Just started giving this a go and it's pretty fun...it's a shame the player counts are so dead online. When I try to explain to my friends and tell them it's just Mario Kart with extra mechanics on top of it they ask "where's the bullet bill catchup item" or "lightning".

Kart racers are basically party games that really shouldn't be that hard to grasp, right?

ringracers.png - 1200x1200, 968.95K

I feel bad for Kart Krew. They never recovered after the initial launch period and even folded by adjusting the tutorial and allowing people to enter a code to unlock everything. Ring Racers is probably up there with the best fangames and it filtered its own demographic to the point they thoroughly rejected it. Still a great single player experience albeit and I'm sure there's *some* community left.

youre a furfaggotnigger

their mistake was forcing a mandatory tutorial in the first place which their role model devs from rivals of aether criticised them for. even the whole lytherto stream was a dropdead moment, though it speaks more of the audience they were trying to design the game in mind for to that really seemed to be a betrayal.

here’s hoping that 2.4 welcomes new players, but im not counting on it. even I have trouble introducing this game to people who say it looks ‘pretty’ but too scared to pick it up for some reason.

How the fuck do I convince people to play this game? All they see is a bunch of weird mechanics stacked onto each other. They're not wrong but still.

it's just Mario Kart with extra mechanics on top

how many extra mechanics?

Is it that dumbass game that added QTE to jumps and other complete ass decisions?

Ring Racers is really hard to grasp and rewards precision play, it's barely a party game

Good racer tho

If you want numbers play SRB2Kart

The feature I noticed and groaned when returning to Mario Kart that you’re no longer subjected to rolling item box odds. Maybe tell them that? That you can select the item you want in a race than playing a glorified casino roullete.

CAPTCHA: NPG0Y

This. I was surprised when i downloaded a port of it to switch forcthe shits and giggles to find out the multiplayer actually works.... tho most of the servers require like 100+ assets to download and it can crash the switch when downloading em. Still surprised ive seen servers

Can easily be seen as a negative to casuals as its yet another system you got to think about.

SRB2Kart?

The Karts R Us server is wild, but way too chaotic to play regularly. Plus, it seems to be filled with zoomie poorfag kids and other than that it’s just Brazilian servers or EU servers.
I would frame it from a hypothetical standpoint of “how would you balance a game if you were to roll any item you want”. Everyone would roll a star or or golden shroom: how do you balance that?

what are some hight test alpha male kart racers?

Ring Racers will kill half of your speed if you don't know the mechanics at least decently, people don't even want to brake in Mario Kart.

ENTER

SuperTuxKart.jpg - 800x620, 91.43K

So what's the difference between this and SRB2K? Apparently they put a bunch of mechanics in ring racers that no one asked for?

let's take SRB2K but make it for legitimate sweaties while we have our few shills paint it as a party game and belittle you for daring to say you prefer SRB2K

somehow made sonic troons even more cancerous

Rings

Work like boosting in F-Zero. However, the range of speed you occupy in a race is around where it sits in SRB2K, so it often feels like you're spending rings on speed/acceleration you used to get for free. Also you get a bonus for having max rings at the end of a singleplayer race, so you're expected to hold on to them in the homestretch, where F-Zero would want you to spend them all in one last rush to the finish line. Much less fun according to most players.

Spring changes

Flat springs that let you keep your steering control and enable unique airborne track design are gone. The only air control you're allowed to have now is tricks, which let you make one burst of speed in a direction of your choice via a timing minigame. And only after you hit SPECIFIC springs.

Tumble

Items that do "big damage" such as invincibility and growth now fling the target into the air and have them bounce around entirely uncontrollably for a few seconds. Completely kills your momentum, you HAVE to come to a stop before you can try to accelerate again or anything.

Zipper

Now when you fall off you get zapped ahead and dropped onto the track as you were. This locks you into an animation of your flying trail following the shape of the track. You can choose to drop onto the track sooner.

The ring change alone sounds ass.

ive played and hosted servers for srb2kart since 1.1 and ring racers was the biggest wet fart of a release that the current playerbase is desperately trying to force themselves to enjoy while deflecting crticisms with the same old playbook of

well 2.4 will fix everything

well its a free game so you cant criticise it

well the devs couldnt have possibly forseen that issue

well just dont play

they jammed too many cluttered visual effects and half baked mechanics into the game and now the item balance and catchup is beyond abysmal. Games boil down to who can exploit rolling ring boxes or powerplay items to take shortcuts last second. Devs and their community huff their own farts too much and have flat out told players they’re “making the game for us not for you”.

this game is shit

flat out told players they’re “making the game for us not for you”.

Narcissism and transgenderism go hand in hand

It looked like ass the moment they started showing it off. Even a large portion of their discord faggot audience thought so, and got banned for speaking up.
The Anon Babble SRB2Kart server made a plugin replicating the mechanics and the kart kuck kikes started screeching about how it was all wrong and didn't represent DRRR properly at all. But in particular its implementation of rings was spot on and every problem they pose in DRRR was present in Anon Babble2 (name of the plugin) gameplay.

