And then I tried playing it and realized it has almost no gameplay. Why do developers do this? How am I supposed to stay engaged with this? Bah
I thought this looked really cool
VOLCANO
The idea of Legend of Dragoon transcends the reality of Legend of Dragoon.
I had a half nigger friend growing up that was fucking obsessed with this game.
SPINNING CANE
HARPOON
GUST OF WIND DANCE
Everyone that was based was obsessed with this game.
MORE & MORE
COOL BOOGIE
Welcome to JRPGs
SUMMON FOUR GODS
I was 14 when I played this game and I broke a lamp and my television when trying to imitate one of the additions from the game. Always a reminder to myself that I was a stupid retard.
He was
PURSOOT
all the recent threads got me replaying it
i'm already on disc 2
I think its fun.
tfw you like the whole bad guy turning good trope so you use Kongol but hes just so fucking ass compared to anyone else
I feel bad for this based half-black brother with an asshole like you for a "friend".
legend of dragoon was such a good game
BLAZING DYNAMO
friend of mine used to joke about Kongol putting everyone in his pockets when they’d do that thing from FFVII where they’d all disappear/reappear into each other during a dialogue-heavy cutscene
Shit used to crack me up.
I used Kongol cause his additions were easy and I didn't understand how powerful the speed stat was in LoD.
If it wasn't for the game's shitty low inventory size, attack items would overshadow additions by far. You almost never want to use your dragoon form outside of disc 1.
MADNESS
HEROOOOO
We had a thread on Anon Babble talking about the pros and cons of this game, and the biggest con is trying to make a party of Dart, Albert and Kongol. Albert and Kongol are both slow, so they'll get barraged by enemy attacks before you can act even once. Kongol has huge HP but his magic defense is ass, and since most enemies by the end use magic...
Kongol is ass but Albert is still pretty good for most of the game. If you stick with him he'll have his final addition by mid disc 2.
Due to how bosses give out 90% of the experience in the game, if you want to invest in lategame powerhouses like Haschel and Meru you have to drag their ass though disc 2 or they'll be several levels behinds by the time the likes of Rose or Albert begin to fall off.
trying to make a party of Dart, Albert and Kongol
That was my team when I first played this game.
I had a good time and didn't understand what was considered so bad about that team at all when I first heard someone talk shit on them.
Albert is decent enough, but Kongol is awful trash. Any other character is objectively miles better than him.
PSX was truly a haven for 7/10 JRPGs with fun gimmicks
FLURRY OF STIX
You can make Kongol work if you give him Bandit's Boots and Bandit's Ring. At that point he'll be as fast as Meru.
Good luck fixing his shit Magic Defense without dumping 10k gold though. At least his additions can't be countered.
You almost never want to use your dragoon form outside of disc 1.
It's bad enough that Additions/Multi Items outclassed Dragoons, but there are a non-insignificant amount of bosses that actually punish you for using it; Grand Jewel, Divine Dragon, Lloyd, and a couple others.
No, Lenus does not "power up" in any way when you transform. There is nothing in the code that would do any such thing. This hoax started because of the fucky nature of the Speed stat in this game, and Lenus is the fastest boss you have fought up to this point.
MORE AND MORE
I just remembered Rose has a move that is a very obvious reference to menstruation, which was censored in the NA release.
As long as you don't also put Kongol in the party, Albert is a solid character. Just don't make all three characters slow. IIRC, the most accepted final teams are Dart, Haschel and Meru or Dart, Haschel and Miranda.
Every battle takes 3 times as long because they're slow. And they're not even going to die, because they all have good or great HP. It's just that every battle will open with the enemies doing piss-poor damage and you just looking in awe. The audacity!
I believe some of the RPGs from that era, like LoD, Legaia and FFIX suffer from having "too much presentation" and not enough content. All those three games love to show you the battle arena, panning the camera around, showing the enemies and so on. 10 seconds before the battle even starts.
I'm not saying it's bad, because back then we had the time to waste and we didn't care. But looking at it now, I'm pretty sure you can slash at least 1/4 of the playtime by skipping those intros and fluff animations. In Legaia you basically have to watch your character beat the enemy into a bloody paste because their combo is not over yet, even if the enemy already took enough damage to die 15 times.
Dart is actually kind of just mediocre overall despite being the MC
They're fine as a party, it's the first one I used to beat the game. Kongol needs speed equipment but it's not a problem. Albert is amazing.
He's the jack of all, master of none. Considering he's forced into your party for 98% of the game, I'd be more annoyed if he wasn't like this.
By the end you realize character usefulness has more to do with a combination of speed and good skills instead of just dealing raw damage. Even Albert has a party-wide defensive buff. Dart has... bigger fireball?
Not just LoD, but I think most JRPGs have something of the sort, a "final party" that most people will gravitate to. The iconic Tidus/Wakka/Rikku team in FFX being an example.
