New Doom games seem like they develop based on feedback from the previous game. IE people said Doom 2016 got a little too samey around the mid point where there were no more new enemies or weapons really being introduced. So Eternal has an even larger roster of monsters that get spread out more evenly across the game.
Doom 2016 has a combo that lets you use whatever you want without ammo concerns. Eternal forces you to swap weapons more often due to smaller ammo pool in general.
Doom 2016 fast swapping weapons was something you could do for high level play. Eternal it's practically required for some enemies to deal with efficiently.
Now we have Dark Ages that could be a response to Eternal and it's platforming sections and higher pace of play. I can only wonder how hard it would be for Id to just make a Doom game that wasn't partially a result of the criticisms of the previous one.

Kind of curious actually. 2016 and Eternal were fucking huge, and while this game looks good, the hype engine doesn't seem near as big yet.
TDA did beat Eternal in peak Twitch viewers. 160k vs 140k. But maybe that's partly because the number of Twitch users has grown in the past five years. Eternal also launched on the same day as a major Animal Crossing game, but TDA has no competition.
