What ID learned is that, Eternal is unplayable for returning players. TAG was a huge wake up call for them. They created a game that required memorizing the most efficient weapon and ability combo to finish enemies so when players returned for the DLC they couldn't even clear the opening area because they forgot just shooting shit in Doom doesn't work anymore. Hence TDA. Eternal was a badly designed game that's the lesson.

because it's not Doom anymore, it is trying to be Halo, but wihout innovating anything, most of the shit you do, it's already made on other games, they just straight up stole abilities from Athena of Borderlands Pre-sequel.

They tried something new. The new direction is kind of bad.
At some point I realized you engage every enemy the exact same way. Get close, shoot until a parry window comes up, parry + melee, repeat until dead.
It also basically doesn't matter what weapon you use. You just pick your favorite and upgrade it to max and it works on everything. There are weapons that are generally better than others (rip SSG, the combat shotgun is just better) but as a rule this is true. This is a BIG overcorrection from Eternal in which the enemy roster was balanced around having weapon-specific weakpoints.
Older Doom games you needed to adjust your strategy around different enemies. Archviles you need to hide around corners. Revenant rockets follow you. Mancubus fireballs can be dodged by zigzagging through them. Circlestrafe around the Cyberdemon. Hitscanners have low HP, so use the chaingun on them. Etc.
None of that exists in TDA. There's no strategy. You just play "however you want," so long as how you want to play is engaging close up and relying on the shield.

We have 5 of the samey weapons now, slow everything down, add dance dance revolution tier parry systems, vehicle sections, 2h of story cinematics, and fire whoever made that banging soundtrack.

Doom should be a nonstop adrenaline rush of violent dismemberment and explosions, not a leisurely stroll through hell. Tight, well designed levels that make you wade through the bodies of thousands of demons you kill, with high tempo metal blasting in your ears. You should be physically exhausted after finishing a map. No neon lights for parry timings, projectiles, pickups. The brightest thing in the game should be the blood that splatters onto your visor.

It feels like extreme padding that you need to do to engage with the weapon/melee upgrades at all. At 150% gamespeed its already annoying to travel back and forth, I can't imagine for people playing at base game speed.

I don't mind the fights, I mind the upgrades being locked to these leaders. In Eternal you got to choose when you found these stations. If you wanted to max out armor, you could before anything else. You want shotgun ammo max, you could. In Dark Ages, you are forced on the progression path the devs have set. I would rather have gotten yet another currency but atleast the ability to pick my upgrade. If I am not using skull ammo, why the fuck would I care about getting max ammo increase over shotgun or more max armor?

I think its not balanced for 150% game speed but its extremely annoying for people to spawn behind you and hit you before you can react. Needs to be done better, but also fuck fodder enemies shooting homing projectiles at me non-stop. Max projectile speed, you just get hit from behind by a mini-nuke and you couldn't even tell by whom.

I actually really like the weapons. The ball and chain gun is sick and I think the shield throwing is pretty satisfying. Performance is a bit disappointing, but that's easier to fix in patches than fundamental gameplay mechanics so hopefully they will patch it up soon

They addressed the biggest complaint with Eternal's design being that player expression is very extremely limited outside of their "fun zone", TDA decouples most of its resource management from glory kills and has way more synergies and alt modes for its arsenal that don't railroad you into specific optimal picks (Shotgun GL for Caco's for example).
It's less simon says in how the player approaches combat and consequently a lot more fun to play.

At some point I realized you engage every enemy the exact same way. Get close, shoot until a parry window comes up, parry + melee, repeat until dead.
The problem is that they're making the games after 2016 gimmicky and forcing you to play into the gimmicks. That's why eternal and dark ages are so repetitive. When they lean into the gimmicks too much you just end up doing mostly the same thing on each level. 2016 didn't really have this problem (on nightmare) because you had to be strategic in how you approached on the levels, which meant that knowledge from the levels played a big factor and not just mechanical skill.
Why is the game so ugly? Eternal looked great.