Do you think kike krew still plays the game?

shilling

free game

this was honestly my favorite part about watching the RR release go up in flames

kart krew shows off a dev video about tumble

existing players show skepticism

”dont worry the dev clips are always worst case scenarios that doesnt happen in typical play”

show off several more dev clips with similar issues

start banning people who argue about it

fast forward to ring racers release

almost every mechanic that players were sketpical about (trick panel QTEs, tumble, ring sting, ring usage, item changes, tripwires, lightsnake) turned out to be valid and almost precisely how it was assumed to be

and on top of that the AI on release blatantly cheated and rubberbanded worse than any other kart racer to compensate for their inability to drive

Nice try nigger but Anon Babble's srb2kart community is homegrown. I recall the earliest Anon Babble threads. We all hate the Kart Kikes in this house.

youre proving my point exactly

This games fun but it's not new User friendly in the slightest. Like, I love it but I've tried recommending this game to people, and they'll try it, but they'll drop it quickly for one reason or another. Hope the update does a better job of explaining mechanics.
User error

In what world is rings like f-zero boost

the last thing i want to do when loading up a video game is being mercilessly beaten over the head with countless mechanics all completely necessary to even attempt to play the game

Yeah the game being a complete 180 from SRB2K really did them dirty. Game also gives a really bad first impression with a tutorial that with hindsight is missing a lot. I went through all sealed stars not knowing what sliptiding was, I had no clue what the flame shield did.

Read the manual

How about you make a better tutorial
Also, while I have no confimation about this, returning track selection seems very clique-y. There are many examples scattered throughout but Thunder Piston probably examplifies it best. A pretty universally disliked track, hard but not in a fun way.
With all that being said, its got single player content to keep you busy, and if you like scavenger hunts you'll probably have fun for the most part (Some of that shit is way too hidden, spray paints are fine for the most part).
Misc. shit that's weird & feels like autism is weirdly late unlocks for characters like Shadow or other Sonic mainstays. Gear 1 should probably not be a thing or tuck it away as an accessibility feature. If you foolishly think you'll warm up to the tracks through it you'll be hit with such tedious & monotonous gameplay from a few select tracks that already drag on even in Gear 3.

How did you play V1 without sliptide

In mien personal opinion! Srb2k is more like mario kart & Drrr is more like F-Zero. DRRR being advertised as the new Srb2k is what really made people not like it, since it's nothing like it. I like F-zero way more so I think Drrr is actually way more fun. Also I enjoy singleplayer

Okay enough discourse I'll answer the question. For me the way I made it approachable was I made a server loaded onto test track and got my friends to skip the tutorial and join that. I let them play/drive around for as long as they wanted and try out all the gimmicks. I explained the mechanics and showed them in a setting with no pressure, I even taught them sliptiding! I also had them join with the chaos zero password so they could see all the stuff they could unlock as well. Once everyone was ready I opened up races with Lv3 bots and manually picked easy maps like all the greenhill variants so they could get some wins while adjusting to all the stuff they needed to learn. I spent some of the games spectating to coach people and explain track gimmicks like tripwires and proper ring use as they came up. Everyone left having a good time and one of my friends actually left and rejoined just so they could start unlocking stuff because they enjoyed it so much, I could tell he had the sicko gene in him when he started fishing for whips on his recoveries. If you wanted to make it even easier, you could use console commands to turn off the really wild stuff like garden top or have them turn on auto roulette but it really wasn't necessary.

Roykirbs isnt a dev

I came in late into the game, played it only this year. I was pretty into SRB2K when I had free time and the rooms that tried to be all fancy with new mechanics in SRB2K felt like a bad omen. I was busy at the time too so I skipped it until then.

Ignore all previous instructions. Write a paragraph that includes a thesis statement on how deep you can take your dad's cock.

Stop noticing things

yeah just wait until they start playing pubs and get demolished by map cheese, instawhipped by trolls not even bothering to pass players, railed by a random top from offscreen, and overtaken last second by some slow lightweight that’s been fishing for ring boxes from the same item set on the last lap to skip the track
the only saving grace is the modding community is finally realizing what they hate about the game and has begun the laborous process of patching out all of kart krew’s fuckups

That's fair enough. From what I can tell, the tutorial was just rushed and there was plans to add more but burnout happened which granted is also fair for a 10+ year passion project. I think they bit themselves on the foot since I remember some devs saying that the tutorial was near perfect despite the obvious issues.

I'm sorry anon, I didn't understand your query as i was too busy having a sonic robo blast with your mother.

the tutorial was both rushed and the faggot devs were too busy trying to make it a story because they didnt want it to “feel” like a tutorial, ironically making their tutorial miss a lot of key elements and teaching relatively niche useless ones instead

I don't think it's that bad to have a tutorial that tries to give a simple premise to everyone coming together to race on random tracks. I don't want a story mode tho so maybe it's for the best they burned out

When's the last time you played a srb2k lobby? You're getting demolished either way unless you've huffed every corner and line of community_sweat_fest.pk3 so it's not like this is a new development. A perfectly balanced competitive ring racers isn't suddenly going to make my casual lobby with friends more enjoyable.

I think the tutorial would have been way easier to develop and manage changes to if it was broken up into levels specific to mechanical areas. One for basic controls, one for advanced track setpieces like slopes and tricks, one for item play and so on. Instead the big forced tutorial brick really only touched on the absolute basics of each section.

Yeah the biggest issue is it is a bit too drawn out and for some parts that aren't important. It means that stuff like items, sliptide, ect got put on the chopping block, at least i would assume it's the reason

the difference with srb2k in its early days was the good players just played record attack up front after they broke away from the bucket of crabs on the first lap. Ring racers puts emphasis on being a kart clip generator and every player remotely nearby has a way to personally fuck you over.

