn to be them). ralsei in particular fits the worst because he is kris' literal self-insert from when he was a lot younger and still wore the green horn headband. the facade is going to crumble at some point when shit gets too dark to prop up the fantasy any longer.

The meta reason is obviously that humans couldn't do magic in Undertale (except in the backstory lol) so you can't use magic in Deltarune. Humans and monsters probably aren't so different in Deltarune but that's not something Toby has wanted to give away immediately. Ralsei specifically mentioning "humans" in the tutorial feels like an artifact of this.
We know Kris has an interest in magic and "occult" stuff, so you'd expect they might know spells, but Dark Worlds don't seem to operate on what you "want" as much as what you "are." Kris might want to learn magic but they're still painfully aware that they're an ordinary human.
I think it's also worth pointing out that Kris might not be able to cast "SPELLs," but their SOUL enables a lot of supernatural action that might as well be a kind of magic. Kris can empower teammates, command them from a distance, and seal (and open) the fountains. The "certain power" that allows you to SAVE and the "power" you gain from defeating enemies also seem intrinsically related to the SOUL (because it's just Determination).

So I've been learning music composition and production since I read that thing Toby posted on how to git gud at music. It's been a really fun little creative outlet to learn even if I have an insanely long road to actually making something great.
Going back to Undertale's music after learning more of music theory is funny. Ruins and Attack of the Killer Queen are very impressive compositionally. I used to think that Toby's use of leitmotif was really smart and kind of genius, now I think he might just be using it because he's a lazy hack and it's really really easy to write a lot of songs in a short period of time that way.

The usual triad of classes are rogue, warrior, and mage. Susie and Ralsei fit the latter two pretty well, but Kris is kinda in an odd spot since he doesn't exactly fit the rogue archetype, in gameplay anyway. Maybe the player gets a hold of his vessel at some point and Kris is able to become a more obvious thief styled character. I mean, they are rather sneaky if you think about it.

I argue that Happy Town is supposed to be an unfinished, botched version of the Don't Forget leitmotif
Gaster was shattered across space and time, information about him is shattered between the fun events, and so it logically follows that his theme was shattered too and the "Gaster's Theme" we hear there is a mere fragment of the full piece. Meat Factory and Happy Town sre fragments as well (that's why they sound so basic and incomplete), but whether they're of Gaster's theme or something else it's hard to say.

these sound like songs from games-within-games, sort of like what noelle plays like catpetterz and that one RPG. I was thinking about how simplistic the "Catpetterz" game we play on the website is compared to what's described and I feel like that's gonna be important somehow. That the fiction for the characters in deltarune is "Off" in some-way, incomplete. Like how Asriel has a game he's making or Noelle seems to stumble upon easter-eggs and alternate routes in real life as easily as she does in the games she plays. Even ICE-E is fucked up in a weird way, all his branding is offputting and no one but Noelle seems to realize it. All their entertainment is fake and wrong. Like an afterthough.

Combining and transforming different motifs to the extent that Toby does is as much work as composing an original song (nevermind the original elements) and the results speak for themselves. A song like ASGORE is every bit as great as its parts.

Real talk though, all of those songs (Rude Buster, Death by Glamour, ASGORE, etc) are insanely well composed. The more I look into how music actually works the more impressed I get and the worse I feel about my own abilities, of which I have none yet.
It's really, really, really hard to properly articulate just how much practice, study, and genuine creativity it takes to get to that point and compose like that, and in succession no less. It takes some people decades to get to the point where they're even able to write just one song that impressive.

Technically, all the Darkners are also soulless, so it got me thinking that maybe when you stab the ground, you're stabbing the living Earth itself and draining Determination out of it, and that's what the Fountains are made out of. “How Do I Get Good At Music?”
People constantly ask me how I learned to compose music & how to improve. Well, I pretty much just made up music on the piano and then transferred it to the computer until I was OK at it. But here's some tips:
1. Just do it.
It doesn't matter what you use: a DAW, an instrument, pen and paper, etc. Just start creating songs. Personally, I make them up on the piano then transcribe them into FL Studio. But seriously, just start doing it. Experience is the most valuable thing here. There's no trick to make something good on your first try. Just try your best, and keep making things.
2. Learn to play an instrument
Before I composed music, I learned how to play songs I liked by ear on the piano. It took me years to become proficient at it, but learning to play songs you know is an extremely valuable skill that will help you understand how common chord progressions and melodies are formed.
3. Analyze songs you like
If you can read music, analyze the aspects of songs you like that you want to improve at. Pay attention. What aspects of your favorite songs do you like the most? Is there a drum pattern you like, or a chord progression you don’t understand? You could even look at a MIDI or sheet music and try to copy it by hand. Obviously don't use something you've copied in an actual song, but it's good practice.
4. Experiment
Mess around and try new things. This is the main way to improve at anything, really.

5. Improving at production
A lot of improving at production is just experimentation, experience, using good VSTs/samples/plugins, and watching/reading tutorials. Seriously, it's just effort. Download samples and VSTs and mess around. Listen back and forth to your own song and a well-loved song in the same genre. Put some effort in learning about effects, here are the SUPER BASIC things you pretty much have to know about.
- Equalization
- Reverb/Delay/Echo
- Limiters & Compressors
When analyzing a song, what aspects of a song should you generally pay attention to? What should you consider in your own songs?
1. Melody
2. Chords
3. Rhythm & Meter
4. Instrumentation & Timbre
5. Structure
6. Production (if digital)
1. Melody - What's the melody? Countermelody? How do they relate to one another?
2. Chords - What are the chords? How do the chords sound? How are they arranged in relation to each other? How do the chords relate to the melody?
3. Rhythm - What are the prevailing rhythms in the song? How are the drums arranged? How do the melody/countermelody/bass/drum parts all relate to one another, rhythm-wise?
4. Instrumentation - What&how many instruments are used, and where? What ranges (high? low? mid?) do the instruments occupy? How do the instruments change throughout the piece?
5. Structure - What are the different "parts" of the song, and how do the above four qualities change in each of them? How does one part transition to another?
6. Production - How are effects used in each part of the song? How are the parts of the song panned (L/R)? What kind of samples are used - and HOW are they used?
With each of these, you shouldn't learn "how" but also ask yourself "why" each of these decisions were made.

As a final note, for "making up" melodies, I don't really know where it comes from. For me, it feels natural for song ideas to come to me in the shower or while I'm walking around. I don't know if this will start happening to you. But what I can say is, if you want to compose a song, physically all you have to do is place notes on a staff and tune some effects. So on that level there's nothing holding you back from doing the same thing as a great composer. It's all knowledge. And I guess how good your samples are lol
