Magic: The Final Fantasy Gathering Arena is a video game

Magic: The Gathering Arena is a video game released in 2018 that still gets supported to this day. In two weeks, it's gonna get a bunch of new cards and they're all based on Final Fantasy. I'm gonna post all the relevant cards that will be coming that have been previewed in the past week.

file.png - 1640x680, 1.09M

Starting with Final Fantasy 1. It gets two new cards shown, but they aren't anything special. The only legendary character previewed so far is Garland/Chaos. Final Fantasy 2, meanwhile, is the only game in the series that didn't get a single new card revealed this week. In fact, it didn't get a new card revealed last week either! Things have been very static over here, which I guess is not that surprising cause now that I think about it, I believe it's the least popular game from the first few. It still got two legendary characters previewed so far, though: Firion and The Emperor of Palamecia

1.png - 1340x936, 1.6M

Then, we have Final Fantasy 3. It gets represented by having a full cycle of 5 crystals, one for each color. We already saw the black one and now we get the other 4.

Both the Darkness Crystal and the Earth Crystal seem extremely powerful to me. And I expect to see the two of them in competitive decks before they rotate out.

3.png - 2686x936, 3.14M

Final Fantasy 5 doesn't get much. But it gets something.

5.png - 1344x936, 1.54M

4 mana do nothing

Gets beat by rats

Now Final Fantasy 6 continues getting a lot. Clearly a lot of fans of the game in the design team. And we haven't even gotten Sabin yet!

Six.jpg - 4703x936, 1.29M

Final Fantasy 7 is kind of bare this week, but that's because it already got a shitload of cards shown in the first two weeks. 709952918

SHUT UP SHUT UP SHUT UP IT'S NO CLAIR OBSCUR YOU CAN'T TALK ABOUT IT BUY AN AD TO TALK ABOUT THE GAME ON THE BOARD FOR GAMES IT'S NOT MY CLAIR OBSCUR

Most joyful update of this thread: Final Fantasy 9 gets a shitload more cards. This is what I'm talking about.

Nine.jpg - 4028x1872, 2.04M

Final Fantasy 10 gets a bunch of new cards and half of them are Blitzball related kek A-anon... I liked Clair Obscur... ;_;

Apparently people are mad about all this crossover stuff in Magic? Why? Did it have preestablished lore and a store or something? I know that it had themed decks which may have had stories to them, but afaik that's a thing with any tcg and there's generally no to little connection between deck themes.

Final Fantasy 11 gets thrown a bone but it has been pretty sparse overall. Getting completely mogged by 14. Then again, every other game is getting mogged by 14 too.

11.png - 1344x936, 1.76M

It's either MTG's Renaissance or it's MTG's downfall. It hasn't been decided which it is just yet.

12 is also too sparse in representation for my taste so far. Hope it gets a big boost next week like 9 got this week.

12.png - 1344x1871, 3.15M

Usually the crossover stuff is shit for commanderbabs or just "card skins", this is an actual expansion

13

13.png - 1344x936, 1.98M

I continue grumbling while Final Fantasy 14 continues being the game that gets the most representation (I never played it). It has an absurd 31 cards about it shown so far. It has even more than I initially thought. I thought "Ultima" was a Final Fantasy 16 card based on its promo art which was the only thing we saw at the time, but turns out this too is another one that is technically 14, so I've reposted it here.

Well, I don't know who these people are, but I can pretty confidently tell you Gaius van Baelsar's card is dogshit. Gets completely mogged by Raubahn.

14.jpg - 4704x936, 1.26M

Ok that alexander is a fucking travesty. 4/3 for a Kaiju sized creature is ridiculous and flying? Did these people even play FF9?

Magic the Gathering is now effectively western Weiss Schwarz with the occasional original set. That's depressing
11 and 14 have the most shit you can pull from so it makes sense that they have the highest amount of representation, doubly so since every 14 job can be made into a hero token card.