It's a whole mechanic now, basically invulnerable mini boss fights shooting at you until you clear the area and this is what makes up most of the big open areas of the game for a reward (usually upgrades), It's so tiring have to parry dance with a Cyberdemon or any of the big melee guys every single time

It's just another Cyberdemon and that's why it sucks ass, get close, parry twice (or thrice whatever) then shoot/melee it when it's stunned until it's dead which depending on where you are in the story could take like 5 instances of parrying, AKA the main strat for a lot of enemies in this game. The fact that the Rocket Launcher has an upgrade that let's you heal yourself with splash damage so you can just use it in a parry war against a Cyberdemon blows my mind, it needs the parry to heal you so you cant use it on a regular basis it's literally just for that mechanic
Parrying on the hardest setting is so forgiving I can't imagine how early you can press it on the easier/easiest settings
The mech fights total maybe 30 min in the whole game, it's fine. Simple segments that change up the pace. I think the game doesn't need mech and dragon sections but it wasn't a big deal.

Cyberdemon is pretty braindead if you fight it up close. If you fight it from afar it rapes your shield with its machine gun, and summons spikes if you try to hide. So you're encouraged to fight it up close and just parry its melee, attack, parry its melee, attack, repeat until it dies. The other heavy demons are more varied and better designed. Cacodemon it's too gamey with its goofy ass projectile walls, but it is pretty dangerous.

Just finished on ultra-nightmare. My general complaints are that the dragon and titan levels are objective filler that are boring as shit wastes of time. The combat is a direct downgrade from Eternal and 2016. Whoever thought sprint should be a toggle and forward only should be shot along with whoever made weapon swaps take so much fucking time. The weapon balance is also atrocious. The focused skullmasher and dagger parry will literally clear the entire game just holding the buttons down. Who the fuck even needs the BFC when you have those.
Most of all though turning DOOM into parryslop and having a bad soundtrack are egregious sins that should have Todd castrate the entire dev team. Still not terrible by modern AAA fps standards, but comparing it to the indie scene or it's own previous games it's a fucking travesty.

2016 was incredible in the boring-ass landscape of shooters at the time.
Eternal felt like a game that could never have been made by a AAA studio, but it was.
Dark Ages is a step back from both because what it does feels neither fresh nor like an exciting, confident evolution from what came before. The kind of person who loves it the most is someone who genuinely just wants a brainless power fantasy, because that's what it is- it's not "stand and fight," it's "stand and block." you hold fire and parry everything, and sometimes punch for an ammo refill. That's the game.
Ultrakill's got better parrying, Eternal's got better push-forward combat, 2016 has better writing. There's just nothing here that's exciting.
But there are multiple combinations you can use for every demons. Most weapons and abilities are blanket solution for any demons. The game push your ability to use all of the tools to its limit. People hate it because they just want to turn their brain off. That's like saying a fighting game shouldn't have specific combo's and you should just mash any button to form any good combo.
i'm playing on Normal difficulty and it feels miles easier than Doom Eternal and even 2016. I've only rarely been challenged and its mostly come from large waves and spawns. I feel like maybe the game hands out too much health, armor and ammo. Even if you run low on ammo you can use your shield and melee to get more ammo. I'm not someone who usually feels the need to play on Hard difficulty but I might just for this game.

Not really, 2016 was almost the same as eternal, just more unbalanced, especially toward the end if you get specific upgrades. Eternal refined the combat base line from 2016. Eternal actually has very deep and varied combat. Great mobility and distinct weapon/mod variety mean there are many ways to approach every fight and each area encounter offer different things. Things were explored months to year later into the game like how to incorporate the microwave beam.

2016 almost has a metafiction angle to doomguy shoving the plot out of the way and it feels like id themselves just didn't appreciate what they had. I guess I can't fault them for chasing their viking metal dreams but at the end of this game when the dragon dies I just didn't fucking care and doomguy getting pissed off when it happens felt like a complete reversal from feeling totally on the same page as he was punching monitors and wrecking the argent cells and all that.

