bros?

when you wake up in portal 2 the voice says you've been asleep for 99999999999999 and so on
It could be glitched or just actually counting the days.
In any case it HAS been a long time given how:

the place is completely overtaken by vegetation.

The earth from space is blue and nice full of water.

the skies at the end are clear.

Raccoons and Deers are mentioned in portal 2 and the co-op mode.

Which can only means that enough time has passed for the effects of the combine invasion to have wore off. (like 50.000 years)

Writer said he imaged 50,000 years but they didn't worry about it much. Just enough time to entirely disconnect it from Half-Life.

It's headcanon that sticks for some reason. If Portal 2 really took place 50,000 years after the first game, the potato display Chell encountered would've been long wilted and gone by then. At most, the time skip happened in the span of 20 years or something.

At the risk of being called a zoomer, should I play Half Life?

Apparently GLaDOS herself says 50.000 years in an unused line
I wanted to confirm but the portal wiki isn't loading and all I have is a gamefags' comment from 13 years ago so idk if it's true

Of course! It's a fun game and goes for pretty cheap(literally a few cents) at like EVERY steam sale
It's nothing like portal but it's still a good time

Yes it's the best fashion series ever made. Valve won't wrap it up because they spend all their time and effort making shitty skins to fleece the Counter Strike mongrels and doing the backstroke through their dragon's vault of money.

HL2 is great, and playing it in VR was just *chef kiss*

Meant fps series not fashion series, what the hell is wrong with me.

5000 years tops
Paper can last that long and still be readable (apparently)

Freeman do be rocking that suit, tho.

We both said some things that you're going to regret

The state of decay in Aperture doesn't really match with anything close to 50,000 years. Maybe 200 to 500 years at most. That would give enough time for the city above to get levelled, cleared, and repurposed for farming.

Pretty sure when Portal 2 was announced by valve it was said it would take place thousands of years in the future. Which was said to explain why Aperture was shown to be completely overgrown in all the promotional screenshots.

I remember being totally on board with this depressing idea of Chell waking up after humanity was long gone. But valve must have gotten cold feet over committing to an actual time frame and wanted to keep their options open so they intentionally left it ambiguous how long Chell had actually be asleep for in the actual game.

wanted to keep their options open so they intentionally left it ambiguous how long Chell had actually be asleep for in the actual game.

Erik Wolpaw outright said this in an interview once. If it doesn't help the game in any way to be specific, it's always better to be vague in order to keep options open for hte future.

I think the wheath field is property of aperture.
It's implied that that specific field powers the light bridges and I think it's fair to assume GLaDOS re-alocated her chamber after what wheatley did so the aperture parking lot/forest could still be there but just some miles away

In the documentary one of the devs said 50k years. Though it's probably just a rough idea rather than a canon timeline.

The Wheat Field

is a metaphor for the fields of Elysium (the afterlife).
Chell is shot to death at the moment of picrelated and the choir segment is metaphorical accompaniment as she ascends to heaven.
Why do you think her destroyed (friend/cube) is there?

It hasn't aged well. If you are a student of gaming it is absolutely worth the time because you will see how much valve innovated, but if you are just a casual it will feel clunky, dated, and weird.

Its long but 50000 years? Dr Stone taught me that it would be degraded beyond recognition after like 3000.

The unmaintained lower level being able to last 500, much less 50000 years is unrealistic. Not to mention the potatoes from the bring-your-kids-to-work-day are still there.

HL3 will have an obligatory level where Gordon is teleported to Aperture via Borealis

I'd play it ngl.

is a metaphor for the fields of Elysium (the afterlife).

I always felt something like this because of how fake the skybox felt

download (6).jpg - 637x358, 49.92K

well shit, I played the Quest port of HL1 but I didn't know about this

Nah GLaDOS mentions in the co-op that the only human she alive human she had for testing is running around aimlessly miles away from the facility implying she did free Chell
Also I see her giving the cube back as a "there, nothing left for you to come after. go."

Test chamber 19 is nonsense

'''paper'''

to compare that to modern day shit is egregious.
It's far higher quality and significantly more durable.
And likely crafted from animal hide rather than wood/tree pulp.

doesn't feel fake at all unless you're playing in some crappy gmod map.
I'm generally against the idea that chell is still in aperture because co-op exists
And I'm against the idea of GLaDOS killing her because she doesn't have any reason to
also GLaDOS knows Chell is gonna die out there anyways so she is also sort of a "careful what you wish for" sort of thing where Chell is now free but GLaDOS still won because she will outlive her anyways

freedom.png - 1365x767, 1.29M

it's aperture paper made out all of those things that you just said.
Because it's aperture and they would do something like that me thinks

Okay thank God when I saw that first image I thought I was going crazy because that is NOT how I remembered Portal 2 looking

wtf im going crazy, I must be missing something important

file.jpg - 1920x1080, 211.91K

dude that one always gets me stuck
I wish I could help but I simply don't remember this chamber's solution. :(

doesn't feel fake at all unless you're playing in some crappy gmod map

Rewatch the ending when Chell turns her head to look out from the shack. The horizon looks 50 feet away and you can see the corner of the sky

not really. not at all.
But even if it did I'd say that's some animation oversight and nothing more
I mean in portal 1 the tree texture cuts... would that mean that the ending for portal 1 is fake and that the trees are actually made of cardboard to fool an unconscious Chell into thinking she is free?

