I feel this game came about from a misunderstanding of what people wanted out of nu-Doom.
Eternal felt like they had somewhat of an understanding of what people wanted and expected out of a Doom 2016 sequel, just that they went a bit too far in certain aspects and some of it didn't work. It coming out right at the start of the lockdowns, the Animal Crossing x Doom memes and good word of mouth about 2016 helped Eternal immensely in the sales department.
In an Xbox Direct presentation, I remember they mentioned the theme for the gameplay in Dark Ages was to "Stand and fight" as opposed to "Run and gun" and "Jump and shoot" of 2016 and Eternal. It's clear they designed a lot of the game around having a shield which might have seemed like a good idea at the time, but it just leads to less interesting gameplay as opposed to just going around and shooting shit while avoiding attacks. I feel the decision to slow the game down and focus on blocking/parrying certain colored attacks made the game seem a bit boring and slow compared to the previous 2.
Doom Eternal felt like it went too far in taking what worked in Doom 2016 and amped it up in terms of the gameplay/combat at times. The Dark Ages feels like Id heard the criticism some had about Eternal and overcorrected and made a game that is far too slow and less interesting as opposed to something at the pace of Doom 2016.
It also seems that the developers wanted the game to be "epic" and "badass" but failed to realize that Doom 2016 and to an extent Eternal were already that, not because of setpieces and cutscenes, but from the gameplay itself. Doomguy doesn't need to do "epic" and "badass" stuff in cutscenes, you the player should be doing "epic" and "badass" stuff in the gameplay.

I actually like Doom TDA. On my third nightmare run, with modified game speed and parry window. Getting bored, but 2.5 consecutive runs is a good sign.
I do kind of want the game to fail because Id needs to be punished for forcing ray tracing. That single-handedly ruined the experience for 95% of players. All for some Nvidia shekels.
I still had a week of game pass left so I gave this game a shot. I forced myself to finish the first 10 chapters to see if it got better. It doesn't.
The parrying feels novel for a little bit, it reminded me of Cuphead in first-person. But the constant slow-mo ruins it.
The levels are too vast and the gameplay ends up feeling like a chore. It's like each objective is an invisible checklist. 0/4 portals destroyed. 0/40 demons killed. Be a good little slayer and kill all the mobs so the boss loses his invulnerability. It all feels like Diablo 4 or some shit, it's slop game design.
The kaiju and dragon segments are also braindead garbage. The game just doesn't have anything remarkable about it, there's no reason to play it.

I don't even dislike 2016, but you can tell the devs weren't fully confident in several different aspects of the game and its relation to the IP's roots (look up their initial intention of having the soundtrack being purely digital-sounding because the lead devs thought the metal sound would be considered "too cheesy"), instead only shoving in more classic Doom-esque stuff around the end of development. The final result is more of a happy accident than anything. This especially applies to the presentation, a lot of which is made up of carry-overs from the cancelled Doom 4 project. Hell, the plot itself kept being heavily revised until within a year from release
Makes sense Eternal and Dark Ages ended up skewing in different directions after the fact. Funnily, Eternal is where the devs actually tried to make a "Doom, but today" from the get-go, but even that mindset ended up changing at some point after the game's reveal. Pic related was even intended to be the game's main look for Doomguy before they fell back on using an altered praetor suit, and I believe is even present in the teaser cinematic.

Those are all roleplaying games, which are already high in the replayability factor. They also take a long time to complete, and some of those games have a big modding community.
They'll do a campaign dlc that ties Dark Ages into 2016, and after that I honestly wouldn't be too shocked if they got a B-team to remaster 2016 as an "anniversary" thing, giving the main id devs time to create a new IP (which they've clearly been wanting to do since Eternal).
After that, nuDoom can sleep for a while as Machine Games demonstrates their attempt at whatever their Quake project is supposed to be.

After Dark Ages' somewhat tepid response I wouldn't be so sure. It feels like they tried to bet on the whole "people want to see more of Doom's cyber-knights! lots more!" angle, which didn't really work out. With that in mind, it's not hard to imagine the devs shuffling their initial plans and using the planned dlc to relatively close the book on all this night sentinel stuff, with any future nuDoom games focusing more on traditional Doom-like settings or even more cosmic-themed junk (which people seemed to resonate with more in comparison).

Eternal triples down on being a sequel while quoting the comic directly for the memes, suddenly gets super indulgent on the Night Sentinels like they're the coolest thing ever and Doomguy's bestest buds for the ones that didn't turn traitor, the background lore is super important to shit making sense like this is 343 Halo writing, you get some sci-fi base and city stuff but half the game is Hell and fantasy planets of Sentinel hold-outs
Dark Ages decides clearly people want more of Doomguy's Sentinel buddies, and while there's still bits of sci-fi, it's like almost entirely fantasy and eldritch stuff and abandons the franchise aesthetic entirely in favor of being up its own ass about the Sentinel homeworld, Cosmic Realm, and being basically Warhammer-lite, both original and 40K
It feels like the more they "find a vision" after 2016 was a fluke, the more it stops being Doom and starts being an original IP with Doom stapled on top.