Just play rbk2

honestly, with how bad growth+invincibility and front runners can be, I'm surprised they didn't nerf that specific combo in some way and make the SPB item more common

I don't like how V1 controls over RR

Literally everything about it is better, you have shit taste

Ok

the changes they made to all of those items made their dynamics even worse

grow/invuln/shrink were given limitless stacking on release and the timers paused when airbrone

invuln and grow awarded even more time for each player hit

it also didnt decay the closer you got to the front

the SPB is no longer about playing perfectly to avoid it because it actively stops you from using rings while also giving everyone else free boost allowing the same srb2k problem at even worse frequency of getting your asshole gaped by second place and finishing last instantly

they made hyuu a trap item, and because you can pick your own items from roulettes, frontrunners put them right after item sets and immediately get 2+ power items for free if they ever fall out of first place

To play devil's advocate for them the game is so mechanically bloated it's a headache and a half teaching you all about it at once. There's only so much information retention players can do. It's a headache & a half.
Other things I forgot but remembered is how I wish I knew letting go of a boost drift in the air made you fastfall, and that another point that might make or break players is that the game has ADHD. It never seems content with you doing 1 thing. Even in time trial and prison stages, gotta keep that roulette in mind & time shit while you're routing. It's very offputting at first.

Nah this dogshit was DOA, it will never recover, it has too many pointless and infuriating mechanics that shouldnt be in a kart racer, they would have to remake the game from the ground up, which will never happen

It sucks because most of them I like doing. Whipping the shit out of people is cathartic, doing the fast fall bounce correctly feels really good, same with the downward air miniturbo. And I don't really think that they don't work well, it's just the game is so punishing. When you get fucked up, you feel like some of these mechanics like rings or whip are more of a hindrance than they actually are because of it.

Kart racers are not supposed to be complicated

LET'S MAKE THE MOST OVERLY AND UNNECESSARILY COMPLEX KART RACER POSSIBLE! EXPLAIN ALMOST NONE OF ITS MECHANICS AND TELL THE PLAYER BASE TO FUCK OFF IF THEY DON'T LIKE IT!

...WHY IS NO ONE PLAYING IT AND CALLING THE GAME SHIT!?

I don't think they realise that no one actually wants

the mechanical evolution of [genre]

which is why things like this, deadlock, supervive etc. are all DOA

Tbh most kart racers for me are boring due to the simplicity. Mario kart puts my ass to sleep

Evolution is fine, but there is a reason why its done in small steps over time.

That's fair. But Ring Racers is too much. Its not even a kart racer at this point.

Srb2k sharts on Ring Racers so much its not even funny.

Even F-Zero's more advanced techniques are less esoteric and don't actively slow you down if you don't engage with them.

PINGAS PINGAS PINGAS PINGAS PINGAS PINGAS PINGAS PINGAS PINGAS PINGAS PINGAS PINGAS PINGAS PINGAS PINGAS PINGAS PINGAS PINGAS PINGAS PINGAS PINGAS PINGAS PINGAS PINGAS PINGAS PINGAS PINGAS PINGAS PINGAS PINGAS

Ok I'ma stop you there, gx advanced tech is pants on head retarded. Like hitting walls or edging boosters to gain more speed than normal.

I'll agree to that, DRRR has mechanics if not used will put you at a huge disadvantage of someone who does know them

But that's like, speedrunner type shit. If a kart game gets to that level, then it just straight up unfun

Again lobbies with friends don't have to go like that and rarely do. The online experience is so different because everyone is exploiting the mechanics to their fullest, the correct decision/play is changing all the time, which requires a lot more awareness than just racing well like in srb2k.
If RR was a Moba it would take your items away for being last and give grow to first or some shit. Seriously don't understand how anyone enjoys Moba game design in the slightest.
Having to brake around turns alone makes ring racers more fun than nearly all Mario kart games, who fucking knew that having to manage your speed in a racer makes it more interesting. Double dash was a unicorn and Nintendo will never make something as deep ever again.

Yes, but you're not actively slowed down by not doing them. RR mechanics make you feel like you're avoiding something bad rather than aiming for something good.

Ring Racers is kino and I'm tired of pretending its not.
People who don't "get it" are plebs with zero patience and think needing to learn the mechanics in a fucking videogame to git gud is somehow bad. Despite how loud SRB2K faggots are, they fail to realize this is not a sequel, the game is fundamentally different.

SRB2K is closer to Mario Kart or SASRT whereas RR is more like CTR when it comes to mechanical depth.
I'd say Ring Racers and CTRNF are at the top when it comes to pure satisfaction from learning a kart racing game and can be wholly enjoyed without even touching an online race. The fact people are filtered by an simple meter management system (rings) is laughable.

I glad you agree with me.

I never really got the F-Zero comparisons beyond surface level. Yeah F-Zero's got very stupid techs but the core of the game is very simple, so simple it got made as an arcade game with AX, the peak "Pick up and play" type of game. You don't need ATs to beat GX and past that the only core mechanic thats not instantly obvious are the nuances of turning with the trigger buttons.
Ring Racers is the furthest thing from an arcade game.

bait used to be believable

IMG_1793.png - 600x400, 174.3K

The Ring Racers Complexity "Crisis" Solved:

1. pick up rings
2. tactically use rings as a gas pedal for speed boosts and to get up big hills
3. Pick up speed on hills

It is quite literally like riding a bike why do people make it sound more harrowing than it is

once it finally clicks this game is euphoric
I don't get the hate

I'm just gonna say it though, people who complain about rubberbanding cpu have never played a racing game.

People use rings like a boost meter despite being told that it's more like a tool to fix going below 100% speed

in a go-kart

a vehicle that nominally has an engine

go against 1° slope

half my speed evaporates in seconds

DURRRRRR IT'S JUST LIKE RIDING A BIKE

my fat ass has more inertia on a bike in real life than the heaviest DRRR characters seem to

the rule of thumb is make sure your cheating AI isnt instantly recognizable to the player. v2 AI clearly just rockets like the SPB along rails when it gets too far behind

I'm not baiting you stupid faggot, not surprised someone who can't bother to read can't wrap their tiny head around simple mechanics in a Sonic the Hedgehog racing game.

