Book fans exhaustively debate definitive translations...

book fans exhaustively debate definitive translations, meticulously comparing versions like "Penguin Classics" or "Oxford World's Classics." They scrutinize every nuanced word choice, often even championing specific translators such as Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky for Russian classics, Ann Goldstein for Elena Ferrante's works, etc...

this debate is socially acceptable and encouraged

when it comes to video game translations, the acceptable normie opinion is that translation differences are largely meaningless, and players should be happy with what they get

if you dare criticize a scecific translation you're considered autistic or an "alt-right nazi"

HUH????

translators.png - 320x304, 164.78K

if you're too stupid to learn the original language then im not interested in debating with you

Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky

People who champion these two are fucking retards.

Fuck you.
I'm not learning hungarian just to play Felvidek.

file.jpg - 616x353, 93.22K

I don't think normies even know about translations, unironically. like joe rogan didn't even know marcus aurelius didn't write in english
I've never even seen someone called a nazi for criticizing a translation, but it is pretty autistic

joe rogan didn't even know marcus aurelius didn't write in english

lmao this can't be real

Japanese will always be stilted because it is a stilted language in comparison to English. Which sounds better:

"EHHH? What is interrupting me at this important time?"

"Aw come on, we were getting to the good part!"

No language is 100% translatable. You always have to compromise, especially when it's something as foreign as Nipponese. That doesn't excuse all the leftist shit they put in there

No one even knows that most JP games are translated by the same like 3 people.

Pretty much this just look at Dante's inferno

This. Even the best book translations have to leave out something because it literally loses context if you directly translate it.

Note: I'm not excusing vidya translations the vast amount are fucking terrible but still leaving shit out is given

like joe rogan didn't even know marcus aurelius didn't write in english

lol

The first, because it lacks the annoying sarcasm.
I agree that a Japanese translation might be improved by spicing it up a bit, but people take it way too far.

They scrutinize every nuanced word choice

They don't. It often just boils down to the vibes, how well it flows, nobody really cares about specific word choices. Maybe with the exception of the opening lines; mother/maman in Stranger or anger/wrath in the Iliad. There are hundreds of thousands of words in novels, you can't scrutinise every single one of them.

I've never even seen someone called a nazi for criticizing a translation

That's because you get called a chud these days.

You don't even know english, ESL-kun.

Learn the language fags are just woketards trying excuse shitty translations, aren't they?

Because books are written by literate people while videogames are just badly written by default so translation matter less

Not to mention videogames are 99% dialogues, the hard part of a translation is always the narration.

The context is from the new Yakuza spinoff game where the character is in a humorous scenario where he believes a cat can talk to him and is flirting with him.

I'll take the literal translation, thank you.

Purple prose good

Reminder that Shakespeare was written in the common vernacular of the day and was the equivalent of Marvel movies of the time

prose

Retard.

Yup

Because people who translate books act in good faith and do it because they like the source materials. They often consult the original author for meaning of certain passages. This is because literature is seen as art.
People who translate vidya act in bad faith, hate the source material and are paid a pittance. This is because vidya is not seen as art but as content, entertainment.

This
Vidya writing is dogshit anyway

its because videogame writing is shit either way

This. There is a small amount of retards who want incomprehensible literal translations but most people are fine with localizations if they preserve original meaning and don't insert translator's weird ideology into the script.

100% as intended

100% as intended is the original language.

This. You can translate as best as possible to 1:1, but intentionally mistranslating is just outright dumb.

You're wrong because you've arrived at the right conclusion for the incorrect reason. Japanese isn't a stilted language, but the tonal indicators of Japanese don't translate to english. Shit like personal pronoun usage, verb usage, kanji usage, etc all that are literally not translatable, which causes overly literal translations to LOOK stilted because they lose all the nuance, which HAS to be reimplemented in localization. The problem comes in writers who think like you and take shit too far because they don't actually understand the language.

Always wondered why those jelly donuts looked kind of funny

Because books are written by literate people

lol
Getting the best 50 books in the last 300 years make it look like that, but the average author is about equally retarded as game devs

Talented translators work for major corporations, not entertainment companies. And then you know the sorts who are especially eager to take this work.

Why does everyone who learns Japanese turn into a gigantic cunt about it?

Autism things

They have to justify the time spent somehow.

Filtered. I bet you like Garnett

Agreed but to be more accurate I'm talking about good books and good games

Kill yourself

Being into video games and anime in current year without knowing Japanese is like being into philosophy and theology in the middle ages without knowing Latin and Greek. Even with translations you still wouldn't understand much.
The cuntness that you observe is fully borne of your ignorance and entitlement.

