Different design philosophies entirely. There are build type turned based games and piloting type turned based games. Pic related is turn based combat where carefully piloting your decisions matters. E33 is in the genre of zero thought turn based games where you construct a build and then just execute it brainlessly at runtime. SMT is also the brainless build type of turn based game. Action elements complement build type turn based games better because at least it turns the brainless phase of combat into an engaged activity.

It's one of the things I appreciate the most about it. It hides information from the player, but in a way that allows for making various inferences and connections with other lines of dialogue. It also makes replays very rewarding, you keep finding new details that you didn't recognise the first time through.

It has a great visual style, a terrific soundtrack, a good story, and tons of post game. It's NG+ isn't complete trash. It's a grandscale RPG complete with an actual fucking worldmap you can travel on but with actual shit to do on it which is a rarity. It's one of the best RPGs I've played in over two decades. Which is really just a reflection of the state of the genre when the closest game released to it came out nearly two fucking decades ago.

One of the main complaints people have with turn-based games is that the strategy phase is fun, but watching the animations play out afterwards is just dull. E33 fixes it by giving you the ability to input commands during both your turn (which was fun as fuck in Vagrant Story and Valkyrie Profile) and the enemy turn (which was only done in the Mario RPGs, which I didn't play as I'm not a tendie).

Rebirth>E33>Metaphor. Metaphor is padded as fuck with reused dungeon layouts and there's not even an overworld to explore. Rebirth is padded too but the content that it's padded with is unique outside of the Ubisoft towers but at least you get to explore new areas while doing that. I'd probably put Rebirth at a 9, E33 as an 8.5, and Metaphor as an 8. None of them are bad games, I enjoyed them all.

It has like 15 different minigames and each region has a unique traversal gimmicks for the chocobos. Rebirth manages to stay fresh for most of the run time because it keeps introducing new things. As opposed to Metaphor which kept reusing dungeon layouts near the end for the side content.
All the minigames, the OG FF7 already had a lot of minigames but Rebirth really kicked it into overdrive. It feels like playing a Yakuza game in that regard, where there's just tons of varied side content.

There are many many boss fights in Cold Steel you can no damage.
You no damage those games by pre-fight prep. You no hit E33 by actions taken within the fights.

Yeah, the problem with E33 is that after the first act, the adventure dies and it becomes a character drama between a bunch of characters that become more important than the original main party(outside of Maelle). The first act is really good when there's still a lot of mystery and the villains are scarier because they try to make them more sympathetic. .

I think it does dumb down the game because it encourages throwing everything into attack stats and pictos but at the same time, I do like the idea that you can explore the entire world and stats don't matter if you can dodge everything properly. Levels just speed up how long you need to play perfectly for and I think that could work well for a more open RPG.

Dodge is the shitter's parry. Still avoid the damage but outside of the once/turn Dodger picto it doesn't generate any extra AP so you can't go as aggressive as quickly, and you aren't getting the counterattack damage either, so over-relying on Dodge makes fights take longer than they need to.

Namely Vengeance and even Metaphor. That said, I don't particularly rate Metaphor due to its bloat and mediocre storytelling, E33 easily has it beat in those regards.

Parry is already better than Dodge outside of the timing window which usually isn't too hard to figure out after a few tries. It gets you bonus AP on every successful Parry(where dodge will only generate one a turn with a specific picto equipped), and successful parries make you counterattack for extra damage to shorten fights. You're already heavily rewarded for using Parry over Dodge, there's no reason to nerf it.