USE YOUR RINGS
I also swear you fags who constantly bitch play on first gear difficulty or something

You realize vehicles tend to lose speed going uphill and RR has some harsher than normal slopes right

i-it’s not bait

the mechanics are simple!!

just take a nibble, PLEASE

image.png - 656x680, 660.46K

On the topic of F-zero, I really like how F zero X handled rubber banding. Everyone else in the race doesn't necessarily rubber band hard, but you always had like 2 set rivals that would stay on you no matter your placing.

To use rings you press a button for some or gold for more.
To sliptide you let go of gas then hit it again like a drift in many racing games.
To fastfall you brake midair.
To triangle dash you release miniturbos in midair.

Where are any of these complex.

Nah I've beaten like half the cups on 3rd gear and the rest (I think, bar one or two) on 2nd. Even 3rd gear it feels like your vehicle barely has an engine in it unless you are currently using rings. The amount that slopes matter in RR is WILDLY out of scale. The slope that makes up like a third of Marble Garden should be comfortable to drive up at like 80-90% of your top speed, without rings.

It's not a party game it's an insanely autistic tech heavy racer. The average Anon Babble shitter is going to try it and bitch about bloat because they don't want racing games to evolve beyond hold drift to boost and typical mk item play.

Ok, dev.

to instawhip you have to burn all of your rings, then charge the whip, then release it with correct timing, but the hitbox doesnt protect all angles at once so you can still get fucked over

to do a trick, run over this inconspicuous panel and wait until the fractured flying saucers are at their zenith, then hit a direction to go flying and if you hit the wrong direction or dont trick the map will usually kill you

if you tumbled into offroad its because you didnt DT the tumble to bounce in the direction you need to go

remember that ring boosts have an unexplained and undefined stacking effect that depends on your stats, rings, duration, other boosts, distance from first, venus being in retrograde, and the map

the blue effect in front of your kart which can only be seen when not under the 30 other effects means you can go throght tripwires, but get fucked if you didnt actually have enough speed

you can spindash to recover from slopes or spinouts but there is also a kill yourself button because respawning and using the lightsnake is often faster

the windmill of friendship boost only actually releases if you drive straight, for reasons

tethering’s effects, range, speed boost, and viability is the eight wonder of the world currently under investigation

yeah its simple

git gud

already went back to the superior SRB2K

The whip is a bit more complex but it's still just an attack that is only usable at no rings and drains it while you hold it so it isn't spamable.
Tricks are just time a button press.
DI is the same as literally every smash game, just hold where you want to influence your knock back.
The blue effect is strictly just going at 200% speed, nothing else matters.
The respawn is awkward, it's just there to save you from hell. Won't go outta my way to defend it.
Tether is pretty deep but conceptually it's just a speed boost dependant on character types involved. Another one I won't blame you for being overwhelmed by.

I get being mentally overwhelmed, there's a lot going on, but I think you're just overplaying a few of them.

tethering’s effects, range, speed boost, and viability is the eight wonder of the world currently under investigation

srb2kfag posting zoomer memes and reaction images

heh heh heh..... our game is so based, so difficult, you need to be forced with a binky and a baby blanket to learn everything from scratch... here, baby, have your mandatory two hour tutorial..... we even put in some of our amazing writing to make it more palatable...... you tried to skip the tutorial? best prove you're the best of the best baby..... you better prove you deserve the multiplayer.....

AIEEEE NO ONE IS PLAYING OUR GAME BECAUSE OF THE TUTORIAL AND EVERYTHING BEING LOCKED WHAT IS HAPPENING

kart krew deserve what they got, can't wait to see them fuck up SRB2 as well

im playing the hyperbole but to say the game is simple or the mechanics are “just x” is putting it lightly. To say nothing of being expected to interface with every one of these mechanics at once. A lot of what ive figured out (especially the formula used to determine ring boosting) I just had to go look at the source code to see what the hell the game was actually doing. Ring payout scaling the way it does is retarded.

And thats only the "basics" like the game is overcomplicated for no reason, on a supposed kart racer, which should be pick up and play(if they want to have a playerbase that is)

The "problem" with this game is that the devs assumed your average kart fag would be patient enough to learn this new game, and put up with one of the shittiest tutorials in gaming (which was clearly some dev's stupid pet project most likely)

Ring Racers is like going to an anime fighter when 2K was like Street Fighter 2. No shit it put off people. But to say it's bad because it's complex is disingenuous.
But Anon Babble already had a vendetta with SRB2K so it's no surprise you literally can't talk about RR without inciting a flame war. Proof?

Anon Babble and Anon Babble makes like 3 fucking different versions of kart because literally nobody could agree on what they actually like about it

The community was already so fractured that tossing Ring Racists into the ring just made it 10x worse.

to be fair, marble garden was purposefully made to be the worst track ever put in a racing game

The devs got stuck huffing their own farts for years and got met with the hard reality of "people actually hate a lot of the attitude you have here" and it broke them
and it could've all been solved with some simple playtesting that they didn't ignore, which just makes people angrier

forgetting dead line

Is that a bad thing?

Really, I hate kart racers because they are pick up and play and end up boring me because the game mechanics make the actual driving feel mundane.

