Reach has less depth than military shooters like battlefield 3 and modern warfare 2. Halo was not the platform for a military shooter.
the only good halo game was 1 and even then most of its quality comes from the writing and art design not the gameplay
-shrugs-
I enjoyed it more than 3's.
wasn't the only major plot conflict Cortana? She was already with Chief and company on Pillar of Autumn in the book but in Halo Reach she is handed off by Noble Six.
There's also complaints about how the dates just don't line up and the planet is just very underwhelming compared to how it's described. Also the covenant somehow manages to sneak behind the planet's defenses when it's supposed to be the most fortified planet humanity had at the time.
The campaign was cool and fun. I dont read videogame books so I don't care if it contradicts anything. I think it's cool your job transforms from suppressing terrorism, to fighting covenant, to watching as the planet utterly loses and you realize you just need to evacuate.
halo 2 and reach are the only good games in the series
What makes it so good? I've found it pretty underwhelming. Unlike the previous ones there's no change of enemies or level design, so you're just killing the same covenant in different gray and brown shades of wide open industrial areas until you reach the "SURVIVE" mission and then it's over. It's also really lacking on the arsenal, most of it is just the same bulpup rifle again and again...
no change in environment
Huh? Nearly every mission is a different environment.
Winter Contingency
Grassy with lots of trees and streams, lots of hills. In the mountains with some concrete complexes scattered around
Oni: Sword Base
High tech industrial base. Half the mission is outside driving around between outposts, the ground is orangeish/red with dead grass. Inside the base is mostly gray industrial
Nightfall
Entire mission is at night. Most of it outside. You don't spend much time indoors, concrete base when you do.
Tip if the spear
Entirely outside, or within covenant bases. No human industrial shit whatsoever. Brown and purple mostly
Long night of solace
You are on the planet for maybe 5 minutes then you get in a space ship for a while and then are on a covenant ship. Very varied environment overall, mostly blue and purple
Exodus
Civilian sector, not industrial. Very white, also an outside section with a lot of greenery
New Alexandria
Flying mission at night, spend half the time in a falcon. When you do land, it's varying degrees of civilian architecture, hospitals, clubs, businesses, all with different color palettes.
The Package
Oni: Sword Base but in the evening. Much more on the oranges and reds with all the fire, but that's only the first half of the mission. Second half is underground in the ice, very blue and white.
Pillar of Autumn
You don't stay put here much at all until the end. Most of it is spent traveling out in the open, lots of brown mixed with industrial zones with the sky full of combat
Lone Wolf
Map is foggy and it's hard to see. Scattered buildings, mostly running around outside. A lot of brown
That argument can only be made to maybe 1/3rd of the missions so this is just dishonesty or you haven't played in a while.
As for the weaponry, it's hardly less diverse than the other games. You get your rifles, pistol, shotgun, rockets, sniper, and then you can steal weapons from the covenant.
They are samey. The skybox having a different color doesn't change how every place has the same layout: Lots of flat ground, grey concrete blocks and narrow corridors for the billionth grunt to spawn. And despite the appearences, all guns DO feel the same. They're just the battle rifle and the sniper rifle again with different paintjobs, covenant guns included.
Reach's campaign is boring, it shits all over the Fall of Reach, and Bungie's canon is all that matters even today. Your only mistake was not telling the little faggot to fuck off with his nerd book that nobody cares about.
Trump won. Kys tranny
Check your reading comprehension. Do I sound like a leftist to you?
get off the books and go outside nerd
read the book after playing CE
thought it was neat
played the game on release
thought it was neat
Yes. Now go back to your reddit/discord tranny shithole you zoom-zoom trourist esl nigger.
Both the books and the game is shit. I still enjoy the game despite its poor quality. Marcus Lehto getting so much creative control was a disaster for Halo's identity.
It's strange to me you had this impression. The lack of Flood and brutes is noticable but that wasn't really the point of the game. They added skirmishers and engineers plus a new covenant vehicle.
There are more guns in Reach than any of the other games. The dmr is controversial but I found it preferable to the br.
As far as missions go they definitely do follow a general scenery but you literally leave the planet and board a covenant ship just like in the other games. That other guy pretty much covered everything else about the setting.
I think the first contact storyline explains a lot of the simplicity. The player knows what's coming but the characters don't. Playing through humanity's first interaction with the covenant (minus Harvest) is very cool and was executed well.
Bonus: the mp was very fun and except for a couple of balancing issues it was easily the best in the series.
I don’t care about bookshot but I find the gameplay of reach to be easily the worst of the bungie games.