Outside of HP, Rose is better than Dart is nearly everyway.
Dart has low mults on his additions until disc 3. Rose has 500% damage with Demon's Dance on disc 2.
Better magic stat and dragoon form
Better weapons (Rose has the best weapon in the game)
I played the PC recomp that included a mod that lets you swap Dart out in combat. There's some glitches during cutscenes that happen after boss fights but it doesn't crash the game.
Dart isn't even all that good in terms of raw damage. Albert/Rose have a better early game since they get their final additions early and Meru/Haschel beat him at the end. Shana/Miranda/Meru get to abuse item magic and he's the 3rd slowest party member.
His one claim to fame is that segment in Disk 2 where you fight so many water enemies that you can just bulldoze them to death with Final Burst + Special.
In fact, if you had the option to bench him, Dart would probably down there with Kongol for the party member that you'd never use unless you had to.
Censored
It was? Now I wonder how the og looks like because I do remember her shitting out some black substance.
In Legaia you basically have to watch your character beat the enemy into a bloody paste because their combo is not over yet, even if the enemy already took enough damage to die 15 times.
The enemies tend to have so much HP that you have to do like 3 full combos to kill one, and you spend a lot time waiting for enemies to do their slow combos, whereas yours have a much faster pace.
Rather than just selecting a command or timing some hits, you also have to adjust and reinput your combos a lot, which takes up a ton of time too.
It was red in the original. A few droplets of blood fall on the ground, then she starts to spasm and the "demon's gate" divides her right in the middle, starting from her vagina... it couldn't be more suggestive.
youtube.com
It's pretty obvious it's her period blood.
Kino
My tier list is Meru>Haschel>Miranda>Albert>Rose>Dart>Kongol.
If you value attack items, swap Miranda and Haschel.
Haschel is good because he's min/max. Good attack and speed. Magic is his worst stat but he has zero use for his dragoon form (Thunder has no weakness to exploit) and his final weapon makes him the strongest character if you keep his health at least half.
Meru is the best character with the highest speed, highest damaging addition, high magic to chuck items almost as well as Miranda and high enough magic defense in a game where magic is very dangerous.
This game’s story really did live up to the hype that went behind it, IMO. It takes a while for it to really come together, but all things considered it does a pretty awesome job of keeping the audience motivated in seeing it through to the end. I replayed it a few years ago and was really blown away by how well it held up.
There's nothing to really debate with that tier list since its pretty accurate.
I wish there was a sidequest that doubled the inventory limit to 64 later on. 32 is annoyingly tight since it hampers the archers who have to pick between most of their damage or general purpose healing/buffs.
They need to remake this game or a prequel based on the Dragon Campaign. It has the most lore and world building than any game I have ever played. Feels like playing through 1000s of years of history. Too bad Sony is full of fucking jews
Whip SMACK
or a prequel based on the Dragon Campaign
I don't understand why people keep asking for this. We basically experienced the entirety of the Dragon Campaign through all the flashbacks. It's a depressing story where everybody besides Rose (and technically Zieg) die, and almost the entire story of the game is a direct result of the events of that war. We really don't need a retelling of it. It's like playing Final Fantasy 8 and wanting an entire prequel game focused on Laguna. It just doesn't make sense.
If we do get a sequel (hopefully not because modern Sony is trash), it should be thousands of years in the future where most, if not all, of the old guard is gone (but not forgotten), but the Dragoon Spirits reunite to battle against fate once again (as Rose said, the Dragoon spirits are fated to gather together when the world needs them).
haschel's abilities were fuckin' ass.
pulling them off felt random to me
I've been saying for years that game is crap.
I rented it when it first came out, even back then, i was an anime and JRPG obsessed 20 year old nerd and even I instantly recognised it as a horribly generic game that was desperate to ape FF7 but took WAY too long in development.
I mean It was competing against games like paper mario, vagrant story, skies of arcadia and grandia 2 for god's sake - it cannot compete with its contemporaries in any way.
That game is a lot better than Legend of Dragoon.
at least you weren't a smart retard.
if you're gonna be a retard may as well go all the way and be a stupid retard.
It's a JRPG.
The worst offender for that is Koudelka.
It takes literally an hour just to advance a handful of screens in that game coz the combat is unimaginably slow.
wtf lol
based devs.
i'm gonna call my period hell's gate from now on
I wish there was a sidequest that doubled the inventory limit to 64 later on.
The Japanese-only Pocketstation did exactly that, actually.
The cg cutscenes blew my fucking mind back then. I was going around showing this game to anyone I could find and we couldn't believe how good it looked.
Kids these days have no perspective, they are born into a world where tech has already peaked. I feel bad that they don't get to experience the feeling of seeing tech grow by leaps and bounds.