Dude even the translations of the Bible are fucked

Translator loved Jesus' character arc so much he brought him back from the dead

You're not a weeb. You're a woketard.

you'll never understand the intended nuances and tones of the author if you don't speak the language the work was written in, if you read a translation you'll always be reading an inferior watered down version that either just conveys dry information or completely changes the tone and nuances so they don't even reflect the original work anymore

You don't have access to such information.

This isn't even true.

WorksCited.png - 750x738, 168.65K

You're being disingenuous because you disagree with him about politics?

looks like the game was made in slovakian though, I'm not sure why they went with the hungarian name of the region, maybe I guess they wanted to make a medieval game set in slovakia but that region was just part of hungary until ww1

>>>>implying KJV isn't the Word of God

do you fucking retards realize that "as intended" means to make the meaning as close as possible to the original and not whatever the fuck american "localizers" do where they might as well have rewritten the fucking scripts
no one is implying that you can make it have the exact same effect as it had in the original you troglodyte

t. literally translates games

you should start with improving your reading comprehension in english first stupid nigger, I'm saying that you should learn the original language or you're a stupid nigger and you deserve whatever slop is thrown in front of you

you should probably get fired, you sound fucking psychotic

Get some reading comprehension

you should start with improving your reading comprehension

you first dumbass

you'll never understand the intended nuances and tones of the author if you don't speak the language the work was written in, if you read a translation you'll always be reading an inferior watered down version that either just conveys dry information or completely changes the tone and nuances so they don't even reflect the original work anymore

this was never the problem, vast majority of people don't give a shit
most people don't give a fuck that you can't "understand the intended nuances and tones of the author" in a translation
the issue as stated in OP is that "localizers" write shit that might as well be fanfiction

You guys can't even understand nuances of your own language.

the problem is you ALWAYS need to make drastic changes when you translate Japanese to English, unless you're one of those fag weebs who thinks "Gatsu" is acceptable, so there was always room for women and men with the cowardly souls of women to go too far with it

you first stupid nigger, I disregarded op's argument because it doesn't matter what translation you read, it'll never be the same as the original anyways, if you want to read the original then learn the language it was written in, if you don't care then just eat whatever slop you're given

Gatsu > guts

How? In what way?
You it was just Miura saying "Guts" but in a Japanese accent, right?

And in any case, you can get the same meaning across in multiple different languages by importing the specific concepts and relations used.
You're almost certainly not Finnish, but you're using a language construct native to the Finnish language. You can and should do this for all constructs of all foreign languages for best results when importing works.

hogyhogy?

responds to OP

actually I wasn't responding to OP

stop humiliating yourself retard

jokesonthem.png - 728x501, 68.33K

holy shit, it's not just reading comprehension, you don't even know what words mean, retard jeet

how am I being disingenuous?

the word of god changed 1000 years afterward because reasons

No.

truth is video games mostly attract plebs

Wrong, Baudelaire improved on Poe.

vidya translations is meaningless because video games are not art and there is nothing of value lost in translation.

You need to justify learning a pretty useless language outside of one (1) country and some mid vidya

translating japanese 1:1 would be stupid you have to translate into natural english, 1:1 would be completely unintelligible with all the passive language for politeness and double negatives etc.
there is only an issue if you add in some gay zoomer slang or libtard political issue that wasnt in the material in the slightest and you just wanted to force something gay in

aka changed

You're all about the faithful translations until it comes to Pokemon names.

the only supporting evidence you have is your fee fees

Why are incels too retarded to learn Japanese?

there is a big difference between フシギダネ being called bulbasaur instead of strange-seed and calling it queersaur

you can make changes, no one cares about using different words to describe something or even completely changing the structure of a sentence (or even an entire conversation for that matter)
the issue is "localization" where the original meaning gets completely fucking twisted for no reason other than to feed the localizer ego
an example of that would be from a game where you select 2 characters(I think it was blue lock)
in JP version she says

I'm teaming up with you? Heh, its strange isn't it?

while in EN version she says

Team up with him!? UGH... ok... lets do this...

how can you possibly justify the EN translation? If you were presented this without context you'd think that those are 2 completely different characters. There is no reason it couldn't have been translated to have the same meaning as the original

it sounds like you agree with that anon and don't care about faithful translations of pokemon names

you'll always be reading an inferior watered down version

so suddenly the point isn't that its worse but that its different?