The game throws cannon fodder at you constantly like Grunts and skirmishers. More so than past games to make battles “bigger” but just make them tedious.
Brutes are giganerfed basically turned into big grunts
Elites are the only fun ones but they didn’t know how to make them harder other than cracking up the shield health.
You get the DMR in every mission. Making every encounter basically a point and click fest.
Good luck trying to use other weapons when every gun is giganerfed.
Expect when the enemy uses them like the concussion rifle being shit in your hand but can 2 tap you when an elite wields it.
Your Spartan allies are more braindead than marines so bungie had to make them invincible.
Missions are either big open empty areas like winter contingency or linear hallways. Never strikes the balance of 3.
I never really go back to reach the same way I do 1,2 and 3.
I enjoyed Halo 3 for its custom games. Playing Fat Kid on Foundry, Smear the Queer, ghostbusters, jenga, all of those creative games made me enjoy it more than anything else. Reach just didn't have that. It felt like it was more focused on being competitive than having fun and I never found a single custom game that I enjoyed. In addition, I didn't care about any of the spartans dying. It was the ODST situation again where I just didn't care about the cast of characters. Unironically, Halo 2 has my favorite story. To me, it feels like an epic and has that grandiose feel to it that makes you truly feel like a hero in a story.
I can't speak for the multiplayer since i haven't touched it yet, but the campaign just felt like a blur to me. It's serviceable but there's something missing to it, none of the levels felt particularly fun to me and the characters were forgettable with the exception of maybe jorge. This sucks since the people who got me into halo on the first place said it's the best, but it's just not for me. Guess i got overhyped or something.
Pretty much this
Long Night of Solace is a kickass ship name.
Halo had really good ship names.
A lot of this is inaccurate.
bigger battles show off better tech and make sense for an invasion
brutes are hilariously easy in any game. In 3 you can literally one shot them with the br
elites were given a pretty sophisticated AI for the time. They actually react to your actions and play tactically.
Halo is always a point click game. In 1 it was the pistol, 2 and 3 had the br. There's literally no difference.
The other guns are perfectly fine. The sniper is a one-shot except on legendary against gold elites. Other effective weapons are the plasma launcher, grenade launcher, focus rifle, plasma repeater. If anything it's incongruous that so many additional weapons exist in a prequel.
if you're expecting enemies to not do more damage to you especially on higher difficulties I don't know what to tell you. Rocket flood and jackal snipers from 2 and suicide grunts in 3 would kill you instantly all the time.
marines have sucked in every game. You still had Johnson, shipmaster, and arbiter who are all invincible. If you don't like playing with a team of Spartans who literally all die then I think you just don't like Halo.
3 had the Ark and Halo which are both massive open areas. Reach's mission locations are no worse than any other in the series except maybe 2.
I liked the space birds
Reach's campaign is bor-
WE'VE BEEN ENGAGED
FIVE AND SIX, CLEAR THE HOLE
Did noble six crash landed from orbit with nothing but his armor after detonating a slip space engine and was completely fine? How does that work?
I definitely agree that the Spartan characters should've been better written. There's no real connection to Noble team. I kind of like that though since the point is they're not special and don't get remembered.
The MP is fun. You should check it out of anyone still plays. The banshee is completely broken and armor lock is gay but otherwise it's great.
Master Chief survived something similar in the beginning of Halo 3. Guess spartan armor is built to last.
Reach is hyped up to be military stronghold of Humanity
Only 20 orbital mac stations as opposed to Earth's 300
When Covenant forces land in the middle of a desert on Reach, instead of bombarding the entire area with missles, artillery and nukes, UNSC launches full frontal assault with warthogs and tanks?
When Covenant supercarrier is revealed, again instead of bombarding it with every available assest they have including nukes, they retreat on their own planet?
Can't use nukes cause they're on the other side of planet? (Apparently ICBM's don't exist)
Have to jury rig an engine just to take it out.
Apparenly military stronghold planet doesn't have any anti air defense or scrambles every available ship to try to overwhelm it
Original lore, Reach falls in 24 hours yet game retcons it to a month which makes no sense
Halo Reach was such a fucking let down. Fall of Reach was made out to be such an apocalyptic event yet in game doesn't feel like it. I was expecting nukes to be dropping left and right out of sheer desperation. The entire game should have been like the CoD MW2 Washington DC levels. Pure panic, desperation and dread. Entire cities and divisions being wiped out. One massive retreat as UNSC throws everything they have at the enemy as a desperate attempt to slow down the onslaught. Essentially like the War of the Worlds scene times 100. UNSC response in game was laughable and made zero sense.
