DMC2 is canon in the sense that the events of the game happened. When DMC4 came out it was set between DMC1 and 2, and 2 was the end of the series because it ended with Dante heading towards an uncertain fate. Then when DMC5 was announced, DMC2 got retconned to happen between 1's anime and 4, and Dante just...got out of the underworld somehow.

Why wouldn't they have an idea of what happened? Even if it's something like "Sparda left for cigarettes and then never returned" they have more of an idea of where he went than any other living thing in the universe.

It's possible his own blood was too tainted for the tower lock, cause of transformation to demon. It's also possible that since his daughter was already there, he just decided to use her, enjoying the challenge to his manipulation abilities.

Some lesser demons can be dealt with via conventional arms. That said, DMC3 does show that in the time it takes for Lady to beat a handful of Hell Prides and Hell Lusts, Dante can clear an entire mission. Literally one of the early missions starts with Lady running into a bunch of Hell Prides, then you play through the mission, and once you beat the mission it FINALLY shows Lady taking them all down.

But I think the issue is that Hell Prides are kinda the limit. And Hell Prides seem to be especially weak compared to some other enemies, as shown by how badly a bunch of Empusas completely wrecked in military in DMC5. But things get way worse when you start showing boss-level threats. The military MIGHT be able to take down lesser demons like Hell Prides and possibly Empusas, but bosses are way too powerful for conventional weapons to work.

Also, Lady is pretty much supposed to be the best of the best as far as human devil hunters go, and she clearly has her limits.

The general powerlevel of basic mooks in DMC seems to be Empusas > Agonofinis > Hell Prides > Scarecrows > Marionettes. It's hard to say for sure, but I think the more substance a demon has, the more powerful it usually is. Marionettes and Scarecrows can't exist without possessing something and they're highly limited by the capabilities of their mediums so they seem to be the weakest. Marionettes are just normal wood so they seem less robust than Scarecrows.

Hell Prides seem to be relatively stronger, but the fundamental weaknesses of the Sins is that they all use sand as mediums, meaning they're still kinda flimsy. They can take more bullets than Marionettes, but once you scatter them enough they probably can't maintain their forms anymore.

Finis demons seem to be way more robust than any of these due to being made of metal and bones. Empusas don't even need to take possession of a medium, and thanks to the Qliphoth they can just exist in our reality without any issue. No need to possess wood or sand or metal or anything. Subsequently, they seem to be the strongest of the basic mooks.

Castlevania has a story and arguably the Netflix anime's portrayal of Trevor, Sypha, and Alucard is much more of a character assassination than Dante and Lady, but people including Anon Babble loved it.

I'm positive that prime Lady (somewhere between DMC4 and DMC5) could absolutely destroy any boss that pre-DT Nero could handle.

Obviously DMC4 DT. Dante taking Lady and Trish along to fight Urizen despite knowing that it's Vergil's demon half obviously shows that he trusts their combat abilities and Lady and Trish are implied to be rivals. Since we know Trish is a powerful demon created directly by Mundus, obvious Lady isn't as strong as her, but is most likely relative enough to keep things interesting.
