I started my first Engage Maddening run weeks ago, but stopped at Yunaka's chapter because I know I'm going to get anxiety over what the "good" choices are for builds.

Always invest in Marianne’s lance skill. Not only do you get unlock the best magic combat art in the game early, it paves the way for and makes leveling her in pegasus knight much easier which does miracles for her speed.

I'm finding some validity to 3H's "turn everyone into wyvern riders" problem where previously I didn't believe it at all. Wyvern Rider is very easy to get into compared to most other Advanced Classes and every single unit in the game should work towards ~C Axes to get into Brigand or Armour Knight for the DEF boost. Hell, Wyvern Rider gets a significant STR boost so you probably want to put your mages there after Armour Knight so they have good DEF and aren't weighed down by spells, though you'll likely need C+ Axes. The only other axe classes in advanced are Hero, Warrior and Fortress Knight, requiring all-in on axes, or splitting into another proficiency. That leaves Wyvern Rider, with such easy requirements Cyril can get into it almost immediately with a lucky roll and minimum investment.

You might do it by accident, but the conditions vary based on your route.
Basically, you need to find a way to reach her employer before fighting her. Beating her causes Jeralt to appear, and killing him makes her give up on life. So you need to cut Jeralt's funding to make them surrender.
I would honestly just look it up. I can't even tell you how to do it, because as I said, it varies by route.

Unless it's a star unit, my feeling about mages in FE is usually the same as archers. As in, they are mostly only there to counter a specific type of unit.

Really? Enemy units tend to have piss poor RES, so I almost always find mages way more useful to carry around than archers.

If you ever see generic units with gold in the emblem paralogues, it means they're a stand-in for a named enemy unit from the original game. If it was Sigurd's paralogue, those were Julius and Ishtar, who are quite literally the final bosses of Genealogy.

If they get enough speed to double things, sure. In that case they might become a star unit. Most mages barely have the speed to double generals sadly (slight exaggeration)

I've been playing Three Hopes I've been enjoying it but I'm really disappointed with the named enemies. Byleth starts showing up again and it's supposed to be a big deal when he does but he gets stun locked for 20 seconds then he leaves. I haven't played much of Dynasty Warriors so I don't know if that's standard fare. The classes are alright, however a lot of them feel the same and I'm not sure the character abilities will be enough to make the other two houses feel new when I get to them. I doubt Catherine and Alois are going to get something that greatly separates them from Holst and Hilda and I was looking forward to doing relic + magic with Annette.

Yeah, they're a group I only ever fight if I have Emblem Corrin. You use all of your Engage attacks in one turn to smash them to pieces. Otherwise, I avoid them.
Basically, watch out for any units with gold. They usually have a gimmick, like multiple healthbars, a specific weapon, etc. But sometimes they just exist as references, like how Ilyana was in Ike's map as just a generic mage.

Sounds like you're playing Golden Dumpsterfire first. That's good to get Shez the Shamshir early and to have it for NG+ on other routes but I really hated the rest of the route, especially the ending otherwise. I think BL gives the largest roster and it's the one I did Maddening on.

You know I just realized how absolutely fucking overpowered assign decoy is. I didn't even need to retreat everyone else. Just keep decoy up on my highest dodge unit at all times and both of them are just sitting ducks for the entire rest of my team to whack at for free exp.

Yes, the dlc is extremely broken and should not be used in a first run. Every bracelet is effectively two emblems at once, and their presence also ignores the story.
Like, when you get robbed by Veyle, you keep your bracelets. There's even a 6v6 fight in the game with rings, but you can bring 7 bracelets so it's 13v6.

It's just not feasible to put most units into Wyvern Rider, though physical units do fit in very easily. You'll run out of flying Battallions and putting your class' designated mage/healer/archer in there beyond the initial certification for stat boosts is daft.