You made a claim and didn't provide any evidence
There is evidence that the Bible translations have been faithful for the past two millennia. Like the Dead Sea Scrolls, new testament fragments and even some complete bibles preserved by African Churches.

completely changes the tone and nuances so they don't even reflect the original work anymore

the point is that it's not the same, and therefore worse, write your own book then if you think you're so smart

yeah its fine to use a slightly different name that sounds better in english as long as you dont make it cringe zoomer slang or some personal gay political issue

I chuckled, that's a pretty funny edi-

loot it up

it's a real cover

to be fair its supposed to be games/tv-series for kids, in which case I think it makes much more sense to call a pokemon "Murkrow" instead of "Yamikarasu"

Is there a patch to play FFIX steam version with more direct translation? I saw screenshots that made me believe they butchered the translation.

90% of shakespeares characters talk mad shit and crack jokes constantly.
the people who think its too high brow and smart would actually be the ones who most enjoy it, and the people who actually enjoy it are usually dickheads trying to seem smarter but enjoy the same shit as everyone else.

lol

lmao even

You either speak only one language or started learning japanese 2 weeks ago and think you are hot shit
If there is a will there's a way, even if its literally impossible to get to the "same level" as the original(since obviously you have to change it) the idea that you will be left with a "inferior watered down version" is idiotic

The irony being all the main mascot Pokemon for the gen usually keep their japanese name.

There was some fag.

He went out to touch grass

After he school shooter'd Troy

There was a storm and shit and stuff

And he had real niggas with him

But his niggas were dumb, they eat beef

Zeus was a real retard about it

Now I'll tell you about this nigga

Donate to my patreon.

I spoke 4 languages by the time I was 20, you're just dumb and will have to accept your life as a pleb

and yet you haven't mastered a single one, pretty sad really

cope all you want pleb

I spoke 4 languages by the time I was 20

sure you did mutt-kun

When it comes to book, every aspect of a translated work you engage with is filtered through the lens of translation.
In video games, the parts that are translated often have as much value as a tissue drenched in semen.

Anyways, the idea of a "100% as intended" translation is retarded for any games that aren't for literal children (TL Note: 'literal children' is Japanese for 'kodomo').
Most things with serious literary writing (i.e., not anything serious like contracts or official correspondences) tend to use the language in more interesting ways than one may expect. Here's an example; someone is speaking in a ye olde English style is a pretty obvious one. Japan also has antiquated styles of speech to draw on and often it just gets brought over as that (not even remotely the same thing culturally as ye olde English is often viewed as Shakespearian whereas antiquated Japanese can be viewed as romantic or bittersweet, but whatever).
But here's a deeper example.
In English, when someone is dying, they may say, "I'll be looking down on all of you from above." But, the phrase "I'll be looking down on all of you" can hold a dual meaning in a more comedic sense, where it then becomes that character is dying and will always be 'looking down on them'- both the respectful 'in death' kind as well as the insulting, mocking kind.
How do you translate that? How do you translate language specific things like that?
You really can't. Even the best Japanese to English TLs stumble into this and can't bring over Japanese flavor- some games like Danganronpa use really SIMPLE Japanese, you could read that entire series after at most a year and a bit of real study, but despite that, it's not a game you can really translate because it's drenched in those nuances that can't be brought over, most of the humour is in the quirks of character speech.

Sometimes this improves the perception of games, like with Higurashi and Umineko, which read as childish in Japanese.

thinks I'm an amerimutt, or even a native english speaker

lmao you played yourself, can't talk shit about me being an esl now that you assumed I'm a native english speaker

You need to justify learning a pretty useless language outside of one (1) country and some mid vidya

Japanese tech companies love having guys who know Japanese at their North American branches.

pic

You're joking, but some Ukrainian poet did exactly that with "Aeneid" back in XVIII century, translating it completely into Ukrainian dialect and turning characters into Cossacks. It even had two animated adaptations.

Can someone tell me what the fuck is going on in this thread and what I'm supposed to gather from this thread? Thank you

hohols are basically niggers so it checks out

Translators are retards. 99% of everyone agree with it. Especially woke translators. Now we've surpassed that argument six years ago, and we're mostly talking about Shakespear, and the Odyssey, and stuff like that. Translators are forgotten because all american translators must die, that's more or less agreed, signed on, recognized, thank God AI will soon make all the woke translators homeless. It can't be happening sooner.

Tell me boutta the sigma gigachad
O gyatt, how he got skibidi'd
When he mogged bussin' Troy,
All the NPCs he ratio'd,
The Ohio ass Ls he suffered,
How he worked to keep
His main character aura.
He couldn't save his besties
From being vibe checked,
Lowkey they were all cooked.
Now, looksmaxxed gyatt
Put the fries in the bag.

what version of The Odyssey should I read?

