Why are DMC1 and DMC4 so hated?
Why are DMC1 and DMC4 so hated?
This is a poll from reddit btw, go back
Why
FAGGOT
All of us crosspost here, retard. Even us oldfags regularly browse reddit and resetera. Browsing only Anon Babble is like being a fucking console warrior retard.
35 niggas really like DMC2 that much or were they just memeing?
1 is respected as a classic but it’s unpolished and lacking in content.
4 is just boring and unfinished.
le unfinished
Why do so many people regurgitate this? DMC4 has some of the most content and best fights. Its BP is still the best
5
best
Fucking reddit.
4 is unfinished and only liked by giga ultra autists who play it like Donguri
1 is old
best fights
It has Credo and literally nothing else of merit
1 is the only good game in the series. The fact that Itsuno trannies hate it is very telling about their lack of taste.
one decent boss
he’s the only boss you don’t fight three times
Why do so many people regurgitate this?
Because it's running up a hill, reaching the top and the game going "Ok, now hear me out, walk *down* the hill! Double your content!"
DMC1 is unpolished because..................like..........uhh..........no one modded in style switching yet...........
Go back
These are games meant to be replayed dozens of times though
lacking in content
In what sense? It's a complete game, quite a few levels and boss fights. If you're talking about Bloody Palace or whatever, I think that's entirely superfluous.
Name five things DMC1 does better than 3 or 5
Tourists only played 5 because it's the newest one. If they played it at all, and don't just know it from memes.
I LIKE games where you revisit/backtrack through old areas and DMC4 still felt like a huge copout in that regard
DMC5 bad
We are reaching new heights of contrarianism
Why do we hate it?
DMC4, the peak of DMC . . .
better than 5
Art direction
Story
Overall atmosphere
Doesn't have V
Trish doesn't look like a man
i dont get why dmc1 is so hated anyway. yeah that games scope is smaller than the others but it executes that scope perfectly with zero flaws. doesn't that count for something.
no mention of gameplay
lmao
Dante isn't hooting & hollering and jumping off tables. /Our God/ Reuben doesn't VA him. Also I can't get my goon sesh going with Lary.
I accept your concession
it's one guy
no one hates 1, sequels except 2 are just an upgrade
99% of the DMC fanbase weren't alive when 1 released so they can appreciate or stand the game's monumental contributions to 3D action games. When the HD Collection came out even more retards played it, beat it one time on Normal, then shelved it while thinking they know enough about the game to have an opinion. They all just wanted to get to "the good one". 5 is nothing but recency bias. Genuinely as someone who has played DMC all my life since day one I don't interact or participate in anything related to the series fanbase anymore. The overwhelming majority are newfag niggers who aren't even good at the game. On the flip side I find the NG fanbase refreshing even though there's a dedicated schozo poster here. In the NG fanbase if you aren't good at the hame no one gives a single fuck what you have to say about the games. It's the old style elitism that only occurs when the fanbase collectively want to get better at the game instead of the Fairweather casual fanbase DMC had fostered because they saw I AM LE STORM THAT IS LE APPROACHING XD on TikTok.
i dont get why so much of the fanbase is aesthetics-first type people either. like the aesthetics of the franchise are good, sure, but the aesthetics of a franchise like pokemon are also good. i'm not playing pokemon because the gameplay is poor though. gameplay is king.
2 is more of an upgrade to 1 than 3 is
/thread
A lot of people really hate the fixed camera. I've only played 1-3 a few years ago but have seen people complaining about the camera and how fucking awful it is, so I expected some sort of horrible clusterfuck. But at its worst, I just found it to be slightly annoying.
I mean, the game isn't my favorite, and I would probably rank it as the second worst in the series, but it's like going from a 9/10 to a 7/10.
Cute opinions. Did watching Gamemaker's toolkit Vanquish videos on YouTube make you feel big brained.
Even us oldfags

I don't hate it but in reflection it doesn't hold a candle to 3.
I still like 1 the best, but it is admittly a little bit rough in parts
And I haven't played much of 5 yet
i dont like british people.
admittly
how the fuck
I like all of them equally.
us
You don't speak for me you piece of shit. Die.
5babs never played any entry btw
2 is more of an upgrade to 1 than 3 is
There's no swordmaster style so I can't do my single 3hit air combo. The game is so dated. Ugh.
Enemies have more attacks with greater variety.
There are secret ways to beat bosses, and prior fights with a boss affect the health/difficulty of future fights.
