Did Nintendo finally win by playing the long game?

switch2.jpg - 1220x1220, 172.12K

Yes, Graphics aren't going to get any better than Gen 9, as much as companies like Rockstar hate it Photorealism is not economically sustainable

graphics race is over but the tech race isn't, without a SSD you're gonna be looking at a long generation of game key cards bc companies dont want to pay out the ass for the express game cards

If by win you mean nearly all modern and future games will skip the platform, again.

pcs keep coming better equipped at less cost

fucking laptops can play most decent games nowadays.

Feels like nobody cares about Switch 2. Maybe I'm just projecting.

It has 8 million preorders, anon.

All modern and future games are running on it no problem

uhhh modern games are struggling to run on the ps5, some are even struggling on high end pcs so the ps6 would struggle with those too.

name 4 examples

It won't even get MHW.

they're using queues and shit for preorders to cut down on scalping, i'm sure some of it is still botted though

Yes, instantly, and journos were saying nintendo had a massive hit on their hands. I doubt the switch2 will do that badly but judging it by preorders to diehards and scalpers is dumb. We won't know until the holidays.

for ps5?
dragon's dogma 2
monster hunter wilds
ff16
baldurs gate 3(act 3)

same list pretty much works for pc too

enjoy the ports of 10 years old games bro

I think nintendo won by having exclusives. Compared to sony and microsoft nintendo makes games. They have a huge back catalog of ips they can use aswell. I want sega to come back. since they are the only ones that can compete with nintendo.

Feels like nobody cares about Switch 2. Maybe I'm just projecting.

Yup.

The graphics race is finally over

cope, ML/AI improvements to upscaling/DLSS on the way and they will reduce game development costs
the switch has always been two generations behind hardware wise, reminder that the ps6 is dropping in 2027 and the new xbawks even sooner than that
if you want to experience the latest and greatest while not having to deal with pc fats you purchase a playstation console, literally zero competition in the AAA home console market

enjoy the ports of 10 years old games bro

He says, while gulping down $110 repacks of games from 2013 and Elder Scrolls remasters from 20 years ago.

My guess is that it’ll sell about as well as the 3ds

Oblivion, Silent Hill 2, Indiana Jones, probably the new Doom game
I can't think of anything else.

Preorders were up again on Walmart for a few hours this morning. So no, retailers are throttling preorders they haven't sold out all 8 million.

I can see sony try to push for more powerful/graphic intensive games to screw nintendo over with the “nintendo’s systems are underpowered” narrative

modern AAA games become so power hungry that even the switch 2 can’t run them without serious concessions, if at all

”Wow, the switch is so weak it can’t even run modern games. But you know what system CAN?”

This. Once those come out and games are made to take advantage of their power, nintendo’s right back to square one like where they were with the first switch. You won’t be seeing any modern games for switch 2

I actually double checked Wario64's account. The first reports of Walmart having stock again were 12 hours ago and people were still able to place orders 5 hours ago. So that's 7 hours of being able to easily preorder it.

After the fanboys stopped hyping up the preorders, I haven't heard anything else

The switch 2 is a PS4 without the main PS4 flaw that was the hard drive.
Worst media speed x memory size ratio of everything but cassete games.
On the absolute best case (hard drive peaking at 100MB/s reading a single file), it still takes 80 seconds to fill the entire memory.
The neo geo CD in comparison takes 40 seconds on the same condition (6MB RAM, 150KB/s of the single speed CD-ROM drive).
The PS4 only has faster loads than the neo geo CD because the games that use close to the whole memory all do streaming shit, and use narrow corridors and all that to pretend they finished loading.
And even with that you can bet your bottom dollar they still had to cripple the fuck out of the texture resolutions to make it work, and games like FF7R frequently have texture streaming problems due pushing the limit too far.

Also the switch 2 has 12GB of memory.