They want to make large environments that are more easily lit with a real-time global illumination, combined with tons of destructible shit everywhere that can make sure the map doesn't need pre-made chunks for lighting changes and so forth. The engine is functionally forcing the equivalent of The Finals' light rendering or UE5's Lumen GI at all times, for a game that frankly doesn't actually do any big shit to justify its necessity.

Here's the other side of the factor: there's no real replayability the same way Eternal or Halo 3 had. Eternal encouraged an arcade-like grind where different strats could have different outcomes, and enemies weren't so predictable as to always run at the player all the time but did do shit like flank, fly back for suppressive fire and other stuff. Its AI and their combat structure ironically brings to mind elements of F.E.A.R. combined with things like the Master Levels post-launch that added more challenge and content mostly for free. Every time you play Halo 3 on the other hand, between enemy AI, vehicles, and certain elements of fight dynamism, you basically have to know the game inside and out and be ready to trick kills for Youtube clout to be able to create a consistency between playthroughs. Shit gets out of hand real fast if you let the AI gain an inch to take a mile on Heroic/Legendary. All of this, plus multiplayer; Eternal's was dogshit but people have co-op mods now, while Halo 3 helped stem console online gaming as a de-facto audience for the industry forevermore.
The Dark Ages isn't just like a 10-14 hour campaign, it's a meandering one with large levels most people actually seem to fucking hate for how empty and pace-breaking they are, and the enemies are often more akin to walls and turrets than they are the dynamic enemies of Eternal. Things drag out so much that they kinda feel like a slog of a marathon, and there's not much cool variety since the game is so focused on bullet hell parries that it can't really afford the same batshit antics of even 2016 to a degree. Combine this with no multiplayer, no extra content, no neat unlockables and so forth, like no secret levels or Master Levels or ANYTHING of note, and it's not much wonder people kinda go "eh don't think I'd play this one again." Never mind secondhand impressions.
I think the worst part about it is how mediocre and forgettable it is. no matter what you think of eternal and 2016, both had extremely iconic scenes and sparked discussion and memes whether you liked them or not. so far I’ve seen fuck-all from dark ages

This YouTuber says it's because there is no real physical copy of the game because if you buy the physical version, it's going to be like EA's Command and Conquer ultimate collection edition where the box just has a bunch of numbers that you have to enter into the website to download the full game. Optimizing games for turd worlders using 8 year old gpus has never been a concern for AAA games and doesn't affect sales considering games that run like shit even on good hardware still manage to be successful on pc.
I seriously wonder what the development of this game was like, because Eternal they had the anecdote where they, at least on a mechanical level, DID just make 2016-2. Tons of new weapons and powers for doomguy with no limitations.
And they absolutely hated playing it. Playing a push-forward combat shooter where there's no pushback and you just blow through everything mindlessly is not fun, and outside of the parry mechanic that feels like what this game is. The rest of the game just feels kneecapped. Were they confident at all in this game, or were they just throwing shit at the wall trying to "win back" loud casuals after Eternal scared a few off?
It's nice to dream that but there is no way it'll flop no matter how much it costs or how badly it runs. Monster Hunter Wilds is an ugly and overpriced game that was clearly shown to run as shitty as it looked and it still broke sales records for Capcom. People seem to just blindly buy shit if it's hyped up enough.
There's literally nothing left to do but essentially do a Halo Reach, where you see the Night Sentinels get stranded in Hell, and get picked off one-by-one, and then Doom Slayer's rampage in Hell until he's sealed away. There's not a whole lot to cover between '16 and Eternal. The Slayer got out of Hell, and got to the Fortress of Doom. With Eternal, he's destroyed "Heaven", killed God/Satan, sealed off Hell forever, and ensured that demons can never leave Hell again. I could be wrong, but I think they even solved the energy crisis following the destruction of the Argent facility on Mars.
I just want to see a DLC bridging The Dark Ages and '16, and I'm fine calling it a trilogy with that.

Why does Eternal get such hate? They changed some things yes, But thats usally what you do or they should have just remade 2016 Doom. The setting where fucking great in Eternal. Sounds like purity fuck only say it was shit.

I don't know. I pre-ordered Eternal from Wal-Mart before it released. I got my game in the mail just as the pandemic was ramping up. Open up my game and see a cardboard disc with a code on it.
At that time I was still stuck with 3Mb DSL. It took over 2 weeks to download. Tried to return it before I redeemed it. Couldn't. I never did play it.
This is genuinely going to be the end of new singleplayer AAA games.
Even legacy series being risky without anything really wrong with them (that an exec can point to anyway) means that new singleplayer games just aren't worth it.

The funny thing is their homeworld burns and the Wraiths inside them got turned into fuel for Hell, so either she fucked off to some other dimension like the good Sentinels and just didn't show up for the finale in Eternal, or they introduced her and made her a living macguffin woman and then she'll fucking die. They pigeonholed the most two retarded options possible for this.