OK I SOLVED IT
Turns out I was just being retarded with the faith plate, place a portal above it, then one on the ground and you get momentum

I played portal 2 on console back in 2012, and recently got portal 2 on pc and breezed through the campaign like it was nothing
but the workshop maps were something else, I would literally stop to think for 5 minutes before making my next move, and some of them I had to find a video for the solution for some of those maps

Good job, anon. You deserve a cake!

I mean, at the end of the day it's a video game, it literally is just a skybox

I wish my chambers were complex like that.
Mine would always be complete task X to get object for task Y to get object to open the door
just a lot of running around.

some workshop maps are retardedly difficult

uh Bsisters?

file.jpg - 1920x1080, 197.85K

lasers
light has no mass, therefore no momentum

Portals can move sideways and up/down, no fordward, they dissapear if they platform moves forward/backwards.

so, earth permanently got rid of the combine? looks like the world is fine at the end of portal 2. they got agriculture, birds and blue skies.

Perhaps, maybe they got their water back but every human other then Chell is dead.

Where did people even get the name Chell from?

that's her name

It's never stated anywhere

who cultivate the wheat fields then?

It's Aperture Super Wheat that naturally chokes out weeds, and any other vegetation. So the fields just reseed themselves, spread, and look pristine without needing human care.

if we want to apply the durability of anything contemporary/PC/mechanized made by man even say 50 years from now at MOST it would last a couple centuries. I doubt it's more than 500 years if we're going to assume the materials used we know about today; gold, titanium, steel, aluminum, etc.

looks like earth lost then. I wonder if half life 3 is going to follow epistle 3 story.

Must be those pesky Bfags spreading such lies

Why did they even try to set this game in the same universe as half-life in the first place?

Why the hell did the team think this hoop was going to be the biggest meme?

for the lulz.
did you not play the first game? The original premise for it was "people like cake."

try to

No try they just did.
Why wouldn't they?
Are you dimwitted or something?

Stupid replies

I mean that doesn't mean there aren't humans out there somewhere.
all that matters is that combine is gone and earth is healed.

They wanted glados to be combine related but then they scrapped that and just started doing their own thing while still wanting the game to connect with their other popular game because it's fun to tie things like that and i think it works

it's such a reddit-tier theory lol. i'm glad i'm not the only one annoyed by it

there's no fucking way it takes place more than like 30 years after the first game. i hate faggot game theorists who try to make things more complex/surreal than they already are

how haven't you already played Half-Life? what the fuck

also, i usually hate remakes (and Black Mesa is no different) but honestly if you haven't already played HL1 there's a good chance your young ass is going to dislike it and think it aged badly. so play Black Mesa instead. it's fine enough

Half-Life 2 (and by extension, Episode 2) is the star of the show anyway

maybe HL1 will. HL2 is timeless. the popularity of games like GMod, TF2, and Counter-Strike prove that

No, answer the question nigger. Why should they have set it in its own universe?

Yes

youtube.com/watch?v=ao1qVi5Qp3Y

rewrote the game

all the comments jerking the guy off

no one says "hey retard rewriting the game makes all findings invalid"

I thought it was retarded too. It's very clear that the counter was just glitched. It takes a special kind of special to conclude that means several millennia has passed.

222 years. take it or leave it

nah that was just glados trolling her one last time

this.
there's also the fact that you see the fat turret all over the game.
I like to think she(the turret) was always planning on singing an opera to chell independent if she was dead or alive.
I also love everything ties up perfectly. the fat turret appears in the hardlight bridge level and the hardlight bridge also sings Cara Mia also the light from the bridge comes directly from the field from the end of the game after Chell hears the fat turret sing Cara Mia.
It's neat.

damn i thought it was prerendered

LITERALLY IMPOSSIBLE WTF

file.jpg - 1920x1080, 464.09K

i beat the game blind as a 10 year old youll get it eventually

Is this about that vtuber who didn't even have time to process the level before her chat started bombarding her with a ridiculous amounnt of backseating. Her entire playthrough was like that if I remember correctly, I kinda feel bad for her.

her

Yeah I'll accept a couple hundred years, absolute tops.

no it actually was a biological woman behind the avatar, project melody or someshit

Yes, play it and HL2 and form your own opinions on them. Ignore the fucking retard that told you to play Black Mesa instead

The cum room...

file.jpg - 1920x1080, 387.29K

everyone saying HL1 aged like shit and HL2 is timeless

Don't listen to these retards, play the first Half Life. It is unironically he perfect first person shooter. Just enough environmental story telling to keep you engaged, and the AI is really fucking good even by todays standards. With that said I think HL2 is kinda fucking boring in comparison. Granted I played 1k hours of gmod before ever thinking about actually playing it.