Pic fucking related
Armor lock. Also Chief did basically the same thing in Halo 2.
Pissbabies will still defend this shit writing because they wasted their childhood playing this garbage. It was the first Halo they ever touched, so OF COURSE it HAS to be the best Halo game ever
You jest but this is unironically my honest opinion.
I'm not sure what game you guys played. Dialogue in the game talks about using every piece of weaponry in existence to try stopping the ships but nothing works until the mac blast. Also why would humanity build more than 20 orbital platforms when they have literally no idea the covenant exist? On that same note why would the covenant know exactly how to invade a human planet when they basically have never done it? It's guesswork on both sides and the better tech ends up winning in the end.
I can appreciate the book's version as it makes for better reading but the same exact chain of events wouldn't make a very good Halo game. A drawn out campaign made more sense and was executed well from a writing perspective. You even get your fix at the end in a desolated wasteland surrounded by burning ships doing a desperate last stand.
Young me was not wise enough to save links to sources like I do now but apparently one reason TFoR wasn't adapted is due to a very large-scale battle for the orbital generators not being feasible at the time.
They could've probably gotten away with hiding a lot of the battlefield by playing with sightlines, using trenches, craters, hills, etc. but having the two Covenant ships come down and close-range glass stuff + them getting bombarded with MACs was apparently too hot for the engine to handle.
With that said there's still plenty about Reach I'd do differently and some years after it came out even its Creative Director thinks some of the older games aged better in terms of gameplay.
Noble team
Spartan III's but instead of wearing SPI, they wear Mjolnir
Fucking why? The entire point of Spartan III's was to make cheap disposable Spartans since Mjolnir armor and the augmentation to use them was stupid expensive. It would have been cool to have a stealth based Halo game. Literally no reason to make them Spartan III's if they were going to be indistinguishable from II's.
Also fuck the power ranger colors of the armor. They look way more intimidating and serious with green armor
Yeah chief supposedly falls from 2k meters in 3s beginning which also doesn't make any sense since he was inside the covenant ship at the end of 2. Anyway if the spartan armor can take that no probs it should be impervious to most types of damage. And if armor lock is supposed to function like it does in game (reach) it doesn't last nearly the 1+ hours it would take until you reach ground assuming the spartan has hit terminal velocity.
Because if the characters don't look like master chief then it's not halo. Same reason why marines and odst soldiers were redesigned to look like mini-master chiefs
loved watching kat get 360 jackelscoped in this game
Maybe the shield has some kind of orbital free fall protection or something. At the end of the day it's a video game. Suspension of disbelief can be extended to a lot of stuff in sci-fi.
I just want a Halo game where you play as a regular marine grunt and it captures the fucking dread of fighting a losing war and escaping a planet getting glassed
Reach campaign is really awesome if you want to join the military and go to boot camp and think Osama did all that but once you grow up you start to realize that Haze on the PS3 was more hype than Reach’s campaign.
Games first, books second. Simple as that.
Does that make Reach's story good? Not particularly, but it's enough to get you to shoot shit.
A lot of this is inaccurate.
Ironic.
bigger battles show off better tech and make sense for an invasion.
I wasn’t saying that bigger battles didn’t make sense. I said that they were bad for gameplay since bungie just spammed shit tier enemies like grunts and skirmishers.
brutes are hilariously easy in any game. In 3 you can literally one shot them with the br.
While brutes are bad in 3 they do have shields (making one shots impossible) and make up for this in numbers. Besides it’s Reach’s problem for making the easier instead of fixing the issues from 3.
elites were given a pretty sophisticated AI for the time. They actually react to your actions and play tactically.
Again not what I said the issue was that bungie just upped the health % of the higher ranking elites instead of did making them more new. Like the chieftains in 3 being immune to plasma grenades sticky.
Halo is always a point click game. In 1 it was the pistol, 2 and 3 had the br. There's literally no difference.
You needed to actually aim with the BR tough since they where projectile weapons. The DMR is closer to a begged up covenant carbon than the BR.
The other guns are perfectly fine.
Eh the plasma repeater is just a worse plasma rifle and the focus rifle is just a reskinned sentinel beam. I could go over other weapons but it’s a wall of text already.
You still had Johnson, shipmaster, and arbiter who are all invincible.
They aren’t though. They can get knocked out in combat until you clear out all enemies. The issue with reach was more how much focus bungie put on how “badass” noble is and how “The lone wolf stuff stay behind” then you basically do everything in combat sticks out more when bungie put more focus on it.
3 had the Ark and Halo which are both massive open areas.
