why is this so popular? it's pretty basic in every aspect

very late oughts to early 2010s were a little miserable for shooters. no big indie scene yet and AAA was thoroughly huffing call of duty's fumes. a run and gun shooter with a plot about rejecting the plot in favor of killing demons and animation cancels and cool shit like that hit like the coolest thing on the planet at the time.

it's weird today that you have people that laud 2016 for being a brainless game when the entire appeal of it at the time was that it was a pure gameplay shooter that had slightly more going on than corridor shooting

Trying to do more with eternal is what got the dlc and that was honestly not that fun imo, the mechanic bloat really set in and it wasn't as fun as the base game

TAG2 actually simplified the game a bit by giving you the axe instead of the sword.

Doom 2 is my fav game and I play doom 2 wads at least couple hours a week, and eternal is great

Thank fuck I tried Dark Ages and I didn't buy it. Gayme Pass is not amazing but I can't imagine paying 80 bucks for that.

I played doom1+2,quake1+2 and doom2016 in a very small span of time, the thing about 2016 is its simplicity while still being very much a evolved Doom Id game,where as with eternal pretty much throws the underlying DNA out the fucking window with its shitty long levels of just walking or parkouring to arenas or bosses,shit weapons and heavy resource management.

I'm talking about TAG2 specifically. TAG1 was the hardest section doom gameplay ever. They toned it down for TAG2 and give you an extremely powerful and simple tool in form of the axe to make it easier

Yea, if you attempt to swap in 2016, you just break the game, especially after mid way through.
Fast recharge upgraded plasma AOE stun mod > upgraded SSG > ballista and even the big demons don't get to do anything.

Eternal is why people don't care about dark ages. They played eternal expecting 2016 but more, they got a worse game that killed their interest in a sequel.

Correct, however there have been doom games that didn't provide what doom fans wanted. Eternal is a great game, just not what I wanted out of Doom.
