B) Casuals that want to pretend that since there are no difficulty levels, their cheesing + guide looking + summoning run was exactly as skilled as the player that didn't do any of that gay shit
It's literally a non-issue. I have never played Lies of P and I never will, but guess what, anyone that used summons in Elden Ring did not beat the same game I did. I was a better gamer. And by the same token, there's nothing wrong with adding a baby mode for people with disabilities or whatever, because who the fuck cares?

its not about "me better me play harder setting durrr" its about the complete removal of a balanced and carefully curated experience at the expense of complainers who don't like the game anyways.
you might say that Normal is the substitute for what would've been if there was one difficulty, but devs are notorious for either making it way too easy or hard with no in between. most difficulty options are customised via % increases and decreases which are low effort and garbage ways to tailor an experience.
Elden ring doesn't count since summons and spirits are opt-in rather than forced. You still have the one single intended experience, just with an extra bone for those who need it.
Ok, so let's assume Elden Ring 2 has a normal mode and an easy mode that is the same as normal mode but enemies hit 25% as hard and have 40% as much health. Just those two modes. Why would anyone bitch about this?

I'm more worried now this means the DLC is either going to be ass rape hard or somewhat engaging but still too easy now depending on the difficulty options. These kinds of games typically benefit more from a singular tight and well balanced experience.

I dislike difficulty options in general. It muddles the shared experience of playing a game. I like a lot of easy games but not every game needs to be accessible to everyone and if you want to make it so it's way better to just give players the tools to make their run easier. Grind options. Crutches. Handicaps.

I think it just fucks up the balancing. Most games with difficulty sliders are piss easy on the lower difficulties and only a challenge on the hardest because they make everything tankier.
Games with one option for difficulty don't have this problem because the devs don't have to factor in exactly how to make each difficulty, which is why games like Dark Souls and Lies of P benefit from having only one option.

if you bought game and were presented with these options, which would you pick for first playthrough? Probably not the first one, unless you deliberately wanted easy mode. And probably not the 3rd one, because difficulties named “legendary” are usually fucking awful, especially for first playthrough. It sounds like meme tier macocist difficulty.
So you naturally pick the middle option. Which one would assume is “normal”. But it’s not. It’s easy mode. It isn’t easy, medium, hard. It’s very easy, easy, normal. In order to play game as intended (and as anyone who played it from launch until now played it) you have to select “Legendary Stalker”. Which nearly zero people will do if they don’t have outside knowledge.
Then BAM we have player data that says that 90% of new players (as opposed to returning players) picked Very Easy or Easy. Therefore that is the audience we cater to for future releases.
Because these companies see player drop off and assume 100% of people who quit game did so because it was too hard. They cannot fathom player quitting just because they didn’t like game, or any other reason.
This is why Lords of the Fallen patched out an entire boss fight. They straight up removed the fight vs Lightreper in tutorial where you are supposed to die. Because they assumed the massive player drop off after tutorial was anger at a scripted death. But I highly doubt many people quit because of that. They quit because game is just kinda shit. But by trying to appeal to these imaginary people who quit game due to a one-time scripted death, they removed introduction of games antagonist (he know appears later and acts like he knows you, despite having never appeared before) and also removed cutscene intruding the most important story NPC.