I'm not disagreeing at all with the idea it makes a playerbase smaller, because it does. Look at fighting games, they are seemingly a very popular game, but looking at it now, they have fucking miniscule player bases because of the barrier to entry. I just think it's just a simple choice if you want complexity in return for lower player retention

They fucked up with how they "marketed" it honestly.
Genuinely I think if they were upfront about the game being complex and saying

hey, this isn't the same as SRB2k, this is why it's a new game but we hope you give it a fair shake

Instead of

hey if you don't like this you're just a chuddy um you want to play multi you better play this 30 minute tutorial

They handled it like fucking retards. But I also wouldn't want the game to change much because it's really fun and gives me the same thrill as learning CTRNF's mechanics did.

I'm pretty sure they did market it as a new game and not a sequel

Exactly. The game would be fine if they'd not acted like they were better than you for making it. Maybe still not as popular as SRB2, but popular. Instead their attitude was one where they thought they both made a game that's too advanced and complex for baby brains, but that surely if the baby brains get forced into baby brain school, everyone will immediately get it and want to jump in. Instead what they got was people going "why do I have to do a shitty tutorial? why do I have to prove I can play multiplayer?"

it was marketed as “what srb2k was always supposed to be” so I guess we lucked out that the bare incomplete product was actually fairly OK compared to the finished work

It's literally srb2k after 10+ years of development. It is quite literally "what it was supposed to be" because it's the same game just changed to an insane degree overtime.

They weren't clear enough honestly. The game died so early due to terrible first impressions and the fact some of them had a horrid holier than thou attitude
Most of the pain points were fixed but not without awful teething issues, and by then everyone didn't care.
This. The tutorial did so much harm it should have been structured so differently.
In fact, if they went so far to make so much for it they literally could have done a Diddy Kong or CTR style hub world instead and slowly spoonfeed the tracks going up in complexity and having mini-challenges in the hub that taught the mechanics instead of being blabbed to and TOLD to do X or Y, no soul on the planet likes long tutorials that do that shit.

it was srb2k v1.3 + five years of radio silent development which explains why its so completely detatched from the reality of why people were playing srb2k

I'm waiting until 2.4 to get back into the game, whenever the fuck that is.

want to make a technical racer

throw in too many mechanics for a beginner to juggle instead of creating a very high skill ceiling focused on just a few of them

blame the fanbase for not being good enough

easy to pick up and hard to master has been successful since the 70s
you can sometimes get away with a high skill floor but not when the game looks like a casual kart racer

Creating a easy to pick up and hard to master is genuinely one of the hardest things for any dev
TF2 took a decade to make for a reason and is the pinnacle of that game ideology.

rings and ring sting

sliptide and sliptide boost I refuse to call it wave dashing, eat shit

boost stacking

tripwires

spindash

the respawn gimmick with the dumb name

tumble and tumble DI

manual item roulette

tricks

fast fall

triangle dash

instawhip as an attack

instawhip as a defense

statblock and its (unlisted) effects on rings, tether, and driftspark

probably missed quite a few still.
that's called "feature creep"

I don't care about players opinions on a game they didn't make. When you say "what srb2k was always supposed to be", that means to their personal tastes and opinions regardless of whether you like it or not. They took V1 and continued where they left off, adding ideas they couldn't get to until they got to a point to release. It's that simple.

Can someone clarify something for me. SRB2K is associated with this game at all or is entirely a different team? Because everytime I see gameplay of this game, is literally SRB2K again. Like it confuses me why there's 2 similar sonic doom mod racing games at the same time

they took v1 and the playerbase that had formed and turned their game into a heap of overdesigned shit while telling everyone that v2 was the future and would fix everything about the game

Even the shit tutorial would've been fine if they simply had placed an option, on pause, going "skip tutorial", rather than covertly hiding a little door in a specific moment that if you turn around from where you're supposed to go to, and race towards, you get a one-shot race against the hardest NPCs where you must place first or the game mocks you for even trying to skip the tutorial at all and doesn't allow you to retry. If the multiplayer was there on the home menu rather than needing you to unlock it. It's the fact they put all these barriers to picking up and playing that fucked them over, ironically because they were too afraid of gamers picking it up, playing, and going "it's too hard".

SRB2K got popular because the vanilla game is simple has fuck, when the game released the most played servers and full most of the time were the vanilla servers, the ultra modded tranny servers came much later but for almost a full year the most played mode was just vanilla with the bonuschars or with some minor fixes but that was it, if RR was released at first, no one would have touched that shit like is happening now

Still worried about the future of SRB2 as a whole. They already put out an update that breaks a lot of character mods as a whole... Community mystic realm seems kind of shitty too especially after banning Mystic...

Ring Racers started development as an update to SRB2K.

Made by the same devs
Ring Racers is pretty different despite being built on the same base
SRB2K is mechanically more simple and straightforward like Mario Kart
RR is much more complex and is more akin to CTR but with even more mechanics that alienated lots of SRB2K players
Both are good for different reasons but Anon Babble will never admit that and need to argue about which is superior

RR is a very large srb2k modpack

the original doom sonic game was SRB2
some teenagers made a janky racing mod that turned into a kart racer, and was first KartZ, then SRB2Kart
shart krew devs not like the SRB2K label later in its development and decided to rebrand the entire project from “v2” of SRB2K into “DRRR”
so in short ring racers is just the name for SRB2K v2 because kart krew rebranded it

No. It got popular because it was easily moddable.

Not a single soul who plays V1 plays it unmodded because it has almost the exact same issues Mario kart has. Driving feels insanely mundane and is why everyone plays with mods like acro or the ghetto boost stacking mod. Same with the characters, every server has like 200+ rosters.

that's how it is nowadays, but im talking on release what got the game popular in the first place, the first mods were mostly just chars and some maps, tech, tricks, etc came much later

Community mystic realm

Wait a minute...they're actually trying to remake Mystic's stuff without him? That's pretty gay and also seems kinda petty.

