These two next games are a big mistake by FromSoft and everyone knows it. Yet Miyazaki has been talking about wanting to produce games like Duskbloods and Nightreign for quite some time.

As someone who has played the majority of the FromSoft catalogue up until now for 20+ years, i have zero interest in both titles. Which really should say a lot about the state of affairs for them.

The medieval aesthetic is naturally well suited to a wide variety of weapons, armor, magic and enemy creatures. Japanese aesthetic is fairly limiting in terms of serious armor and shielding, while victorian is also low on armor as well as enemies (you have werewolves and vampire sure, but it's like 80% human peasants, and they had to to come up with "quicksilver bullets" made from the player's own impure blood.

Were Armored Core 6, Bloodborne and Sekrio not enough though? I mean yeah I really like what they did with Bloodborne but can't the same criticism be leveraged on every Zelda game being medieval? Every Elder Scrolls game is medieval? Duskbloods looks to be in a more Victorian setting anyways.

Demon's Souls was largely an experiment while Dark Souls was the refined version that proved this type of game was viable. Dark Souls 2 and 3 are direct sequels to Dark Souls so they kind of HAVE to be medieval as they add onto the story of Dark Souls 1. Elden Ring feels more like High Fantasy than the Dark Fantasy of Dark Souls, but it still is medieval fantasy even with a whole new setting and mechanics thrown it. To me, Elden Ring always felt like a showcase of all the improvements they've done to the Souls' series, an ambitious project to satisfy the medieval Souls lovers before they move onto something else. Nightreign is clearly because of how popular Elden Ring and it's DLC became and is full of callbacks to other games. I do agree that after Nighreign I'd like something other than medieval fantasy hence why I don't want Dark Souls 4. Let the fire burn out and embrace the dark, unless kindling it would truly bring on a new roaring fire. I just don't want to get burned.

TES games are set in different variations of medieval, with weird outlandish shit for TES3, generic LOTR medieval for TESIV and viking medieval for TESV. Meanwhile Fromsoft's medieval all have the same aesthetic, tone and atmosphere, to the point where they can reuse assets and story beats from a decade ago and it doesn't look out of place in their current titles.