High-end gaming hardware is not going to be cheap. You can list down as many "demanding" current gen games as you can, but the next question is whether these games justify the cost of high-end hardware. The only game on that list with both good critical and user reception is BG3. Is it worth buying a $700+ console or $1500 GPU for quality AAA releases that are so few and far between? At least the Switch 2 comes out swinging hard, with Mario Kart, Donkey Kong, Hyrule Warriors 3, Kirby Air Riders, cross-gen Pokemon Legends legends may as well replace mainline and cross-gen Metroid Prime. Can't really say the same about the high-end consoles.

same list pretty much works for pc too

Beautiful part about PC is that you can cut corners and play 99% of every game ever made with a mediocre budget build. I'd rather play Astlibra, Tokyo Xtreme Racer, RPG Maker games, and Yellow Taxi Goes Vroom over those listed games. AAA isn't as strong as it used to be during the PS4 gen.

Did Nintendo finally win by playing the long game?

Maybe, but I think that’s more to due with their success in cultivating a loyal consumer base (regardless of the way Nintendo treats them). There’s a strong emotional connection to Nintendo in a way that other consoles lack.

Personally, I think the Switch was a bit of a letdown, and the Switch 2 appears to heading further down a path that I don’t like. However, it’s not like the major competitors are any better, so there’s another reason people shrug off complaints about Nintendo. Steam Deck is technically a good middle ground for a lot of people, but I also cannot recommend it to everyone (googling issues is unironically asking too much for most people).

Better than that for sure. 3DS crashed and burned because it had no games, this one is launching with 2 bangers in the opening months as a steady stream of titles for the next few years. It's going to cruise past 120 Million easily, no idea if it will do any better than that.

The switch 2 is a PS4 without the main PS4 flaw that was the hard drive

It also has a better CPU/GPU than the PS4, AI upscaling, more control options, etc.

Also the switch 2 has 12GB of memory.

Meanwhile the Series S has 10GB of RAM with 2GB wasted by its bloatware OS. The Switch 2 will be fine. It's within the PS4 Pro/XSS range but with a better CPU than the Pro and more RAM than the XSS. The Switch 2 will be fine.

You'll hate me for mentioning Genshin Impact, but from what I've seen it's graphics are about on par with Zelda BOTW. Genshin Impact runs on phones. You don't need a Switch to experience modernist games. Graphics capability means nothing in the current world of flat 3D and cel shading art styles

I hate that you're right.
The jaguar cores were just fucking trash., and 8GB of memory is retarded.

Next gen cel shading will probably be tensor core crap, with basic cel shading being filtered to look like actual anime.

astlibra is an incredible game, i'd recommend it over any new aaa game any day of the week. but this issue of new big budget games being difficult to run will only get more pronounced, i have no idea how black myth wukong runs on a ps5 but on pc it's pretty damn hard to run so i imagine it runs like shit on ps5. devs keep getting worse at optimizing, unless ai can somehow cover their asses the switch 2 will most likely start to have games miss it like the switch 1 has been going through these past few years.

fwiw, i'm not but i do think he's right to an extent when even the ps5 can't run these new games and is much stronger. the switch 2 has frame gen right now but when the ps6/new xbox comes out in 2 years they will have frame gen just like the switch 2 and all games will take advantage of that to run at 60(or more realistically 30 fps) so the weaker switch 2 hardware will be left in the dust unless nintendo does a new 3ds sort of revision which didn't happen with the switch 1.

basically the old adage of

you're retarded if you buy a switch for third party games

still holds true. it's a console for first party nintendo games, if you get some other games on it cool but don't expect massive support outside of back ports which is exactly what happened w/ the switch 1.

Maybe, but I think that’s more to due with their success in cultivating a loyal consumer base (regardless of the way Nintendo treats them).

Unless you're a jobless Youtuber who has nothing but video game news to rant about, most people don't care. The relationship has always been an emotionless transaction. Nintendo makes cool shit, and people buy it. Jobless Youtubers try their damnest to make it seem like there's more depth to this relationship than that because they have nothing but vidya news in their lives.