Zero bloat, every move has a distinct purpose.
File system expands on lore and makes you feel like an actual devil hunter instead of an invincible style god.
Kino enemy designs with Mundus having one of the best final form reveals in vidya.
DMC4 is my favorite
I've been wanting to play the whole series but have been getting filtered by 1 so hard it's unreal. Especially for a game where positing and directional input are so important it just isn't that fun. Fighting enemies while being at the edge of the screen is a personal hell for me
I also don't really enjoy how hard DMC1 apes it's vibe and aesthetic from Resident Evil
Ok but fuck those water levels with the first person view. No clue what they were smoking with those. And Mundus is a cancer fight I can't lie
weird, I thought everyone agreed DMC2 was the worst
I think DMC3 is the best.
just because he said resetera which was something that existed in like 2018/2019 I would say he is an oldfag from like 2020 because he believes resetera is an old fag place. It is also possible that he is a child that is an old fag from 2022... or a tourist, old fag from 2025.
DMC1 despite basically creating a genre it aged like milk and 4 also aged like milk and on top of it is a short game where you play the same areas twice. Only DMC3 aged well and DMC5 is simply by far the best and only ruined by having Vee playable. Those additional stages could have been for Dante or Nero.
i mean, i didn't play 1 as my first game. i played 3 first and then went back to 1 and did not particularly have much issue with directionals wrt camera position and such. even if im far from the camera i can generally intuit stuff, idk, it's a skill you have to learn i suppose.
right i dont love the underwater section but that's like 5 minutes of a 4 hour game. i also unironically think mundus' fight is good, both phases. if i had to pick a least favorite boss it would be nightmare.
I unironically enjoy DMC2 as a comedy game. It's hilarious how fucked the tone is, how deadpan Dante is for no reason, how broken the guns are, how bad the bosses are, it's fun to blast through and laugh at how bad it all is. I feel like people these days can't appreciate a good bad game anymore.
It was literally built on Resident Evil tech. The original DMC was basically an accident that stemmed from someone fucking up a variable on a test build of Onimusha, which was basically Resident Evil 2 with swords and demons instead of guns and zombies, right down to the identical tank style controls.
Why are DMC1 and DMC4 so hated?
Because they are true DMC games.
Nobody hates these games, they're way better than the average slop, it's just their sequels are better DMC2 and DmC
You can go back too.
Found the 5hitter.
4 is my favorite
what's a donguri
why dmc1 is so hated anyway
Retaliation. They got tired of being wrong yet again. So desperately they updoot the 'correct' opinion to fix the narrative. Won't work here.
This.
fuck off, newfag
they are the weak link, and they shall not be taken seriously.
also, it's reddit
DMC1 is genuinely bad. It was cool and interesting at the time but it aged terribly. Between the jank and the undeveloped combat and the god-awful space harrier and ending sections it's just not worth playing.
DMC4 is a good game that's unfinished and lacks the cutscene appeal of 3/5. People also just didn't like playing as Nero in 4.
they aren't, they're just not as good as 3 or 5. I quite like 1 despite shit like the underwater segments, and 4 mechanically is very solid despite it's lackluster levels. Only two games are outright hated, and that's DMC2 and DmC.
REngine
undeveloped combat
More doesn't mean better. Holy shit go back.
DMC4 is the only game in the franchise where you replay the game twice in one run
DMC1 hate is a good way to tell who mostly plays games from 7th gen onwards and who doesn’t.
DMC4 was peak, MC4 was okay, but pretty boring. I haven't played DMC5 though, is it worth it, or should I not bother?
LMAO
Spotted the tourist.
tourism is when you point out facts about things now huh? DMC4's Dante levels are Mario Kart mirror mode and you know it
imagine skipping 6th gen. so many good games.
I wanna try playing all of the DMC games, which versions are the best way to play them?
You never played 1 or 3.