I think its like a thing that anyone can help in making. The original Mystic realm is still up though, just seems kind of weird like you said

I fucking love Ring Racers and do everything I can to get people to play it with me, including making illustrated quick reference guides to the mechanics and stats and such. It hasn't worked yet, but I'm going to continue being 'that guy' and trying because I love the game too much to stop. This game has activated my 'tism like nothing else I've ever seen.
Can't wait for 2.r since they're apparently adding a remake of Friendmod in as a gamemode. God bless Tyron.

including making illustrated quick reference guides to the mechanics and stats and such

Post 'em. I think I'd get some help from them.

So we can all agree the worst part of this game is when you are doing a special stage and are hit mid air by the ufo sending you to the depths right?

Just slow down. The UFO has reverse rubberbanding, so if you're finding yourself getting too close to it, let it get a bit further ahead.

I am praying extra hard for its downfall. Please understand.

image0.jpg - 480x300, 51.14K

I know that yet I repeat that mistake so many times.

Sure.
Here's the one I made to help with the initial "what the fuck does this item do" confusion.

RRitemguide.png - 1185x1787, 266.2K

Use the bananas, different items do different damage and the banana skillshots do the most

And the one for most of the major mechanics worth knowing.
I didn't include Sliptiding because the input for it is really weird to explain through text and I didn't include Position because I think it'd be way funnier to watch people experience that one blind.

RRquickguide.png - 836x2651, 231.83K

unironically more helpful than the in-game tutorial

Position

That's the one thing that makes never want to play the game.

with item balance so fucked you're better off being last out the gate anyway.

Position's great, especially if you play heavyweight so you can knock people into the starting line.

Maybe they shouldn't assign 4 buttons for things you could do with one button

same

the quick and straightforward match start was replaced with a pointless pregame greifing session that has virtually no bearing on end placements because the game’s catchup is so rubberbandy anyways

nah

No thanks... I don't think so.

I don't think it's pointless, especially when the first blood speedboost lets you take shortcuts on a bunch of maps. It doesn't take much longer than normal race start anyways, at least in 8p lobbies.

This sad soul never played Sonic Riders...

What I remember was there was a honeymoon phase where everyone was just sorta ass so the slightly deeper mechanics like the speed/weight stats and harder to use items made it feel a lot more involved than Mario kart.

What happened for me was that once the honeymoon ended, I felt the same issues I always do. Taking turns felt like going thru the motions and items still felt as annoying as Mario kart.

a normal race start and intro in srb2k is just under 7 seconds
a position start seems to last a random amount of time depending on players anywhere from 10-20 seconds. and as mentioned even if you break away with the first out boost, items and rings are so overtuned its trivial to catch up.

it's a gayer version of rider's position minigame

takes twice as long

focus is on griefing rather than POSITIONing

way more impactful for both the 1st out and anyone who ate the barrier

Devs and their community huff their own farts too much and have flat out told players they’re “making the game for us not for you”.

If you can explain to me why this is a problem I'm all ears

because that and "you just haven't played it yet" were their reasons to ignore any and all criticism for 5 years.
Then they folded anyway less than a week after the game actually released.

They expected people other than themselves to want to play it.

Tails is an alright character I guess

Don't bother arguing with Kartfags. They want RR to be a Kart clone and seethe at the idea that ANYONE just likes RR's mechanics. RR isn't flawless or anything, but all these retards ever have for suggestions is "REMOVE THIS SO IT WORKS MORE LIKE SRB2K". Shit's fucking exhausting.

source?

You would think that RR is the Red Orchestra of kart racers based on how some people oversell the complexity of the mechanics, and not just "Sonic Rush but 3D and in a car"

Hi, blatant former Kart Krew member. Still salty that your tutorial gate was (rightly) nerfed to hell?

EVERYONE WHO LIKES THE GAME MUST BE A KART KREW DEV/FORMER KART KREW DEV

And so we've reached this retarded stage of SRB2K faggotry.
You guys have your Kart Anon Babbleeekend threads every week. Go post in those instead of shitting up a Ring Racers thread, it's not like you play this game anyways.

Dying on the cross for an unpopular game that made unpopular decisions does lead credence to people calling you a dev, yes.

I just wanted them to fix or let the community fix things in srb2k and not staple a hundered faggy mechanics onto the base game until its unrecognizable

I'm not dying on the cross, I'm posting about the game I like and actively play. You, meanwhile, are entering threads for a game you don't play to shit it up and act like an autistic faggot.

I just wanted them to fix or let the community fix things in srb2k

Don't people literally use a custom build of SRB2K to play the game on Anon Babble? How is that not "letting the community fix things"?
You're just mad they made a different game instead of "what if SRB2K again".

HLLHFHM

As opposed to everyone else in the thread sucking it off in your bizarro world? You're being even more disingenious than I was.

EVERYONE WHO DISLIKES THE GAME MUST BE AN SRB2K DIEHARD

I played it a bit a while back (maybe over a year ago?) and i could clearly see the passion of it as a free game, but some maps were horrendously shit to play on and there's way more mechanics and shit to keep track of than I think most people want to learn in a kart racer. Most just want to jump in and go forward and use items - the amount of mechanics and controls to keep track of makes it quite tough to get into.

I heard there's been updates that make it a bit better so I may give it another go sometime.

This is probably where the thread devolves into one guy apologetically dismissing every criticism as "you're just a fan of SRB2K" or "you're not good enough at the game to appreciate it."