But levels are actually pretty small. Halo for example is basically just the 3 small lifeboat arenas connected through a small canyon..
That's basically ODST except worse and with truly terrible characters.
reach is mentioned as first strike by covenant in games
show how it fell
I didn’t need to read shit and I picked up on that.
ODST is such an overrated game. Its just a lazy reskin of Halo 3. Game could have been challenging if you fought against Elites but Bungie in their retarded wisdom removed them
I like ODST but I agree that they were too lazy with the concept. It could have been much better than it was.
Of all the Battle Rifles, the Halo 3 version is my favorite. Its so simple and I always loved the little ball charging handle. And it sounded the nicest
Halo 1 > Halo 3 > Halo 2 > Halo Reach > Halo 3 ODST
Re-entry pack + armor can lock up using the wonder of the gel layer. Trade-off being that you can't move when that lock-up function is on.
Impact is also a different kind of damage than bullets trying to pierce a section/plasma trying to melt. Possible to make something like that in real life? Who knows. But sci-fi lets you stretch reality a bit.
Although there are technologies that exist now where running a current through some materials causes them to take on a state solid enough to stop bullets. In a setting with AI, starships and slipspace, yeah, not too much of a stretch.
they needed to make 1 more halo game to get out of the microsoft contract so they shat out odst. in that context its pretty crazy how the game ended up being good
Game was made in less than a year so that lead to lack of time to actually go full-blast with it. As for leadership deciding to do 2 spin-offs instead of pursuing the 3 (or more) games that would be needed to the events they had roughly planned for after 3? I think everyone can agree now that Bungie would've been better off doing that instead of being quick to start making Destiny. That figure of 3 or more games comes from an interview with Marcus about how just 2 games (all that was left in their Microsoft contract) wouldn't have been enough to tell the events planned after 3.
I wasn’t saying that bigger battles didn’t make sense. I said that they were bad for gameplay since bungie just spammed shit tier enemies like grunts and skirmishers.
What did you expect? A bunch of new aliens and the Flood as pets? It's a prequel. The fact that skirmishers exist at all is a miracle and doesn't even really make sense. Otherwise it seems like you're complaining you have to shoot a bunch of enemies in a shooting game
While brutes are bad in 3 they do have shields (making one shots impossible) and make up for this in numbers. Besides it’s Reach’s problem for making the easier instead of fixing the issues from 3.
Not all the brutes in 3 have shields. Each brute usually has 4-5 grunts so the numbers thing is exactly the same. Brutes later on literally had invincibility power ups and cloaking tech. Making them easier while elites are more difficult makes perfect sense.
Again not what I said the issue was that bungie just upped the health % of the higher ranking elites instead of did making them more new. Like the chieftains in 3 being immune to plasma grenades sticky.
Just like I said. They gave them a more sophisticated AI so they behave tactically. What did you want? Nipple tassels and a third arm?
You needed to actually aim with the BR tough since they where projectile weapons. The DMR is closer to a begged up covenant carbon than the BR.
Leading shots is not a requirement of any Halo game. Bullets teleport to the target no matter what gun you're using. If anything the dmr is slightly harder to use because of bloom.
Eh the plasma repeater is just a worse plasma rifle and the focus rifle is just a reskinned sentinel beam. I could go over other weapons but it’s a wall of text already.
The point is they're usable and can even be viable. You choosing to not use other guns doesn't make them bad.
They aren’t though. They can get knocked out in combat until you clear out all enemies. The issue with reach was more how much focus bungie put on how “badass” noble is and how “The lone wolf stuff stay behind” then you basically do everything in combat sticks out more when bungie put more focus on it.
So Spartans are cooler than other characters? Sounds correct to me.
But levels are actually pretty small. Halo for example is basically just the 3 small lifeboat arenas connected through a small canyon..
Halo in Halo 3 is a massive level traversed via hornet and includes a giant empty place where you fight two scarabs.
What game would you have rather seen instead of ODST?
Open question.
Why the fuck is there no gore in halo?
I think I like how it and the armor have a little more mass in 3, not that I ever felt 2's armor was too slim or the rifle too small, just preferred 3's designs over all
What game would you have rather seen instead of ODST?
I would have loved a squad based ODST game instead of just a reskin fps Halo game. FPS works best for Halo when you're playing as a super soldier 1 man army with energy shields. Playing as a regular human, gameplay would have been better suited as a squad based game where you have to use tactics fighting off against waves of enemy and enemies with energy shields.
t. didn't spend an hour smacking an elite's body to paint the floor blue
Halo in Halo 3 is a massive level traversed via hornet and includes a giant empty place where you fight two scarabs.