You don't really feel like a tank at all, you're still fragile and the best way to play the game is by constantly shieldbashing directly into enemies from across the map. That's the only way you get anything that feels close to Eternal's level of quick lethality.

2016 and eternal feels good because they put you in the driver seat of a power fantasy. The demons are obviously powerful, relentless, and have a lot of power throw at you. However, you as doom guy is extremely fast and can dish out firepower like a human sized gunship. You control the doom guy so he can navigate and win seemingly impossible battle. It makes the player feels satisfied and accomplished.
Doom Eternal tries to make players feel good in the passenger seat and honking the horn (i.e press button when green light) to see cool shit and feel strong.
You can't recreate the rush of playing eternal while playing dark age.

Exactly, it's the Doom 3 problem all over again—make an enemy tanky but neuter the chaos around them and suddenly it's just a slow duel instead of a frantic brawl. Doom is at its best when one wrong strafe gets you pancaked by a hell knight while a lost soul is trying to French kiss your ear. Not this turn-based chess match crap.
It's funny because in Eternal, you can actually get away with some sloppy play by just abusing the chain gun shield. Hey, it's a shield that can allow you to block and just ram into enemy to stagger lock them. You can be caught in a bad position and the shield will bail you out. However, many players feel that the gun shield is boring to use so they minimize using or not using it at all.

It did this while winking at the audience by showing Doomguy ignore exposition and instruction. Eternal got the more goofy tone of the 90s games right. It insisted on story and Doomguy no longer skips story.The Dark Ages goes a step farther and makes story part of the level so replaying some levels gets too tedious. Tone falls back to the 2016/Doom3 serious tone more, not the 90s/Eternal tone.

The weapons and setting would fit Quake 1 a lot more for sure, but not the game speed. It has a bit of Hexen in it too with the maces, the flails and caped medieval styled enemies. The weapons that use skulls as ammo feel very Painkiller-ish, but could still fit in Quake.
In terms of gameplay I'm having a great time.
In terms of overall game design, I'm in the cosmic realm and I CAN'T SEE FUCKING SHIT, which is a massive letdown considering DOOM Eternal had the best implementation of HDR I've seen.
Halo is the opposite of run and gun. Halo has very slow movement and requires precise positioning, taking cover and strategy around its limited weapon pickups. Doom is all about high octane speed, dodging and running, keeping monsters occupied with infighting and having more freedom with weapon choices.
It's also insane how fucking pretentious you are. Doom was never supposed to be anything but mindless shooting, yet here you are insisting that it should be something else.

Original doom was a sophisticated video game for its era. Doom is about chaotic shooting and violence, but the gameplay doesn't have to be plain and dull. It's also a singleplayer and not a competition multiplayer game. You can pace yourself in any difficulty and choose to delve into the depth or not.

Nah, 2016/eternal made them work well. People were very skeptical of glory kill when doom 2016 few first trailers came out. People expected doom 2016 to be a shitty failure after the DNF fiasco. Doom 2016 turned out to be a great game and Eternal continued on that basic set up.

I don't think dark age basic idea is that bad but the execution seems based on fear of overwhelming players like Eternal. You can make a parry system without the green bullshit. Vermintide has very satisfying and popular first person melee with block/parry against mobs without needing all of that glowing green attacks and slow down.
I don't really feel that. I think glory kill gives players a breather in an intense fight and there is a always a feel of relief when you glory kill those bigger enemies. Also, for eternal, you don't have to glory kill that much because you can Regen shield with fire as well, which was nice. Also, imo, glory kill also give mass appeal, while it is more optional for really good players who can get by with little glory kill to upkeep their tempo.

If that's true, then one solution would be to divide the game into episodes. Three short episodes contained within themselves are better, in my opinion, than one huge episode.
But nowadays it's a total sin to release short games.
