HoMM Olden Era

Strategy games suck. I love exploring and building but as soon as you it's all about being as efficient as possible, shit gets boring.

I love HoMM series, but this "Olden Era" looks like it's been made by devs that worked on mobile F2P games through their whole career (at least when it comes to the art).

As long as the gameplay was good.

holy fuck that medusa is pure sex

you're speaking in the past tense because its already failed and dead before it even comes out?

If I buy this does it increase the odds of a Dark Messiah sequel/remake?

I'm a "fuck Ubisoft for butchering HoMM" type of guy.

Also Songs of Conquest sucks.

technically yeah, both owned by ubisoft and from the same franchise
but realistically? come on

lol I'm not paying Ubisoft a dime let alone some Russian grifters making it

This is just franchise milking.

Seeing how everyone is seemingly seething about it, I'll throw my 2 cents in.
I've been lightly following the various updates they've been posting, and frankly the game is shaping up well. It seems to be taking the solid core of HoMM3 and developing on it with some unit abilities, double upgrades and who knows what. They've also been working closely with the community, so we can expect a lot of QoL features that people have been asking for. On top of that they got Romero on the team, so you can be sure that the soundtrack will be good, too.
The artstyle is pretty much the only thing that doesn't seem great so far. I'm optimistic about the game.

On top of that they got Romero on the team, so you can be sure that the soundtrack will be good, too.

Just because he worked on older games doesn't mean he's going to be a good choice today. His style has changed and he's not interested in simpler video game music, without Rob King to rein him in he's just gonna deliver stuff that doesn't sound like HoMM you remember. HotA mod team contacted him for a track and he graciously agreed to make one for free but what he delivered was unusable as a town music, it was completely off the mark in terms of style.

I pirated the leaked build, the game didn't really impress me.

What can you tell me about the game?

was there actually a leaked build or are you bullshitting? how is the hero leveling system? what campaigns are there available? how detailed is the random map generator?

It's on rutracker at the very least.
It's made on Unity (yuck). So far there's only skirmish with a random map generator. The map generator seems to take a lot from HoMM3 templates. Art style reminds me of Diablo 3 of all things, same cartoony stylistic.

Magic all the way. Might's cool and all but nothing beats watching an entire enemy stack crumble under a perfectly timed Implosion. Plus, gobbling up all the mana wells and cheesing with Dimension Door never stops being fun.

Hero leveling seems to be heavily WiP right now because you basically get some % bonuses to stuff and 8 skill slots like in HoMM3.

As much as I love homam 5, i just can't handle another warcraft 3 looking game. I am so over that cartoon aesthetic, and will outright refuse to drop money on anything that looks that way. Ah well. I hope it's good for the bros who will play it.

Dogshit. Back to HotA

There are diablo-like item sets.

I'm pretty excited about it. Dungeon and Necropolis look cool. I like that they're adhering to the lore and instead of Inferno, they have Hive because the invasion of the Kreegan hasn't happened yet. I also like the fact that we're in Jadame, which was honestly, really cool and a nice change of pace from Enroth/Erathia. Other than that, it looks pretty HoMM 3/5, which is a good thing.

those are all skills from previous games, I think recruitment was a subskill of something in HoMM5?
I do hope there's some more creative stuff, too.
What about magic? Any cool spells?

Combats itself are actually pretty close to HoMM3 but have elements from 5. For example, some creatures have an alternative to attacking (like those troglodytes can spit shit at short range) and heroes seem to be able to just deal straight damage once in a while but the ability was never useable for me and was marked as WiP too.

Magic system is probably the most interesting thing I've seen in the game. You get your allotment of spells when you build Mages' Guild of a certain level. Some spells are already available, some are greyed-out and need to be bought for resources. You can also use a special resource to upgrade existing spells (like giving haste +3 hexes of movement instead of +2).

i hope they are fine with mediocre sale numbers because i doubt market for homm3 clone is that big

Where the FUCK are my homies Sandro and Crag Hack?

Forgot to say, there's also seems to be some kind of system in place that allows you to spend influence or whatever the fuck that resource is called to get global upgrades to your economy and army like in 4X games or wargames.

No gigachad archangels - no buy
yes, i wont buy a game if one single unit has a bad design

low iq post

It looks comfy

Forgot pic. They're called law and the "influence" or whatever its called is gained as your heroes gain xp.

I'm concerned that it's meant to release this quarter but there's still no release date, the video you linked there being a lot of graphical redos from feedback could easily have pushed it back

huh, could be interesting, but it's kinda hard to judge how well would that work without playing
btw do you know how old is the leaked version?
yeah, it's kinda weird. They've got a bit over a month left till the end of Q2, yet still no date. Could be getting delayed I suppose.

I'll definitely try it out, but i'm not 100% optimistic
Doing everything grognards ask is a trap, this is how it always goes:

Well it's exactly like HoMM 3

But it's not literally HoMM 3

So why would i play it isnstead of HoMM 3

That ui is aoo sterile and looks ripped from any number of mobile games.

The thing about magic that I think is going to make it better than 3's magic is that now the schools are called Primal, Daylight, Nightshade, and Arcane. Primal is mostly blasting spells like armageddon but also has stoneskin and anti-magic. Daylight has haste, Nightshade has slow but they also have some interesting spell variants like +1 all friendly speed -1 to all enemy speed.

No way to tell how old it really is. They might've as well leaked it on purpose

Might, both attack and defence are useful no matter how much you stack but there's only so much mana you'd realistically need and buffing spells don't scale well with spell power either.
Also half of the caster skills are useless

btw is there an initiative stat, or is the order of movement dictated by speed like in 3?

There is initiative. There's a spell that lets a creature act immediately as you cast it IIRC

Yeah the UI isn't doing the artstyle any favors. I like the artstyle, its a little too wowlike and I'm fed with it but the quality itself is good and fits the game. But then the UI makes everything look like mobile shit

Original

Bright, cartoony, fun

Remake

Dark gritty
into the trash it goes

Dark gritty

Fucking where?

blind retard

mobile shit artstyle

I'm glad i had 0 hopes for this trash.

It's the other way around. 1 and 2 were cartoony (in a good way), 3 had a more serious 3d-to-2d sprite art style, Olden Era looks like a mobile game.

The deal breaker for me is if its gonna be on the shitty ubisoft launcher.

wait, really? the steam page doesn't mention that

Which is what I'm worried about, steam doesn't say but there's a chance it will be

Looks more like HoMM 5 than 3.

Graphics look much worse than 3

mobile artstyle

Into the trash it goes

I doubt it. You might not have heard, but people within Ubisoft have actually been super cooperative with a modder for Dark Messiah, giving him access to a lot of assets and even inviting him to Montreal to help him out with the mod launcher and his new SDK for the game. It's already lead to both a Cut Content Restoration and Co-op Mod, with a few more things potentially on the way (e.g. a tile-based mapping tool copied from Alien Swarm that allows both beginner mapping and randomly generated maps). This was all a few months ago.

This means the suits aren't being overly protective nonces about Dark Messiah, and when suits aren't overly protective nonces about a game, that means no sequel or remake
