Why are symmetrical pads not popular?
Why are symmetrical pads not popular?
people don't know how to hold them properly
if you gorilla grip the handles it's naturally going to feel uncomfortable
well I’m a high test male. I don’t grip anything like a little girl.
Why is your thread not popular?
Because the vast majority modern games use the control stick as its primary input for movement, so placing it at the same height as the face buttons makes more sense for symmetry and to avoid lengthy periods of unnatural thumb placement.
posting the shooped version
Exactly.
The playstation controller was literally designed to not have your left thumb in that awkward bent position, because it was just a ripoff of the SNES controller. The thumbsticks were only added latter at an awkward unusable location because Sony panicked at the release of Super Mario 64 which overnight made thumbsticks mandatory controller features and had to rush out something with thumbsticks. The dpad is where it is on the SNES controller (and thus Playstation controller) because that is the natural neutral resting point of the thumb when the dpad is the primary input. But in 3D games the primary input is now the stick. And since 3d is the primary way to play games, Nintendo, Microsoft, and every third party outfit smartly put the joystick where the primary input would go. Sony however fucked themselves over with the PS2, because when they didn't change the controller design, they locked in their stupid jerry-rigged design as part of their "brand image" and now can't change it even if they want to.
.... These are identical, right?
Outdated. Modern games use the left tstick, not the d pad. This is the "retro" layout
gamesaar
Lol
Gamesaar is the OG company
Gamesir is a Chinese knockoff brand
you have no idea how hard they almost fucked up with their thumbstick placement
kek, this makes the N64 controller seem fucking ergonomic.
N64 controller is ergonomic
They gave themselves an impossible set of requirements. They wanted to add thumbsticks yet simultaneously refused to change or modify the original controller layout in any way. This meant they could only find room for the sticks by sticking them on these little tumors growing off the original controller whether like in your pick or on the final DualShock design. Had they just allowed themselves to redesign the controller around the thumbsticks everyone would have been better off.
The thumbstick cock makes you misalign your hands which can induce carpal tunnel.
I honestly kind of hate the Playstation controller, but they're the only ones that have a good dpad in the right place. PS5 dpad is especially nice with its gel-like texture. It feels like the Vita dpad, which is perfect. Trouble is, the sticks are in the wrong place and using them feels awful.
Nintendo have forgotten what a dpad is, and the Xbox one is in the wrong spot.
How do we fix this?
They refused to change or modify the original controller layout in any way.
This wasn't an arbitrary decision for no reason though.
The main reason they didn't want to move away from the original layout was cause the PS2 was designed to be retrocompatible with 99% of the PS1 games, and since the vast majority of PS1 games was designed around the D-Pad, they needed the controller to be usable in the same way the PS1 controller was.
The unforseen consequence of this was that, due to the controller remaining basically identical, many ps2 games(although not as many as PS1 games, obviously) were still designed around the use of the D-pad, which in turn moved the issue down to the PS3 which was originally designe to also play both PS1 and PS2 games.
So while it has undoubtedly backfired now, at the time it wasn't so unreasonable to NOT change the design.
That said, once they moved onto PS4 and essentially abandoned backward compatibility(lets not kid ourselves, "classics" are only there cause people adamantly wanted some form of backwards compatibility, not cause sony wanted it) they should have changed their design, but by now their controller shape and layout became part of their brand, so again they "couldn't" change it without reinventing themselves, which is something they obviously wouldn't risk.
i almost think it was because they outsourced the manufacturing of the controller to several different companies and wanted to use as much of the existing tooling as possible to save on costs. not entirely sure, though
People complain about GC dpad.
Platform is full of 3d games that barely use it.
The fuck are you taking about?
gamecube also had a lot of ports of old games. the zelda collector's edition, the megaman anniversary collection, the sonic collections and the animal crossing NES games stand out in particular. using the dpad with those was awful and it was a lot of people's first experiences with those games. the nintendo 64 also doesn't get enough shit for it's bad dpad, but only a handful of games used it as well.
Because symmetrical with two face groups each is a meme and the only reason Sony adopted it is because they modified their SNES controller derivative and wanted to one-up Nintendo's single analog stick.
Either the right analog stick is better off being replaced with a touchpad, or the controller should have three face groups like the Steam Deck.
The analog stick is really only good for character movement and is pretty useless at moving the camera around, which is what most games use it for and which has resulted in the rampant oversimplification of modern games.
You grip things with the reflexive actions of a literal baby.
backwards compatibility
The dual analog was a PS1 controller.
Just like with the Wii, people sucked at designing control schemes for it, some games used the Dpad.
Ah its west coast hours so its opposites time for threads.
We're talking about the PS2 controller, we're talking about the original PS1 dualshock. The PS1 DualShock had no such backward compatibility issue, in fact they had to rerelease games as "DualShock editions" anyway to make them compatible, and they had no idea the PS2 would be a backwards compatible system that far back. Stuff like the Saturn 3D pad already showed that it was easy to keep the dpad on for when you absolutely needed it.
Cause and effect
Here's your controller bro
what the fuck is this abomination
I remember this thing, it's meant for disability patients so they can slap it around to any configuration that's comfortable
Imagine this going up your arse.
last time i held a playstation controller, it felt like it was meant for people with baby hands. my hands aren't massive by any means, but they still encompassed the entire controller and it felt awkward. i had to hold it with only my fingertips, which was gay as fuck
and then the control stick placements, god it's like yoga
Because the dpad isn't used very much in most games nowadays. Except for fighting games, I guess.
because a lot of people grew up with the 360 and it shaped their views on games and gamepads
they actually made the original controller (SCPH-1010) around 10% larger for the american and european markets (SCPH-1080)
Need Astroglide to play Astrobot
Because the vast majority of people on the planet are sub 115IQ.
Looks like a normal mh sesh
Because the vast majority modern games use the control stick as its primary input for movement, so placing it at the same height as the face buttons makes more sense for symmetry and to avoid lengthy periods of unnatural thumb placement.
This presupposes that you're playing a game that doesn't also have you constantly manage a camera or directional attacks like an FPS or twin-stick shooter, the latter of which especially feels like absolute ass to play on asymmetric controllers.
i always thought games like halo and CoD felt fine on the asymmetric xbox layout, but those games are far better suited to keyboard+mouse, anyway.
Jesus Christ, maybe I am a poorfag.
I have not tried this stance, but it looks like it would lead to pain and disability after some time.
Because it's retarded. Your left thumb goes on the stick and your right thumb goes on the buttons. Having to constantly stretch your thumb for movement is retarded.
lurkmoar dumbass newfag
That grip is sub 50 IQ since that pinky finger placement is very awkward. The finger should be at rest and not touching the controller.
I feel like what most people would want out a modular controller is already offered by that Victrix one. There just needs to be more variety and cheaper options.