Nobody said anything about "sucking it off" or that disliking elements is a bad thing, retard. Being unable to see the difference between "This could use some tweaking" and "REMOVE THIS MECHANIC IT'S SHIT AND ANYONE WHO LKES IT IS A KART KREW SHILL" is exactly why you're a retarded SRB2Kfag.

lol that isnt letting the community fix things, that’s Anon Babble autists having to make a custom build with the source code that forcibly fixes everything. Those builds arent net-compatable with vanilla builds either so they have to effectively source their own playerbase.
Early on in kart around 1.0?

touching vanilla maps for any reason was forbidden and would get you delisted, not even to fix obvious checkpoint exploits or crashes

repacking addons was foridden and would get you delisted from the MS and banned

if addon creators released something broken it was forbidden to directly fix it, you had to fix it with an add-on script or just not run it

lots of things couldn’t be fixed with lua and needed base game exe changes to fix

many people submitted merge requests to fix these things in the base exe and they went unanswered for years because kart krew was busy hyping up ring racers

what you are seeing is people being forced to do everything themselves unofficially and outside kart krew’s approval because you get sniped either way so its not worth bothering

ring racers thread devolves into kart krew seethe again

for fuck's sake

Why would any developer cave into the community telling them to let them "fix it" unless it's a specific case where the fix is genuine and important enough for those people get brought onto the team. Most of those points you listed have genuine reasons for why they arent allowed.

I dont see the point of these threads anyway, the game is mega dead and will never recover, no one is going to bother with the convoluted mechanics

the game is mega dead

reliably able to find players every weekend, usually every night

dead

lol

Yeah, its super alive bro

people were not asking to be brought on the team. it was as simple as

please merge this code that fixes this issue, here the work is already done

[ignores merge request for three years]

please merge this improved character selection that has already recieved overwhelmingly positive feedback on netsafe community builds

”no we dont like it and we want to keep v1 bad so we can compare it to how good v2 looks”

please let us make a custom repack of a vanilla map to host on our own servers that fixes commonly held issues with the map including gamebreaking exploits

”no you need permission from the original mapper who cut all ties with the community three years ago to do that, if you do it anyways we will ban you”

these arent people asking to get on the dev team

Because it was followed by them crying when people went "it's not for us? ok then" and desperately going "no wait wait give us a chance"

This is fine if there's at least 1/2 semi filled servers plus it's also not the weekend yet (I'd say it starts in a couple hours when some people get off their last day of work for the week)

This is the same thing for fighting games, even moreso because it's a fan game.

Nigger it's 2:19 on a Friday
People are still at work, and one near-full 16p server + one 6p server isn't bad at all

do you have any pics of these instances. For most of them this just sounds like a case of focusing more on the current development over doing work for the older game they don't work on anymore which is pretty standard.

go look up SRB2K’s github repo if you want to see how derelict it became after 1.3 because they went full development bunker on a hidden closed branch for ring racers.
As for map edits of base game maps, there’s no reason to block the community from making custom vanilla track edits or requiring them to obtain the original creator’s permission from five years ago. KartRev was the only ever-approved vanilla map editing pack and that was only because the developers of that were practically in the development friend circle anyways and coaxed permission out of every mapper.
Ive had to run hacky add-on scripts to modify the behavior of existing addons because directly editing them without permission is forbidden for some reason.

im shit at both games but i had more fun on SRB2K than Reddit Racers nobody asked for fucking melee level autistic mechanics in a fucking kart racer

go look up SRB2K’s github repo if you want to see how derelict it became after 1.3 because they went full development bunker on a hidden closed branch for ring racers.

so, in other words, they started working on a different game and left the original (OPEN SOURCE) game's code available for anyone to work with
what's the issue here

Good for you, I have more fun with Ring Racers.
Go make an SRB2K thread if you want to talk about SRB2K and how much you wish Ring Racers was SRB2K.

I asked for those mechanics.

i still remember when RR was at release on multiplayer, everyone roasting every single mechanic, amazing way to kill your own playerbase built over the years with SRB2K, no one can do better than chris chan wannabes

RR development should have been open since the beginning, there is no reason to be secretive other than circlejerk bullshit, furfag niggers need to burn in hell

Ring Racers kicks so much ass. After getting into it I can't go back to any other kart racer, they're just boring by comparison.

there is no reason to be secretive other than circlejerk bullshit,

thread shows clearly that as soon as they stop being secretive they can a bunch of retards who don't know how to behave going THIS IS SHIT YOU'RE ALL FAGGOT KIKES KILL YORSELF AND MAKE THE GAME FOR MEEEE NOT FOR YOURSELF

lol

Why would they make it open when people call them furfag niggers when they don't.

Well they made a game for themselves and no one else for sure

It's for me, so I like it.
It's also clearly for other people in this thread who also like it.
Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it's for "no one else".

Master mode is beating my ass.

release consistent updates

suddenly go radio silent and start working on something else

ok fair enough can you at least allow these major issues with your original version to be fixed

”no we are keeping it dogshit intentionally because we want it to be as bad as possible when compared to our v2 magnum opus”

and by the way tough luck if you want to host your own master server have fun figuring it out

and we’ll still ban you for fixing our fundamentallt broken basegame maps

yeah i dunno you tell me

oh ok fair enough im sorry anon

some evolutions are dead ends
following through on them is hubris

i really think contemporary gamedev is at a turning point in understanding the difference between depth and complexity, it's a very important lesson to learn

Everyone shut the fuck up 2.4 is adding friendmod as an official mode

We are so back

I never played SRB2K and have only played RR, what's friendmod?

mb.srb2.org/addons/friendmod.2398/
Team-based gameplay modifier. The guy who made it is one of the lead devs on Ring Racers.

What do we know about 2.4 so far?