DMC4 was panned when it came out because of Nero
Wait so if dmc 1 is hated, and dmc 2 is famously awful, how in the fuck did the series survive to make dmc 3, a game people seem to like
if you have the hardware, DMC1 and 3SE are best played on PS2 because the HD collection ports kind of fuck a bunch of the visuals up. Skip 2, it sucks ass. You want to play the Special Editions of each game that has one, with 4SE and 5 being best on PC. 5SE is PS5 only, but I think you can mod in the other new features that aren't a playable Vergil as he's available officially as DLC
at no point do you need to do every level in DMC3 backwards, nor do you need to fight every boss 3 times. Just twice if you want the blue orb fragment from the boss rush room, otherwise you can skip the bulk of the refights. pretty sure you don't do the entire game backwards in DMC1 as well. stop conflating a game having backtracking with having to play the entire game again backwards bozo
dmc1 at the time was extremely well liked, a revelation in 3d action game design. dmc2 was rushed out the door because capcom saw it was a huge success and wanted to capitalize, they produced a bad game. at some point during the production of dmc2 they fired the director and put itsuno on the project, they made itsuno bare the shame of the title.
as repayment to itsuno for taking the fall, they gave him a much larger budget and more carte blanche for dmc3 which was basically on the same level as 1 as far as adulation. so you get 2 amazing, enthralling, well liked games and one rushed shitty game.
Not saying it's your favorite doesn't mean you hate it.
What if I beat 1 on normal without using any items? Does that count for something? I have a hard time replaying games unless it's been years.
DMC1 is one hour clear. Just replay the game for fuck sake.
Took me a lot longer than that
2 has its moments. The Minitarius fight is great and you can see flashes of brilliance in Lucia's weapons / combos. Level design is where DMC2 fails the hardest because it affects both regular gameplay and boss battles, too. Bosses either get a perfectly square arena and a rotating camera or they get a convoluted space with multiple camera angles and multiple objects to fuck with movement. The one and only level that has a good layout is stage 1. After that, it just completely falls apart.
The schedule I heard was that DMC2 was made by a side team and started production before DMC1 released, so not only did the team have no idea what people would like/dislike about DMC1 and were just pawing around in the dark as to what type of action game they should make, but also the different team had different ideas on what Dante should be like.
there's something to that, but wikipedia states that development of 2 began as 1 was wrapping up, meaning they definitely knew the basis of that game and they knew it was hugely anticipated prior to release.
Throughout the turn of the millennium, Team Little Devils—a group within Capcom Production Studio 4 helmed by Hideki Kamiya, who previously lead the successful Resident Evil 2—developed Devil May Cry. As production on that title wound down in the summer of 2001, company management greenlit a sequel, to be made by the arcade-centric Capcom Production Studio 1,[23][24][25] for release soon after the original to capitalize on its high awareness and popularity.[26]
It is more that the entire DMC2 team was different from the first game. Itsuno's team was tapped to do something different immediately. They managed to get him back to try and salvage what he could in like three months time. The only reason DMC2 is even vaguely playable.
There is no reasonable argument for this not being the best action game of all time.
Enemies have more attacks with greater variety
Objectively, categorically false
Enemies have more attacks with greater variety.
Shadow has five attacks. Kyklops has three and Phantom has five. Sargasso has two. Death Scissors has like maybe three. And so on.
Not to say none of the enemies are designed to work with each other the way they are in DMC5. You don't have unique encounters where you have to fight melee enemies with ranged ones, or a lot of small enemies with a big one.
There are secret ways to beat bosses
Also exists in the other games.
prior fights with a boss affect the health/difficulty of future fights
That's just Nightmare.
V
Of course the enemies in DMC1 aren't designed to work in mixed compositions considering that the limitations made it so you could only have one category of enemy model in a room at a time.
V is great. He's a bit undercooked but his playstyle is very unique and has tons of interesting ideas. He's the easiest character to play by far and he has the least amount of missions in the game (a third of his missions are optional too).
He's also an amazing character aesthetically and narratively, and the performance is great. He's just great all around.
4 is a barely finished game with annoying ass enemies.
So if they have tiny movesets and you can't mix enemies what variety are we talking about?
never once posted on reddit
didn't even make an account
i think it's generally true that because of that limitation, most enemies present threat on dante at various ranges, and this makes them more versatile and maybe more memorable in that sense.
STFU faggot
DMCV killed the series
They present more danger because Dante as a whole is less reactive and the camera angles are a complete mess with the type of maps the game has, not to say the lock-on basically has a mind of its own and there isn't even a way to really know what you're locked-on to because there's no crosshair (the game also doesn't tell you how much health an enemy has).
If you put DMC1's enemies against DMC3 or DMC5 Dante they would be a complete joke.
Not to mention*
Not to MENTION you esl rat. Not to say means something totally different
Not being loved as much as a new entry, doesn't mean they are hated.
Fans liking MegaMan X4 more does not mean they hate X2
Hey buddy, /dbs/ is on the other side of the website.