NTA but that's The Covenant, Halo is the final mission on 3.
It's probably the 2nd best gameplay wise IMO behind Halo 3 for me.
try to enjoy infinite
realize not only are their artists slopfest shitters when it comes to actual cosmetics, but they don't know how to design their way out of a paper bag
just mostly stuck to Firefight, except i can't even list the number of times i just spontaneously and instantly die because they also can't balance PvE for shit
why am i still playing this crap
Reach's campaign was fun as fuck. Sure, it contradicted the novel, but both were good stories.
It was just the pvp that was AIDs.
Also, obligatory Deliver Hope trailer. RIP Thom-A293: youtube.com
>"bungie's canon is the only one that matters"
correct
/thread
What did you expect?
Fun gameplay
Otherwise it seems like you're complaining you have to shoot a bunch of enemies in a shooting game
I want to play halo not call of duty.
Not all the brutes in 3 have shields
No ALL brutes in 3 have shields it’s just that the effects for the shields getting hit in 3 are subtle. They improved it in ODST.
has 4-5 grunts so the numbers thing is exactly the same
No 3 usually throws more brute combinations at you. 3 engine can’t handle as many enemies as Reach’s so you usually fight a smaller number of enemies that are on average stronger than reach’s barring the elites.
Brutes later on literally had invincibility power ups and cloaking tech.
Yeah and that added variety and made the fun to fight. Compared to the Reach brutes.
What did you want? Nipple tassels and a third arm?
More variety like the aforementioned 3 chieftain brutes. 3 has equipment that the brutes could throw out like the bubble shield. Maybe the higher ranking elites could use the drop shield for example. A lot of the higher ranking elites in reach are basically normal elites with +10 health.
Leading shots is not a requirement of any Halo game.
Yeah let’s just forget about the fuel rod gun, rocket launcher, brute shot and literally every single plasma weapon while we are at it to?
If anything the dmr is slightly harder to use because of bloom.
Bloom spread is randomized and isn’t better than just aiming with the BR.
The point is they're usable and can even be viable.
Having more shit for the sake of having more shit is stupid. Especially since the DMR invalidates everything else anyway.
So Spartans are cooler than other characters?
Cat being infamous for driving of a cliff isn’t “cool”.
Halo in Halo 3 is a massive level traversed via hornet.
The argument isn’t that the levels are big but how they use the space.
giant empty place where you fight two scarabs.
It isn’t fucking empty if you fight two fucking scarabs in it.
I thought it was one of their best campaigns. I dunno.
ODST is liked for the atmosphere that night New Mombasa and the soundtrack provide. Without those it'd be forgettable.
I like ODST for Firefight and a general rebalancing of pve compared to base 3.
What the fuck are you talking about the invasion of Reach is 27 years into the Covenant war.
bait so good i give a (You)
same for jerome in halo wars 2
you guys did beat all the halos on laso right?
Tell us a good shooter
Inb4 reddit-life 2
the ENTIRE fucking fleet that was usually stationed at Reach ummmm just so happened to be out on a 'training exercise' when the world ended
Why is there no Halo boomer shooter made by a small side studio? The genre is still trendy and Halo could be good and conquer an older playerbase
Not 5
I can't play Reach anymore because I had to buy a new 360 and for some reason some copies of reach just don't play on some models of 360 for no reason, it's fucking weird.
Of course I could just buy more copies since it's like $5 at every thrift store, but still.
solo or coop? that laso solo playlist in mcc scares me
That's because Halo is best when it feels like Quake with big team battles and vehicles. It's not supposed to be a realistic mil sim/shooter.
halo isnt the same without the awkwardly slow movement. it was trying to be like call of duty
Reach's biggest problem is that it expects you to care about your jobber squad.
Because Halo's gameplay is just a slow version of Quake.
Solo Reach, 1, 2, ODST, most of 3 (and the co-op here was more or less carrying the other guy) and Infinite. I did coop and got carried by someone for 4 because I couldn't bring myself to bother playing Halo 4 again. It was the last achievement I got, along with I think 1000 watchers, 2 years later than every other MCC achievement.
And? You could make a quicker paced version of Halo, heck they even did it for Postal
because fps are about mtx and have been since consoles started cranking out call of duty xp boosts
That happens to every location in these games. Zeta Halo for example is also extremely underwhelming compared to how it is described in the books.
Like, it has some weird as fuck animals living in the lower layers of the ring that we never get to see in the game.
Blood :^)
I think boomer shooter is a safe bet when you look how games perform, they're also cheap to produce
Postal; Warhammer and probably other licences that I forget did it
