JRPGs are video games first and foremost. WRPGs are just failed attempts to recreate the tabletop experience in a computer game, which is impossible. Then you have weird hybrids where they try and make WRPGs play like actual video games by shoehorning in TPS or FPS elements, but they're never as fun as actual TPS or FPS games (Mass Effect, Fallout 3/NV, etc.)

7th gen became a weird punching bag but I never joined in on it. I was too busy playing games. Even now I hold it in incredibly high esteem. The quantity and quality output was insane. We got 4 Dead Space games in 1 gen. Look how popular GTA V still is. I think Skyrim and Dark Souls was shit but people seem to like em and those are 7th gen games as well.

Xbox 360 has a bunch of weird and wacky JRPGs. Blue Dragon is one of my favourites even though the writing gets to be a little retarded.

no checkpoints so must restart from beginning if you die or step one toe out of line

gunplay is absolute garbage. With controller, cursor moves very fast vertically/horizontally, but at any angle at all it moves very slow, which leads to very janky aiming. There is a regular zoom-in when free aiming, but lock-on inexplicably zooms the camera in way more, but yet is completely worthless since enemies just stay behind cover. Even when an enemy is right on top of you, half the time, the lock-on will twist you to an enemy fifty feet away instead of the enemy right on top of you. Free aiming and just popping headshots completely trivializes the combat.

movement feels extremely slow and clunky

every car from sports car to an armored truck drives like a damn barge, and yet will flip on a dime to even something like a cyclist

have to restock health and buy armor between every mission by the halfway point because every mission becomes a massive gunfight

frequently enemies you are chasing will have plot armor where you are meant to just go on some scripted bullshit chase before you can actually kill them, and there is no way to tell they have plot armor besides just shooting them a ton and they never die.

That's the best way to put it. 7th gen gaming was on the whole very good but it did cause problems down the line like normalizing DLCs as opposed to expansion packs, making online updates for games a thing and so on. It's more of a case of "having it good but planting the seeds of one's own destruction" rather than it being serviceable but underwhelming or just outright bad like gens 8 and 9 were/are.

It certainly wasn't as good as the 6th or 5th gen of gaming, but anyone that says it's outright terrible is either retarded, lying or a zoomer. It was the last time there was any real graphics upgrade form the previous generation and the amount of cool technology (typically revolving around physics engines or better AI) that would get implemented was staggering. Not to mention the expansion and proliferation of multiplayer gaming over the Internet. Sure, that started with the X-band on the SNES and Genesis, but by this point, it had become a mature technology and frankly it was fun to game with someone on the other side of the country or even the world.

GTAV is far better than GTAIV in nearly every way.

significantly more content (guns, cars, missions, etc.)

way more focus on planes, helis, and boats

open ended multi set-up heists. Compare Casino Heists, Apartment Heists, or even the singleplayer Heists in GTAV to something as rudimentary and barebones as Three Leaf Clover

way less scripted bullshit chase sequences (enemies with plot armor)

police actually pose a threat

miles better gunplay and controls

way better UI and layout

better graphics and animations

better art-style (not ugly gray and brown everywhere)

way better performance (doesn't hitch constantly and can run uncapped instead of <60fps)

first-person perspective (unironically pretty big change)

much less annoying health system (don't have to constantly stock up on armor and eat a fucking hotdog between every mission)

NPC AI is not stupid as fuck, doesn't rush in and die, and doesn't block your shots like in GTA IV

it's an objective fact that ballooning costs going from ps2 > ps3 ruined gaming
