Doom 2016 was an honest and genuine attempt to bring an older game to newer audiences. When the series became popular the leeches wormed their way in so they could corrupt it.

When people ask why The Dark Ages flopped just take a look at Eternal. People loved 2016 which is why they couldn't wait for the sequel. The sequel went full retard which is why no one gives a fuck about The Dark Ages. Me included.

It has the atmosphere you want to absorb and revisit, unlike the marvel cringe the latter 2 are.
I also would add that the work they did on UAC facilities is phenomenal. Basically a better "sci-fi lab tour" than Half Life, and the future structures you actually wish you could visit.
Plot is mere basics, it's environmental story telling makes a unique experience where it was just engrossing running around killing demons.

I so wish they just stuck to that approach, tone and aesthetic. Feels like a massive waste.

I don't know what happened, honestly. I enjoyed Eternal in the moment for the most part, even improved quite a lot on my second playthrough, but I feel like I've exhausted my need to play it.

Eternals gameplay is very very samey with no room for any type of alternate strats, the more you play the more you realize this hence repeat playthroughs are pointless

The game devs were obviously enjoyers of marvel franchise capeshit and went a little overboard with the embellishing lore and worldbuilding. Adding platforming like it's super mario didnt help either

The change from weapon swapping being a higher skill technique to pull out more dps to suddenly mandatory skill you have to do didn't help much between 2016. Which I think was fine for the most part but probably frontloaded all the enemy variety early then didn't have much else to introduce to the player later on. Or how a handful of runes completely broke the game so naturally everyone used them, infinite ammo being the obvious one. It did however allow more freedom in what you could use and how you used it.

OG Doom didn't have fast weapon swapping, in fact it's quite slow. The result of that is each weapon has a very specific role to combat and knowing which one is applicable at any time is important. Shotgun is okay for most situations, but you pull out the rocket launcher for groups of weak clumped up enemies or bigger demons. Chaingun is perfect for lost souls (before super shotgun came out) Cacodemons, and cheap chaff possessed humans. The maps could also dictate weapon choice as there are plenty of areas where pulling out splash weapons was a bad choice due to tight spaces potentially killing you as well. That's where the chainsaw comes in handy.

OG Doom had really good gameplay that people still make WADs and play it to this day.

It's a series of red-light-green-light interactions and each layer of depth is just adding another one of those to the pile (i.e flame the horde before a remote detonation rocket, quickswitch SSG and ballista on the marauder after parrying, use (x) weakness of (y) demon instantly or be overwhelmed)

Actually no, the weapons in Doom were pretty well balanced all things considered

Minigun is the designated zombie killer, good range and rate of fire, way better than the shotgun at longer ranges

Shotgun is pretty good against crowds of zombies, works well in 1v1s against imps and pinkies, and in desperate encounters against cacos

Plasma gun is good against crowds of imps, pinkies, and lost souls

Rocket launcher/BFG are amazing against heavies and crowds of weak demons

I swear, the shotgun meme has been spouted by people who only play the originals on the easiest difficulty

I like it, and i respect sgt mark for his work, i mean let's be honest he revived the doom hype for normalfags, but even on the hardest difficulty it leans too much on the power fantasy side of things and i kind of dislike the modern tacticool look, Doom is supposed to be inspired things like Evil Dead and Alien

Eternalfags strawman the fuck out of this, I replayed it lately and the Chaingun is absolutely fucking useless on plenty of enemy types, the Cyber Mancubus being one in particular.

You can 'kill' them with it, but it takes like 30+ fucking seconds and you'll probably eat shit before even killing them. You practically do need to exploit weakpoints and use certain weapons on certain matchups, I don't know how the fuck Eternalfags have disputed this for so long, it's ingrained in the game's design and Martin talked about it at length.

Only things I would've changed:

making the tone and progression between levels more grounded (Doomcave mostly relegated to just an optional bonus in the main menu), instead after one mission in you're immediately just casually visiting Agent D'Nur like it's nothing

Dark Lord not being another Doomguy, the prince in Dark Ages looks far more like how I originally imagined him; also bossfight taking normal damage with a bullet-hell emphasis instead of solely redlight-greenlight

take out the retarded cartoon daze effect, replace with a simple animation cue

DLC enemies not requiring a specific weapon attachment just to die (ESPECIALLY the green prowlers), goes against the game's strengths

Hayden having more involvement in the early game, even if it's through recorded logs, to better illustrate how Earth got fucked

Everything else was solid and fun. Didn't ever care for either's multiplayer so I haven't many feelings towards how Invasions should've been implemented, the idea sounds nice but it's easy to see how the balance would be mishandled. Honestly better than that or the basic arena replacement they chose would've been a full-on Beast Mode from Gears of War but PvP where you fight waves that include player-controlled demons.

Would a classic style Doom game work nowadays? Like if they literally just grabbed the originals and added AAA graphics (and maybe changed the maps a bit to accommodate jumping so the young skibidis don't think it's TOO archaic)

if you mod out alot of the gimmicks in eternal you still have a pretty good doom game somewhere

mod out glory kills and punch/bloodpunch just rag dolls demons for health on the last hit

make the chainsaw a weapon to replace the removed pistol as the default weapon still drops ammo on kill without the gloykill animation

remove dash

but now the maps don't play nice so you need new maps that dont use dash

with the idstudio you could make an actual doom game but you would be making it from scratch