Final Fantasy XV
Oddly enough, a The Regalia card in MTG doesn't even feel that out of place anymore. Literally two sets ago we were in a set that was focused on a racing event. This Prompto shit, on the other hand, definitely feels out of place. Not a fan.

Five Teen.jpg - 4703x936, 1.17M

I'm still pissed over duskmourn

(I never played it)

You should try it one day, it's not that bad

there are some many ways they could have made Steiner and this is the best they could come up with?

No, Final Fantasy 14 is FUCKING BORING unless you pay to get to the good parts (skipping 90 hours of the story). At that point, just watch a silent playthrough on YouTube.

And finally, FF 16.
I do think it's amusing how Wizards have managed to strike a very nice balance with 16. They don't want it to overtake the set, since it's obviously a very nostalgia focused set and 16 just came out, but to make up for the relatively few cards it has, over 90% of them have felt really impactful and strong to me. It's a nice way of shilling 16 while still making sure the set isn't about it. Smart move. There are still 82 cards left to preview. I intend on on making another thread next Thursday and then one final one the day after, when we get the full gallery.

16.jpg - 2016x1870, 1.02M

I just don't want to play MMOs, to be honest. They didn't get me by calling it 11 and 14. I will simply not play them.

Clive's Hideaway

Has Hideaway

heh

I'm a Draftchad and occasional Standard player. That Edgar sucks balls and should be in your gay commander set and you know it.

Crystal Fragments is strong as hell
Short Sword with late game upside

I didn't argue that he shouldn't be in commander I'm just saying Modern sucks ass

I don't know, other than Stiltzkin, Vivi and Zidane, these IX designs all seem so uninspired to me

Garnet is made to be used with the summons so she's alright imo

But I didn't say anything about Modern
Edgar is unplayable in Standard too
And it will probably be playable in draft but it's not gonna be a high pick. Every other legendary VI creature so far is a higher pick

not the Anon you're replying to, I wouldn't encourage you to anyway unless you were interested in MMOs you can just watch a playthrough on Youtube if you only want the story as the game uses similar content modelling as gachashit.

Playing through the story is mostly braindead because story quests are just uninteractive visual novels for the most part broken up by either extremely easy solo duties or braindead linear dungeons that you can now play single player with bots. Extra content is either timegated, extremely limited and grindy, is no longer current so you may not be able to find players to do it with or only learnable within a specific time frame because afterwards people will only make and join clear/farm parties and nothing else.

Can't speak for 11 as the game in its current state is made just for people to be able to playthrough for the sake of experiencing the content rather than as a dedicated mmo due to its age and the fact that the story is officially over and there will be no new expansions

Garnet is cool the way she plays with lore counters. Agreed otherwise. Kuja owes me sex btw

gr.png - 318x278, 65.24K

well just be a commander chad

You're not real magic

Kuja.png - 657x925, 1.13M

when they showing up

Holy shit that colossal dreadmaw is pushed, I've seen worse commons dominate draft metas.

4/3 for a Kaiju sized creature is ridiculous

Anon, it turns your creatures invincible for two turns and then gives you a free swing with them. And it's a low cost efficient card that can be turned into Alexander later.
It's a good design. It might still be OP at 4/3, depending on how the meta shakes out. Also, the average summon in this game only attacks for 1 turn. The power is barely relevant.

XIV is not only Squeenix's biggest money maker by multiple orders of magnitude, but it's routinely been proven that other than FF7, it's easily their most popular game. It also has the most content out of any Final Fantasy title without any modicum of competition, and has references and representation of almost every other FF title inside of it(There's even a The Last Remnant armor set). It's odd that people are still surprised that it's always heavily represented in ensemble/collaboration works like this.

file.png - 640x873, 671.62K

XII only has 7 cards

Doesn't even get lands

KWAB

It's not fucking fair. There hasn't been a FF as good as 12 since. Fucking plebs.