DMC1 is not hated, there are some people who prefer it and they have legitimate reasons. DMC4 is hated because it lacks style and you fight 4 of the 6 bosses twice, but the real complaint there is that Dante has nothing unique to him, just backtracking. Super DMC4 Turbo is held in much higher regard for obvious reasons. Anyone who says they hate 3 or 5 is lying for attention.
Doesn't look like Itsuno did much. There's multiple demos of DMC2 months apart. The levels were all made. The only big differences is animations not being finished for moves like high time. It's not like he crunched the game out all by himself.
The fuck? In what world does DMC2 have more stans than DMC1. There is literally nothing to like about that game.
People didn't care about the backtracking in DMC1 and DMC3. If anything the backtracking in DMC4 should've been even less of an issue because you are doing it with a different character, nobody ever complains about doing it with Vergil in every Special Edition. The truth is the environments are just window dressing in this series.
The real problem is that they filled Dante's levels with bad gimmicks, you have to fight the same bosses again and Dante himself is a complete mess. The last point is the biggest issue.
DMC4 Dante is just a disaster as a character. You have a Rebellion that requires you to style switch to do air combos when you've already played as Nero, whose Red Queen can do that and bunch more. You have Gilgamesh, which is the same gauntlets again, but with a charge mechanics you realistically aren't going to be using, because the thing is so goddamn sluggish. Lucifer is basically non-functional as a melee weapon. Pandora has a whole bar to itself for some insane reason. His DT sucks, specially compared to Nero's. Darkslayer is a complete insult and easily the worst implementation of Yamato in the whole series (and that's a low bar to clear when the first Yamato was just an Alastor skin and Nero's is an automatic Doppelganger).
DMC4 Dante is a character that doesn't know what he wants to be. There's no play style the character is supposed to push you towards, just a bunch of toys thrown on the floor.
1 is a bit too dated for some and is basic in comparison to later entries. 2 is trash. 3 is great. 4 is rushed and feels unfinished and 5 just does 4 but way better.
Filtered.
2 characters play completely different
WOW DUDE
Wrong.
DMC1 is Job
DMC2 is Exodus
DMC3 is Luke
DMC4 is Matthew
DMC5 is Revelation
In that rank order.
Is that what you got from my post? Is your reading comprehension that bad?
2 has more votes than 1
Let me guess, it's from plebbit?
DMC4 was considered the best game until 5. 5 opened the MASSIVE floodgates to secondaries who only played 5 and consider everything before to too retro and hard. 3 only gets a pass because of the memes to them
DMC4 was considered the best game until 5.
Wrong.
5 is considered their favorite so yes. It is from reddit.
It’s quite short, some missions are over in just a few minutes. Styles weren’t even conceived of yet. There are only two truly unique weapons with different movesets. The bosses are few, simple, and get recycled multiple times.
I LOVE DMC1 AND DMC4! i dont understand why people hate DMC2, though
it's been like 17 years since I last played DMC4 but I do remember dantes moveset being weak and I enjoyed play with nero a lot more
DMC4 has some of the most content and best fights. Its BP is still the best
too bad dante feels like complete ass in this game with a loadout consisting of rebellion (his worst weapon in DMC3) the literal worst fist weapon in the franchise only saved because DRI breaks the game and lucifer which has literally 1 good move unless you grind setups for 200 hours along with nerfed to shit trickster/royal guard/guns. also he can't enemy surf anymore even though nero does it in the fucking opening cutscene
I like dmc1 a lot but
Enemies have more attacks with greater variety.
because the game can only load 1 enemy type at a time which turns the entire game into "use move X to instant kill enemy type Y". I dig the old school arcade design kamiya was going for but viewtiful joe is a way better version of everything that makes DMC1 good and you can even play as DMC1 dante in it so objectively the game is like an 8/10 max with bonus nostalgia points for its historical context
people like other games a bit more that means they're hated
dumb ass stupid ass fuckhead
I'll take V over backtracking, QTE's and stupid minigame shit that infests the rest of the genre because at least he's still technically playing devil may cry and his 3 levels can just get skipped on a replay/with mods
dmc1 yamato is really nice if you're playing a fresh DMD game because mission 1 without DT is genuinely the hardest level in the whole fucking game because of how enemy DT works in that game
the backtracking in 1 and 3 weren't nearly as bad because the maps are basically all branching out from one central point for the most part and have looping paths back to the center where 4 is literally a straight line you do twice with the same fucking bosses and puzzles and its worse when you play vergil in special edition since he doesn't have a second character to split the two trips between so its just him fighting the same shit back and forth lmao
