I think you're right actually. It's a flawed game but it tries. It's memorable, fun, full of all kinds of interesting ideas, cool set pieces and a surprisingly detailed world. I think it could have genuinely been a masterpiece if they went over it again and did things better. It definitely felt like a response to New Vegas.

In Fallout 4 I can nearly hit level 100 just by passively exploring the map and doing a handful of settlement quests, and the perk trees are shallow enough for you to reach everything you need. In Skyrim the rate at which you level plummets after like 35, then it's no more perk points unless you're deliberately grinding legendaries. Also the trees eat your levels up with shitty 50% damage modifiers or cost reductions untl you're locked into a build.
The "you can master everything" meme for Skyrim is literally not true, it's WAY easier to do that in any other TES game or even Fallout

Fallout 4 is a game I've come around on as a modding platform, but not as a core experience by itself. I just don't think the central thesis of the game, being the main plot and the loop you take through the world to get there, is good and it never will be. That's pretty objective, I think. All the factions suck, the majority of the quests suck, and as a whole it just doesn't amount to much.

I think when you load it out with mods to pack it out with things to collect and find, and stuff that really makes building a semi-worthwhile endeavor (like SS2), then you have something that can actually provide that somewhat solid "sandbox exploring" type game.

I will say though, I don't mesh with any of the super-hardcore-survival type mods. I know there are collections and stuff designed to make it like hardcore survival system, die-in-one-hit, pitch-black-darkness, possibly even survival-horror-ish gameplay, but then once you actually make it through some of those super difficult fights with basic raiders and ghouls and had to manage hunger and thirst and pee bars while walking, you get to a location...and it's a Fallout 4 NPC with Fallout 4 dialogue and quests.

Part of me kind of wishes Fallout 76 was like, just an expansion to Fallout 4 in the way Tamriel Rebuilt was for Morrowind, because the one thing that FO4 suffers from as a modding platform is limited space to work with. There's only so many random buildings you can stuff new things into before you're tripping over a location every two feet (which it kind of is to begin with). I think with more space, more themed areas with more content to design around, you'd have a lot more freedom for modders to make crazy shit.

And also, FO4's hardcoded problem that can't be escaped is that the engine is, despite being slightly more stable than Skyrim and such, still shit, and if you are even marginally interested in the building aspect you run into that very hard. I would have enjoyed if the engine could actually support the building system that it gave you because there really is a lot of potential content there for building big, automated settlements that craft their own shit, trade with each other, and expand, but the game just literally cannot handle you working even within the limits it sets for you.

TTW has been updated recently and its imo the best way to enjoy Fallout 3. As a Fallout 1/2/NV enjoyer, F3 lacked a lot of mechanics that are tweaked and balanced in the way FNV has done things.
Not only that but you can also customize your experience and have a much better time roleplaying and playing Fallout 3 than in the base game.
I add the farm mods in all my games with TTW on just so I can have an answer to what the people in the wasteland in eat. I disable fast travel with immersive and better way to travel through caravans and dedicated drivers through some mods, put a TTW inspired JSawyer mod and I have a mostly vanilla lite experience that feels like a proper RPG.
However, no matter the amount of mods will fix the writing in some parts so what I do right now is that I mostly RP as a guy who work with the Outcast and scavenge for tech, kill and try to steal from others valuable tech for my faction.

Not really, in both cases even if your objectives are to prepare for the final quests that climatic, the journey you do from point A to B vastly influence the outcome of how the climax will play out.
If you leveled up a certain way and stick to your character sheet and plan some path is open, others are locked.
In Fallout 4, no matter how you build your character or what choice you do. The climatic quest that is supposed to solve the Boston crisis feels like an after thought.
You can literally work for all factions at the same time and only decide which faction to support in the last moment. There is no consequences or new things that can happen if you decide to support one faction over another.
As a matter of fact, if you played a single playthrough of Fallout 4, you would have experienced most of what the game had to offer.
Compare that to Fallout 1, 2 or NV that literally bars you from quests, NPCs or content if you happen to prefer a faction or to help another in a certain way. It encourages the player to replay the game and have fun again, and its simply not the case for Fallout 4.