Fitzgerald, Lattimore or Fagles

Multi-year proxy war between people who refuse to learn japanese, people who ""learned"" japanese, and trannyslators who rewrite scripts.
These threads have been a circlejerk for just as many years because anyone sane knows that localizers changing the script in any significant manner is bad, so people instead argue about whether they should yell into wind about translations being bad and hope they magically improve, or learn japanese and side-step the entire issue. People will argue that you shouldn't /have/ to learn japanese to enjoy a japanese game because the translation should be accurate, and they're right, but that's simply not the case right now. Literally no one is pressuring translators at all in the public sphere and there is no reason to expect the current trajectory of poor quality translations to change in the near future.

depends on how much you read and how comfortable you are with poetry. considering you're on Anon Babble I recommend E.V. Rieu
my favorite is Fagles if you are interested in verse though

Fit

Sing in me, Muse, and through me tell the story
of that man skilled in all ways of contending,
the wanderer, harried for years on end,
after he plundered the stronghold
on the proud height of Troy.
He saw the townlands
and learned the minds of many distant men,
and weathered many bitter nights and days
in his deep heart at sea, while he fought only
to save his life, to bring his shipmates home.
But not by will nor valor could he save them,
for their own recklessness destroyed them all—
children and fools, they killed and feasted on
the cattle of Lord Hêlios, the Sun,
and he who moves all day through heaven
took from their eyes the dawn of their return.
Of these adventures, Muse, daughter of Zeus,
tell us in our time, lift the great song again.

Lat

Tell me, Muse, of the man of many ways, who was driven
far journeys, after he had sacked Troy’s sacred citadel.
Many were they whose cities he saw, whose minds he learned of,
many the pains he suffered in his spirit on the wide sea,
struggling for his own life and the homecoming of his companions.
Even so he could not save his companions, hard though
he strove to; they were destroyed by their own wild recklessness,
fools, who devoured the oxen of Helios, the Sun God,
and he took away the day of their homecoming. From some point
here, goddess, daughter of Zeus, speak, and begin our story.

Fag

Sing to me of the man, Muse, the man of twists and turns …
driven time and again off course, once he had plundered
the hallowed heights of Troy.
Many cities of men he saw and learned their minds,
many pains he suffered, heartsick on the open sea,
fighting to save his life and bring his comrades home.
But he could not save them from disaster, hard as he strove—
the recklessness of their own ways destroyed them all,
the blind fools, they devoured the cattle of the Sun
and the Sungod blotted out the day of their return.
Launch out on his story, Muse, daughter of Zeus,
start from where you will—sing for our time too.

depends on how much you read

I read tons of visual novels, like 20 hours a week.
Real books? Like 300 pages every 6 months.

and how comfortable you are with poetry

I liked Edgar Allan Poe's poems.

no reason to expect the current trajectory of poor quality translations to change in the near future.

AI
I

It will sort itself out, eventually, my friend. The technology is there. They will screech like vampires first left out to the sun, they will hate and impotently rage: they will scream, they will sneak around like rats, muster their cancerous strength, bribe and blackmail. But translators will die. Isn't it a most excellent day to be alive?

Book fans eat shit

Fans of Japanese media understand all translation is bad

All the NPCs he ratio'd,

KEK

God, I hate zoomer slang.

Even people who know Japanese have a problem with the trannyslators since western "sensibilities" bleed into Japanese content itself.

Glad this is getting posted again
I’m fed up with the retard that keeps making these threads and arguing that 1:1 machine translation is acceptable

a rigid machine translation is acceptable over injected wokeshit desu

Hello, retard!

I'm skipping the dialogue either way so it makes zero difference.

t. Biggest cunt in the thread

I dont need to learn languages when I can just use AI to translate.

multiple dubs used to be the standard

French, Italian, German, Russian, Spanish

now its all just English with half assed subs

Gaming has regressed

Mate, he's joking. Are you retarded?

Nah, he's right, you faggots are lazy.
All the resources you need to learn Japanese are free and right at your finger tips.
University level education materials? Free.
Programs for studying kanji? Free.
Hiragana/katakana memorization tools? Dozens of identical resources for it.
Things actually in Japanese? Fucking everywhere for free, from books to movies to anime to manga to games. Games themselves will often just come with Japanese language options even for things not made in Japan.

And all of you fags go on about how you're "real weebs" and how hardcore you are, and you fail to cross this singular bridge that has no obstacles on it whatsoever.

The Septuagint predates Christianity, so we know the Old Testament is the same as it was 2000 years ago.

I don't get it. What's the joke? Why that cover?

there is no joke, unless you think he actually doing the "pretending to be retarded" bit during a conversation