I'm expecting a Rydia card for sure. The others, not so much.

i bought a box to gamble

If Rydia shows up, she will be a card focused on lore counters. But that might also be why she doesn't show up. We already have Yuna, Garnet and the FFXVI sorcery. Rydia could be overkill.

i liek the art tarkir is cool too

idiotfroge.png - 490x479, 343.55K

Hehehehehe sucker

file.png - 739x415, 600.23K

It also has a bunch of game devs in the industry who play it I know the devs at Bohemia at Digital Extremes and From Soft all play FFXIV to this day the raids help in team building along with a game to wind down in the evening with a game that isn't related to what they're working on.

It wouldn't surprise me. XIV is an extremely social game compared to most MMOs and I know that people just pick and choose a difficulty range of content they want to play and engage with it at their leisure. It's still massively popular despite Dawntrail being its biggest fuckup and the largest drop in players they've ever seen.

*Makes you feel like the most ultimate wizard of all time in you're path*

You play Ultima on your opponent's upkeep and it's GG right there

Holy Shit.png - 1344x936, 2.5M

I never noticed this before but Teferi, Time Raveler's art is awful. It looks like his face is photoshopped into his head. They didn't have to do my brother like that.

draft chad

Paypig more like
I've been playing with the new cards already, because I'm a proxy chad. And my pod is too.

Will they ever make an Asian version of teferi? Or maybe Latino

Nothing wrong with proxying and draft testing, I do it occasionally, but drafting a set when only half of its cards have been previewed is degenerate behavior. Have some fucking patience.

I wasn't mad until they forced these sets into Standard. I don't want to be playing Sephiroth equipped with Spider Man's Symbiote that gets blocked by Aang. It's cringe.
Now, I was also mad that there were a bunch of shit sets lately that feel like they're crossover shit without being crossover shit (There's a set that is essentially wacky racers without the license), but that's still preferable to this. And ideally, neither should happen.

I was gonna play this FF set, but now that they forced it into Standard, I won't. I ended up spending all my gold and gems on Tarkir instead.

It’s a mix of crossovers coming at the expense of original settings and a lot of them reeking of forced marketing. Most people don’t mind the Lord of the Rings or Final Fantasy crossovers as much because they fit MtG’s general vibe and you can pretend they’re just another plane in the multiverse. You can’t do that with Spider-Man and Spongebob.

IMG_3203.jpg - 672x936, 168.34K

Nobody proxies drafts, you mongoloid. I'm a commander chad and my friends too. Go paypig some more, draft fag

I want to create a moogle deck. There are only a few moogle based cards. I hope they add more.

Commander chad

Post discarded

When you were talking about pods, I thought you were talking about draft. Stop using draft terminology for your gay non magic format.

Mtg was always just pic related and now mtg lore retards are mad that they finally got the license instead of having the cheap knock offs.

mtg.jpg - 1503x1135, 255.84K

Keep seething, pod isn't a term exclusively used for drafts, mongoloid. Your meltdown has been hilarious so far. Keep going.

Wdym?
This is way better than the infinity glove

Image-2.png - 223x311, 123.17K

You don't know what you're talking about

Cool cherrypicking

They're just mad that Shakespeare did not get his own card or maybe even set and is just in flavor text so far.

U mad as fuck right now. mtg lore has always sucked.

with the occasional original set

It's bad but not that bad. We just got Tarkir and are getting Lorwyn against next year. It's probably gonna balance out to 3 original sets a year, which isn't great but it's definitely not complete doom territory either.

It's bad but not that bad.

It's so fucking bad your brain erased REMEMBER THE 80s and COWBOY YAHOOO RACECAR sets

s-l400.jpg - 287x400, 35.94K

MTG's lore is inconsistent and a mish mash of ideas that sometime work and sometime don't, but from the very beginning, it has decidedly felt like Magic. Sometimes they fuck up with shit like New Capenna or Karlov Manor or Kaladesh. Sometimes they hit a homerun with shit like Zendikar, Innistrad or Tarkir. Sometimes you get a mixed bag with great ideas and some cringe thrown in, a recent example being Duskmourn, but its identity as a MTG take on something is never in question.