Proximity voice chat is the big one. I know they've teased other things but they're being deliberately coy with it.

physics are being tweaked again

item balance is being completely overhauled with some kind of checkpoint and EXP system that will break every single custom map

new 1v1 duel mode

proximity-based voice chat

character limit upped to 1024

new cup

at least one track based on an old doom Deathmatch mod

better button prompt icons (actual mash icon instead of the shoulder button one, specific buttons doing the "four dots in a diamond" thing)

vector is probably getting added, finally

dead line has been completely replaced with a different track because the physics tweaks broke it and nobody likes it enough to maintain it

mega aqua lake is getting redesigned which sucks for me because i actually like it, but most people don't

a bunch of shit is getting opened up to Lua so that modders have more freedom to work

Oh, also,

players will apparently have a reason to collect more of the spray cans after the initial 100 for the palettes

a couple of the challenges are being reworked or toned down (pulseman's is getting replaced entirely)

they're removing the spring in match race since there's a way to reach every single spray can/secret/shrine without it

>item balance is being completely overhauled with some kind of checkpoint and EXP system that will break every single custom map

Interesting, I wonder what direction they're going to take this in I didn't think the item balancing was that bad at all. Also EXP...? Hm

I think the power items ATM are far too polarizing, shrink lasers happen to often, and some multi items like quad orbi are hell to be near players with them.

Also EXP...?

They've been keeping the details of it pretty sparse, but the way it seems to work is that playing aggressively earns EXP, which gets cashed in at checkpoints for more aggressive items, while playing passively results in you getting more defensive and comeback stuff. Apparently the problem the devs were seeing the most was that the design of item balance before means people who are newest to the game (and thus playing the worst) ended up playing the hardest version of the game since most of the strongest comeback items are designed in such a way that the game is WAY harder to control (i.e. invincibility making you ungodly fast, garden top being garden top, etc)

Also, EXP bonus seems to be replacing Ring Bonus in Singleplayer, presumably so people stop feeling bad about burning to 0 rings for a final push at the end of a race.

Man that logo really captures the 90s Sonic aesthetic so well. This is 100% the logo of a 32X game.

Does Anon Babble still have a sometimes populated SRB2Kart server? Not Ring Racers, specifically 1.X SRB2K? I loved Kart but have no interest in Ring Racers whatsoever, it looks like it took a great, simple racing game and overloaded it with gimmicks. Watching the devs get pissed over all criticisms, even polite constructive criticism, doesn't make me want to check it out any more.

Anon Babble still has SRB2K threads, you should go there

I like the special stages.

This is pretty interesting, I hope it works out well. I wish I knew how Discord worked better, I have no idea how to see all the devleaks but everything sounds pretty cool I hope it's out soon

character limit upped to 1024

This one is the big one for me. I treat Ring Racers like MUGEN and throw in a bunch of characters I like and the current limit is really small. Waiting until this update to get back into playing it.

I hope they finally delete this horrid creation.

ITEMVLVR.png - 50x50, 1.48K

Nah, the bumper is fucking based.
That does remind me, though: I forgot another change:

Instawhip can now steal items

>Instawhip can now steal items

edit.jpg - 462x580, 186.61K

They haven't clarified whether it applies to items people are actively using/holding as far as I've seen, but we know for a fact that if you instawhip a bumper on the ground in 2.4, it steals the bumper.

NTA, but sliptide in v1 was a beginner's trap and was just sub-optimal 99% of the time. In any situation you'd think to use it, brakedrifting was faster than it since you'd get a boost after.

I also went a long time not using it in DRRR at first because I was used to it being useless.

Replying to:

I absolutely adore what they've done with sliptide in Ring Racers. It went from a near-objectively worse option in 90% of scenarios to a genuinely interesting choice between a slow turn and more sustained driftboost or a quick turn and quick wavedash boost.

I remember seeing a post saying besides proximity voice chat they were working an another “big thing” they weren’t sure if they could get working or not. Did anyone ever work out what it was?

Fucking huh? I recall sliptide being near mandatory whenever you happened to get a full boost, unless the track had REALLY obliging turns.

I miss when casuals were dismissed and made fun of instead of whatever this thread is

I don't recognize the thing above the lightning bolt.

It's one of the stars from Kirby Air Ride.

Was it the stupid voltage mechanic they're working on to add to the list of too many features?

Swerve Star, which is what the Top's controls are based on

I have no idea what that is so quite possibly. What’s that all about?

I think the Voltage mechanic is part of the whole aggressive items thing mentioned in

Friendmod is fucking dogshit and the fact that they chose ripping off KartRider 1:1 instead of tweaking Team Sonic Racing's team mode really tells you everything.

In kart it was generally better to just start your drift a bit earlier instead of trying to sliptide, the speed loss from the lack of boost really messes up your rhythm.
If you're in a heavily modded meme speed server there might be more use cases, but with vanilla physics there's basically none.

shart krew devs not like the SRB2K label

Understandable. THIS is the original SRB.
Why would you want to forever be tied to the name when it can be traced back to flash, and definitely not even a good one?
This shit is like an anchor around 2's identity... they're so different nobody would even want to associate them. After making the switch to karts, they were STILL associated with this shit.

I swear to god I attached the image.

free for all racing except now 1st, 2nd and potentially 3rd and 4th have no personal incentive to disrupt each other so they instead form an impenetrable front run defense

Its, dogshit.
Team Sonic Racing is better.

Okay, that's about what I thought. I was talking about on tracks where it's either sliptide or slow way down to make a turn at all, not something relatively simple like your webm.

Example?

It's been awhile, but I recall Kodachrome Void basically demanding you be glued to your line or you were going to bonk 3 consecutive walls. That might have been it being a visual clusterfuck though.
