Actually it was a happy socialist community corrupted by capitalism (The introduction of money and consumerism via happy boxes) and a fat manchild pushing an authoritarian movement who was never held accountable for his crimes.

The humor in Mother 3 is admittedly funnier, and the final boss is godlike, but that's about it as far as improvements go.

Mother 3 has one of the worst pacing issues out of any game I've played. The first half is way too long and the second half is way too short. The halfway point should have actually been the first third of fourth of the game. There are also absolutely asinine sections, like the part where you have to walk across the seafloor, or Leder's cringeworthy exposition dump.

Overall, Mother 3 is a clumsy, confused mess that lacks the creative vision and biting cleverness of Earthbound. The story's heavy-handed messaging trips over itself constantly and ends up saying nothing by the end.