No one is talking about being some lorehead that knows the events of the story and the name and personalities of all the characters, but there is a cohesion that you get in Standard where the cards all feel like they belong in the same "universe". That gets destroyed when you start playing a game and you have Cloud vs Aragorn equipped with Doc-Ock's claws. It's soulless. And this was solved the original way because these sets existed and no one cared but they were sectioned off into a different part of MTG and not just thrown into the mix with everything else.

mtg lore is amazing

images.jpg - 190x265, 12.9K

Windurst looking good, how much do you think it would cost to buy up all the FF11 cards only? I haven't dealt with magic in probably 22+ years.

I know nothing about Magic the Gathering but I know everything about Final Fantasy

Everyone I talk to about MtG sounds more bitter than a WoW player. So no I don't think I'll be buying any cardboard.

It's not that bad, dude. I love Nintendo

download-14.jpg - 190x265, 13.19K

Like I just said in another post, Duskmourn is a mixed bag set. I think the world building team did a tremendous job with it overall, even if they were weighed down by the designers that wanted to put in television, cheerleader, teenagers, baseball bats and ghostbuster proton pack cards in. Thunder Junction isn't very good because it's just one of the sets where they basically throw in every legendary from everywhere for a monster mash. Hat sets suck and I'm glad they're walking them back after 2025. Aetherdrift is the worst of them all.

V.png - 887x630, 1.12M

So far the only rare/mythic rare it as is a fairly unplayable 8 mana card. I expect that you'll be able to buy a single of all the FF XI cards that have been revealed so far with less than 5 bucks by 2026.

file.png - 648x923, 1.09M

Looks like it's based on Ai art. A lot of slop in duskmourn does.

That sounds great, I could live without AV if he's too pricy in the end. Big fan of the Windurst and Ronfaure art so far.

Don't listen to him Getting ahold of lotr cards now is ridiculously hard. Don't wait a year. Just see if it's in your budget to buy them

Market analysis reveals Final Fantasy VI/VII remain the most popular FFs in the MTG player age segment.

Getting ahold of lotr cards now is ridiculously hard

There's no way that's true. It was one of the most opened sets in MTG history.

Sure, retard. If you want worthless commons, it's cheap, I guess.

I was answering specifically to an anon that only wanted to buy a singles of every FF 11 card.

These are all the LOTR singles.

cardmarket.com/en/Magic/Products/Singles/The-Lord-of-the-Rings-Tales-of-Middle-earth

Pic related is all the cards that cost more than 1.20 bucks (Euros, but same shit)

Like I said, the only rare/mythic rare is Absolute Virtue, and it is absolutely not gonna be as played as Mount Doom or Witch-king of Angmar or Suaron, the Dark Lord or Gandalf the White, let alone as played as the absolute bombs like The One Ring and Orcish Bowmasters. At best, it will be like 3 bucks if Memeander fags really love it for some reason.

file.png - 1137x594, 57.54K

most iconic moment in the game is a white giant growth

Almost as funny as the FFX or XIV spoilers on reprints

To be fair this card is way better. That's an incredible combat trick.

Yeah, the serious fantasy tone is really rui-ACK!

Until end of turn, target creature gets +1/+0, indestructible, and "At the end of turn, exile this creature and put +1/+1 counters equal to its power on up to one target creature."

water crystal + mesmeric orb decks the opponent in at most 12 untaps

How is that the same a modern looking car? Keep in mind XV was criticised from the get go for not looking like a traditional FF.

Also the XIV collab trailer looks like some light novel Isekai shit. youtube.com/watch?v=_o-CtZGjJGc

Water Crystal + Brain Freeze requires less than half the storm count, and makes storming off easier.

Adamantoise is a neat design
Not playable, but neat

All of these are soulful af, Please let the ff9 remake be real.

are bloomburrow and FF in standard together? because scavengers talent will deck in max 10 sacrifices

Yeah, Bloomburrow only rotates out in 2026

quote is not "me? gongaga"

boring

XIV is like 4 or 5 games, Even just two cards per expansion would end up with an absurd number of cards, while also being underrepresented

all these double sided cards are cancer, they are stupid as fuck to play with in real life since magic doesn't have an extra deck like yugioh

Will mtg have a Clair Obscure Expedition 33 collab due to its popularity?