Fallout 4 is the most modded of the 2 fallouts because it's frankly the fallout that feels the most sand box and the base game just leaves a lot of things to be desired so people mod the game into whatever they want it to be and it works surprisingly well.
After watching the spiffingbrit's zombie apocalypse run, I made my own and now turned the game into a Last of Us/Resident Evil survival game and where the entire game is populated by feral ghouls and stuff. Shit is fucking fun as hell. I would never ask another fallout to be like 4 but what 4 does is something no other game besides skyrim does for the fantasy genre and that fits a niche many people like, despite its many many flaws as a game.

No, helping tribals in an abandonned Airforce base drastically change the outcome of the battle in your favor.
Having factions joining your side in the final battles drastically change the outcome in your favor.
Having your character build a certain way will help you to have another path that doesnt necessarly need more violence and can tip the odds in your favor.

Fallout 4 has non of that. The BoS will still have Liberty Prime in the end, the Railroad will still invade the Institute even if you are caught, the Institute will still launch their attacks. The Minutemen are still the failsafe that can wipe all the other faction.
Literally the only consequences in Fallout 4 is the color of the flag in Diamond City after the "slide show".

Also, my fallout 4 is like 3 different games by now.
I constantly switch between 3 modlists/collections, between desertpunk, modern warfare milsim, and this zombie survivor run. If only the game didn't crash so often, I could probably play this shit for another decade.

FNV rewards you by the end of the game by having a cool sequence, an easier time fighting and more NPCs from other factions assisting you in battle.

Sadly had to remove it from another collection too because even getting near some of the spawned creatures could cause CTDs. Sad because I liked that it populated the world with a bunch of new animals and the game, unlike skyrim, doesn't really like it when you force scripts that add a bunch of different new creatures.

I unironically prefer a "You defeat the bad guys" RPG over a "Muh factions" one if the factions are boring and/or if their ideological conflict is uninteresting, which is why I prefer 3's story to 4's.

The Legionaries are fitted with AMR, 12.7mm SMGs, Carabine and Marksman rifle as well as Thermal Lance and Hunting Shotty, during the battle of Hoover Dam. They will kill NCR soldiers but struggle against the Rangers but will overpower them through sheer numbers and equipement which is a deliberate design from the game. Your actions where you have a better party and people helping you in the battle makes things easier.

Now, tell me what Fallout 4 does that constitutes as a consequence in the "climatic" quest to solve the Boston knot? Because it does barely any effort to do so.

This. I picked up the base game from the recent fanatical bundle for $3, but the season pass is way overpriced. I’m not *that* eager to play Fallout 4.

Nta but as much as I love playing 4, the ending and probably the story as a whole is probably the most whatever in any "RPG" that I've played. It's barely as consequential as your average RTS game, which is to say, it's just set dressing for the big explosions and fights you're doing along the way.

A lot of bethesda fans like the little NPC stories and quests. fallout 4 had very few of those.

Keep in mind Bethesda has been shooting for building up a fanbase of the lowest common denominator for quite some time, so you arent going to get a lot of very insightful replies, people love the "feel" of skyrim but they cant explain why (its the artstyle / music (especially music that creates a unique atmosphere)). Fallout 4 lacked that atmosphere, and lacked the NPCs, so it doesnt matter that it did everything else better than skyrim, it didnt feel good to them so its bad.

Thanks anon. Turns out a bunch of mods I've been using have been depreciated or obsolete for a decade. Only kept using them because they were what I've been using all this time.

Automatron is unironically my favorite bethesda dlc.It's fairly early on, it's short and concise, robots are fun to fight and the robot customizer mechanic is really neat. I just wish there was a lot more options so you can have your own AC mech.
