I'll always hate the piñata aesthetic of Eternal, with all of that rainbow colored shit over the screen, including the UI and the interactables. 2016 had a much more grounded visual direction

I enjoyed this one enough to play it once on Ultra-Violence but haven't felt the need to replay it since. Solid 6/10 FPS game, I think.
I bounced real hard off of Eternal for one reason or another. I didn't like the resource management mechanics or the comparatively story-heavy presentation. I'm willing to give it another shot eventually since I already own it, though.

Wrong. Eternal plays completely differently. There's a reason the promo for Dark Ages emphasised "Run and Gun, Jump and Shoot, Stand and Fight" as the difference between all the games.

Not to mention 2016 is a more refined game in the smaller details. The animations and visual coherence is better, the story and setting is better, the lore is better because it doesn't jump the fucking shark and shit on what came before like Eternal did, the music is arguably better, the attention to detail is better, the easter eggs are better, it has a great level creator, it has a far superior multiplayer, etc. I love Doom Eternal but it's just not as enriching of an experience outside of the core gameplay and music.
What is the verdict on DDA? Looks fucking awesome yet have heard it is mid. Not a fan of the small enemy variety, dragon sections look ass, but Ahzrak is everything the Dark Lord should have been.

Doom 2016 is a straight up shooter.
Doom Eternal is a fps/slasher with spastic combos (autistic switching of weapons for top dps)

The core is the run and gun, yes, but you will get shit on quickly in Eternal if you try and stick to that. Not to mention the entire loop means you can't just Super Shotgun everything to death the moment you get it. Weak points, stagger windows, the revised falter system, quick swapping tech (accidental as it was), having 3 super weapons, the huge demon roster, enemy buff mechanics....this kind of shit through me for a loop my first playthrough because I really was expecting 2016 with extra sprinkles, which Eternal really is not.

Floating guns and RGB autism visuals were just pathetic, yeah. The unapologetic edge was still good though, it's when you get shit like that scientist log about the Slayer in the ARC Complex level and the tryhard voice acting that it gets cringe. Or the flashback where he has an aneurysm and mumbles that line from the doom comic, or any time you come across a moment/line specifically made to be used in the promotional material.

In that anon's defense, you do fight everything in Eternal the same exact way. It's why the DLCs introduced enemies with counters in lesser-used weapons.

im replaying this right now (just defeated the cyberdemon), i dont like the fact that you cant go above ultraviolence as difficulty for the first time playing (because the game is piss easy) and the ammo pool is still limited, albeit not as much as eternal.
I heavely dislike the upgrade system, same as eternal, I'd have very much preferred a more limited gun selection with less mods or no mods at all. Weapon mods make the game piss easy, especially if upgraded. The 2nd plasma weapon (cant even remember the name, thats how forgettable it is) while being nice, feels like it's stealing the BFG's role. I don't like that I can't cycle the shotgun slot to select the SSG.
Glory deaths completely kill the flow, I've rushed the rune that makes glory kills faster. It's a pointless addition.

For the first half of the game, the encounters/arenas are a snoozefest. I don't like the fact that you need to kill ALL enemies to trigger the next wave, it kills the flow.