It's not all that popular yet. MTG only wants the normalfaggiest franchises. A single good game isn't enough.

Next crossover set is Spiderman(will be replaced by original cards with the same costs, colours and effects in Arena due to liscencing issues) and Avatar TLA

MTGchads have good taste, it turns out

PuPu card

335%2C506.png - 335x506, 211.82K

If FF X-2, FF XIII-2, XIII-3, Crisis Core and Strangers of Paradise weren't included because they are not main games, then the FF XIV expansions shouldn't be either

x.png - 976x850, 853.2K

Nah, Expedition 33 will by forgotten in 2 months

It's getting all the GOTY awards and it will deserve it. It's not getting forgotten until mid 2026.

FFXI would lose like 3 out of 6 cards if you didn't count expansions for it either lmao

It was very maligned at the time, but it shits all over every FF that came out since. Misunderstood classic.

If you hit your opponent with creatures for over a quarter of their life in a single turn, you get an equipment that gives you double strike

Holy winmore, Batman

Expedition 33 did to traditional FF style turnbased games what Baldurs Gate did to CRPGs.
It's a genre defining game, one of the top ten in a decade type game and will be remembered.
I genuinely feel sorry for people who refuse to play it from the FF community because they feel some sense of threat or disloyalty on the FF brand if they play Expedition 33.

Where's the Edward Chris von Muir card?

People shit on FF16, but it's the only real mainline FF game since 12

The demonic part of Duskmourn is really good, but the Stranger Things redditor funko pop side of it weighs it all down.

I think there's only one mythic left to be revealed. I bet it's gonna be Warrior of Light.

Of course. Except it's the XIV version >:^)

Wr.png - 400x600, 559.87K

AAAAIIIIIEEEEEEEEE

I hate that you might be right

Still no Cloud of Darkness

Still no Exdeath

Still no Job Change card that acts like Birthing Pod for equips

I'm a huge FF fucking dipshit and don't care about Magic.
If I delay playing Arena does it give me some sort of mobile game free rolls when I first login? I want to try and get even just a few cards, but I don't want to pay a single penny.
Or should I start it now and grind before the cards come out so I have something to get packs, if that's how this game works?

Help a FF fag get the most cards he can for free.

shb.png - 1500x2121, 2.33M

We might not get an Exdeath card... I hope I'm wrong.

file.png - 609x872, 805.62K

If I delay playing Arena does it give me some sort of mobile game free rolls when I first login?

Nope.

Or should I start it now and grind before the cards come out

Definitely.
I recommend you get in as soon as you can and start playing to get a bunch of gold. Do not spend any of it. Reroll any 500 gold quests for the chance that they become 750 gold quests instead. Also, every Tuesday through Thursday there are these free events which are usually very new player friendly. Not all of them, but it tends to be stuff that either gives you decks to play "for free" while in that event or alternatively events where the building cost is very cheap.

Also, since you're in it for FF, instead of opening packs, it might be better for you to use the gold to draft the Final Fantasy set. In my opinion, draft is easily the best way to play MTG, and after all, that way not only are you only getting the FF cards, same as if you only open FF packs, but you literally only play with and against FF cards. The way the pricing for that works is a pack costs 1000 gold and a draft is the equivalent of 3 packs and costs 10 000 gold each, so it might seem like a bad deal, but in draft you also choose which cards from the packs you get on a pick by pick basis. and the rewards for wins are more FF packs and gems which you can use to draft more.

In fact, before you use the gems to draft more, you can use those gems to buy the mastery pass without having to pay real dollars, which is gonna come with shit like the Moogle pet and a bunch of Final Fantasy avatars and card skins.

