Triss must have known this would happen, so it’s likely that in the universe, such trials were once conducted on girls as well. Moreover, none of the secondary characters are surprised when Ciri introduces herself as a Witcher, which says a lot about society, as they aren’t surprised by her gender in the profession.

IMO it’s simply underexplained, and the fact that she went through the trials isn’t in conflict with the lore.

Those games weren't sequels to one of the biggest hits of the last decade or made by a studio recently hailed as the new kings of engoodening by the media and mainstream.

In addition it's simply also about the expectations. The Witcher series always had a male protagonist. So people who bought the series, played the series, have been experiencing and enjoying immersing themselves into a world as a male protagonist. Hell, in Witcher 1 they were fucking everything that moved and collecting sex cards. It was great.

A female protagonist in that very same RPG series is a sudden curve ball and will change the experience you were expecting drastically. You won't be dicking down wenches for one. You'll be engaging in lesbian sex or get dicked down.

Either way, it's pretty obvious CDPR went woke so they can go fuck themselves anyway. If they want their Witcher series to become a female oriented series then go for it. Seems to work out for Disney and their shows.

Let me explain what's really going on. Games used to be produced by young engineers who tend to be apolitical and somewhat edgy/juvenile in their tastes. Furthermore it was a very niche industry so there weren't as many producers/execs to interfere with the creative process to calibrate for mass appeal. Two things happened that changes that dynamic:
1) FAANG started showering young engineers with cash which made them too expensive for game companies to hire
2) As the industry/technology advanced, demand shifted towards more story-oriented games that resembled the drama people saw in TV and movies.
As a result, the workforce shifted from young engineers to artists and writers with the remaining engineers being old careerists collecting paychecks and not rocking the boat.

Artists/writers are very progressive and have been since forever. It's hard to explain why this is but I would reason that conservatives are most comfortable with the familiar/status quo whereas the process of creating fiction requires someone willing to imagine and open themselves up to alternative realities. That open-mindedness extends towards questioning social and cultural norms. Which is the real point of friction. Fallout and Deus Ex are "political" but that's obviously not what conservative critics mean. They really mean "challenge cultural norms" or even "too racially diverse/gay" but they can't say that because normies still positively associate that phrasing with the Civil Rights movement. So they just said "political" because everyone agrees politics is preachy and insufferable and won't question you when you complain about it.
