The answer is Renoir is protecting the child, and to reconcile with the child, he had to be defeated.
The actual Fracture is the war between child and Adult Verso. The actual gommage is Verso dying and the lights going out.
The only conflict is can Verso accept forgiveness or be trapped by guilt to the very end.

Maybe follow the writers leading up the the fire. I wouldn’t mind Alicia many years in the future either. Just don’t start with Alicia moping around and then painting a canvas or something. The only way to have 2 take place in the same universe is circumstances making it necessary to either enter another painting or even a Writer's story somehow, if that's how Writers work. Either to uncover secrets or something else.

New story, but they can use the same world/concepts.
They could easily explore what the Writers are, their conflict with Painters, the other worlds made by Painters, focus on Clea's personal war, hell, they could outright make the main character a painter, hopping between new worlds they've made in an effort to find some kind of answer to something or find someone lost in the world of paintings. They could just make a totally new world/story as well; I'd imagine they could come up with plenty.
Regardless of what they do, the only mistake they could make is outright continuing Maelle/Alicia's story. It's done; things were explained, conflicts resolved, and both endings have a clear, definitive message/outcome. Hell, outside of the family itself, all characters you encounter are either wiped away or put into a pseudo-paradise that will likely melt over time. But we don't need to see that; there's not much point.