(1/2)

we get an Exdeath card

flips from full-armor Exdeath on front to half-tree Exdeath on back

the card is one of those three-sided fold-out cards like they have in Force of Will and Duel Masters with Neo Exdesth on the third side

Also, if you wait a bit (Usually a month), they have the "Premier Drafts", which are drafts against bots but they only cost 5000 gold. Still the equivalent of 3 packs, still have good rewards, still let you get gems. Those in particular are a great deal if you have the patience for them. The gameplay isn't as good cause it's more about exploiting the bot's weaknesses, but that might not be all that relevant to you.

The only caveat to all this I'm saying is that you'll probably want to do some light research on the set you're drafting just to make sure you don't get pubstomped. It doesn't need to be anything too extensive, but just some light reading will do you good. For example, there's this guy called chord_o_calls that has a podcast. Whenever a new set comes out, he always links in his website a tier list of the best cards and archetypes to draft. It just takes you like 10 minutes to read through that and get a gist of it, so that you know which bombs you can never pass and which cards you would do well to build around. As you draft more and more, you'll probably get bored of trying to do the optimal strategy and every time and just start janking it up with weaker but funnier cards.

TL;DR: Install Arena as soon as you can and grind up a bit. You should at the very least try giving FF draft a try before you just burn all your gold opening FF packs.

2/2

Just buy physical singles when the set drops in paper. You'll get more value out of just collecting cards you like rather than trying to seriously play this in an actual game. Especially because this is intended as a commander format set(100 card highlander multiplayer format) rather than a regular standard format set which these cards are all legal in but the vast bulk are legendary cards anyway so you can only play one copy in a deck.

Thanks lad

I just wanna have the jpegs, I'm not really planning on playing after I get a few

Final Fantasy I is just not gonna get much stuff because nearly everything from it has been done better in games that came after. If the fiends show up, for example, they'd be the IV versions.

XIV versions*

I just wanna have the jpegs

Yeah, just buy the physical cards you want when the physical set drops. If the cards are too expensive then you can also try buying cards from the actual Final Fantasy TCG instead.

Are you the same guy who says that in the FFXIV threads?

Just realized that I forgot to post Final Fantasy 4 like an absolute FOOL

Pretty sure people were just trolling. How the hell was a 6 mana card ever gonna be playable, even with fling.

Borderlands is closer to getting one than Clair Obscure Expedition 69

kek

Wait a minute. That's XIV's adaptation of the Lunar Whale. Original art for comparison.

They add in Krile, they choose the fucking irrelevant ffxiv version

Even in cards that aren't marked as XIV's, XIV manages to worm its way in

Also, does XIV have a single original thing? Why does it have everything that is in every other game?

Prease understand, we needed space for 3 more Clouds and 20 more FF14 cards (assorted).

Basically just Emet Selch. You can't even really say the whole Hydaelin and Zodiark thing because literally the other MMO already had the crystal mommy sunder the dark god into pieces so he can't kill himself to cause the end times.

Kefka, Sephiroth and Emet-Selch. The canonical unholy trinity.

You must be mistaken, friend! See, you seem to be missing a few games there, after all. Surely they wouldn't just release a set and not give every game at least one mythic! Haha, what a silly mistake to make.

8tards btfo

62c.png - 657x527, 266.15K

A random Ascian is a mythic

Why? Is there a mtg reason for this?

It's a reprint of an extremely popular MTG card that used to be really powerful. Honestly, I'm not sure if it's good enough to be competitive now. But it's definitely the card that is gonna have any Magic veteran get at least a bit excited when they see that it's back in Standard. Besides that, it was only in Standard when it first debuted 20 years ago.

file.png - 672x936, 1.29M

one for fifteen

it's the fucking turtle

fuck gay ass world

God Y'shtola is so fucking SHIT
6 mana for that is not worth it

Even now, 16 years later, the Lightning shilling remains unstoppable

Guys, cards you care about being rare instead of mythic is a good thing. Mythic usually just means complexity and forced scarcity, not even power. And in this case it doesn't even mean complexity cause the meld card from 13 isn't a mythic.