Too bad the voice acting gets progressively worse the further into the game you go. I know that was par for the course for Japanese video games at the time, I just find it hilarious how you can notice the voice work degrading from Disc 1's passable to Disc 4's hilariously bad.
Tech has peaked, but so has talent. Gayming is in the equivalent state of South Africa; first world technology left in the hands of subliterates and their champions.
It peaks at the very end of the game, though.
DIVINE DRAGON CANNON
WAAAAAAAAGH
What the fuck does your retard ass consider gameplay?
Nah Rose is the worst character because she isn't good at anything. But she's also the best because of aesthetics, and like most jrpgs it's so easy that you can use whoever you want.
That scream Shana makes during the climatic cinematic still gets me.
What is with the recent hate against this game? I've seen many posts shitting on it
The world design expressed through the pre-rendered backgrounds is godlike. Not better than Squaresoft, but on par with them which is saying a lot because no one else doing pre-renders was making epic narrative experiences that encompass original worlds and histories. It has a good story too, not convoluted, no asspulls, genuine emotion between the characters.
The worse thing about it is probably no overworld.
There IS an overworld. It's just on rails. Which consequently turns Disc 2 into Barrens Simulator.
be 10
friend comes over as I'm playing through the last part of disc 1
he really likes the game
tells me he has a similar game and thinks it's bad and asks if I want to trade with him
go to his house to see what game it is
it's ff7
decline his offer
honestly I probably would have loved either of them to death at that age but I'm glad I chose LoD
I've still never played ff7
I've tried playing FF7 on multiple occasions. The first few hours are great, but I always get bored right after leaving Midgar.
I didn't even comprehend the scope of these games when I was 10. It just didn't click for me until a new friend showed me Legend of Legaia when I was 12.
and realized it has almost no gameplay
What a bizarre complaint for a JRPG. It's choosing actions with your D-pad. What did you expect?
Oh true, it's more detailed than I remembered. Must have gotten it mixed up with Breath of Fire 4 or something with a traversible map.
Yeah every character has a purpose except Kongol. It becomes even more obvious if you play the Hard Mode mod.
Lavitz/Albert is similar statted to Kongol but has the best support spell in the game, Rose Storm.
Rose is OP early even if she kind of falls off later on.
Shana/Miranda is fast and strong with attack items even if her lack of additions is a turnoff for some.
Meru is THE most OP character in the cast for the simple fact that she's stupidly fast. Like she literally gets twice as many turns as slower characters like Albert. She also does theoretically the most damage in the game, between her great magic early and Perky Step hitting the hardest in the entire game later if you wanna meme with her.
Haschel is also fast and strong, and less squishy than Meru if you don't like her exploding when Rose Storm isn't up.
Kongol is just Albert without Rose Storm, which I have zero idea why you'd want that.
What a bizarre complaint for a JRPG. It's choosing actions with your D-pad. What did you expect?
for there to be more options and strategizing instead of selecting basic attack 95% of the time
but that doesn't change gameplay in any way. you're still just picking from a list of commands.
Just equip speed items. What else are you going to use the accessory slot for?
You don't even understand why Shana is good. She gets more dragoon exp. from her attacks than other characters, which makes her godlike in the early game because she can get her dragon summon before Lavitz dies and it's the best one in the game because it full heals your party in addition to being a nuke. You fucking noob, just shut the fuck up.
my friend had legend of dragoon and loved it. he let me borrow it and it sucked
i had grandia and let him borrow it. never saw it again
what kind of protagonist name is Dart
It was probably me.
go to gift shop
they only have Dort vanity plates
Ywnbaw
Grinding for dragoon exp that hard is kind of cheesy, like what was the point of the Hard Mode mod if I was going to just grind for Shana's level 5 Dragoon like a faggot.
Playing at normal pace Lavitz/Albert and Meru is my best party. I like pairing Shana/Miranda with Haschel since they don't need Rose Storm to survive as much as Meru does.
Just equip speed items.
Meru can wear a Dancer's Ring too. And unlike slower characters she can get away with not wearing one for a specific fight where status effects or whatever are an issue.
Youre actually still right, but probably dont even realize how right you are, because if not for my experience with arguing against the people who will disagree with you, and wasting 100 hours of my life on JRPGs. Id think your response was stupid. But youve likely just brute forced your way to being right.
Id think your response was stupid
Why would you assume that? It's perfectly logical. Adding more shit to a basic framework doesn't change the framework itself. You've just added more shit to it.
I feel Rose is underrated. Yeah she drops off as the game goes on, but she's still a solid character. Like a slightly less impressive Meru across the board but she holds up and works well in any party setup. Shame she doesnt get her best weapon right until the very end.
What i mean is that very declarative simplistic responses that simply reaffirm what they already said prior in response to somebody disagreeing always look stupid. Even though youre actually right. It makes it seem like you have your head in the clouds when you dont acknowledge and disprove somebodys disagreement but just repeat what you think.