Steam Deck is technically a good middle ground for a lot of people, but I also cannot recommend it to everyone (googling issues is unironically asking too much for most people)

Everyone's heard of the Steam Deck by now. It has nothing to do with "googling issues." With how massive PC gaming is, trouble shooting issues is not a concern for most gamers. Have you ever heard of NIMBY? The Steam Deck is a large, ugly device. Its lack of aesthetic turns people away from it. Aesthetics matter A LOT when trying to sell a product which is why the WiiU tablet flooped and why that mini-fridge, the Xbox Series X, is currently flopping much to the ire of Youtubers. Furthermore, the aggressive Steam Deck shilling on every platform further alienates people from wanting a Deck. God forbid a guy says he's interested in the next Nintendo game or system else he'll summon a bunch of Decktards that'll try to debate him over his own interests.
Lastly, nobody wants to troubleshoot a fucking portable. They want to turn on the device, play a quick game for 15 minutes and put it away without the fear of the system shitting itself.

ps6/new xbox comes out in 2 years

Either not happening or it will be the smallest generation jump ever made.
Moore's law is dead and replaced by a "if you want more transistors, you need to pay more" scheme.
We can't just shrink the mask and get twice the transistors for the same price every 18 months anymore, now is more of a "we invent better, smaller transistors on basically the same manufacturing process", and they cost extra.
Memory size and SSDs are still growing quickly because we can do chip sandwich now.
The switch 2 memory if i'm not mistaken is like a 4 or 8 die sandwich.

Either not happening or it will be the smallest generation jump ever made.

Or they could charge like $1200 for a 2x uplift from the base consoles. Not like that would help much, seeing as how most of the ps5 pro patches are basically offering nothing over the base game

if it uses the new multi frame gen, that's probably enough to cripple everything else. the last gen ps5 ports, pc requirements will jump to 5000 series cards for every game, and the switch 2 will be left behind without a multi frame gen revision. raster is seeing diminishing returns but the pc market pushing frame gen as an answer to that might be a look at things to come in the console space. sony is already toying with that with pssr on the ps5 pro, it seems likely they push frame gen even harder next gen and when that's the baseline, that's probably when vidya is fucked. we'll see more and more games that run at under 30 fps natively like wu kong on a 5090.

The biggest obstacle for that is that most consumers don't have high end machines.
Limiting your game to "geforce 5xxx" is asking to sell less than 100k copies, and that's not making money friendly.

Aesthetics matter A LOT when trying to sell a product

I agree, it's why I'll never buy a ROG product, the logo alone is ugly enough that I don't care if I miss out on something golden, I just don't want to spend more than a femtosecond looking at it.
The Steam Deck isn't a looker, but it's at least inoffencive. It's worst design crime is just looking kinda dull, imho. You'll never please everyone, but you can still make things look exciting without being hideous.

Jobless Youtubers try their damnest to make it seem like there's more depth to this relationship

No, there’s a decently large number of people who have an emotional connection to Nintendo, online shills excluded. It’s only natural for a product that has been labeled as being primarily for families / kids.

With how massive PC gaming is, trouble shooting issues is not a concern for most gamers

“Gamers” (at least PC gamers) aren’t the biggest consumer of Nintendo. The causal audience and even many of the “hardcore” audience are completely inept at basic troubleshooting (i.e. cannot google search “root folder” or an error code). These people will never get the bang for their buck from a Steam Deck or a PC.

The Steam Deck is a large, ugly device

It really isn’t. Looks much better in person and is more comfortable to use than the Switch.

the aggressive Steam Deck shilling on every platform further alienates people from wanting a Deck

Hate those fags, as well, but the same could be true for every console.

Lastly, nobody wants to troubleshoot a fucking portable.

I agree, but you largely don’t have to do any troubleshooting if you’re doing the basics. I’ve seen some goofy errors when installing in desktop mode (that were easily fixed), but aside from that, the Deck isn’t as unwieldy as people say. It’s just a little more work to get the most out of the device.

I’ll remind you that I’m not shilling this device. I already said I wouldn’t recommend it to most people, simply because most people don’t care about the extra functionality or have the ability to learn the basics required to access said functionality.

new multi frame gen

Have you ever tried regular frame gen let alone multi frame gen? Even on way more powerful gpus it sucks ass unless you're starting from 100fps+ and even then it's arguably a downgrade 99% of the time.
Maybe if we all had 1000hz monitors and games were built to target high refresh rates on mid range processors it would be okay, until then it's garbage and I can't believe Nvidia or anyone else invested time into it.
Even just regular dlss isn't worth it on super low end rtx cards.

My bet is that they will wait for multi chips on die SoCs.
Shrinking the chips is expensive, expanding the die is fucking expensive, designing better arch is expensive, so they have to go to the only place uncorrupted by manufacturing limits, up.
Of course, the thermals need to be solved first, having four stacked 300watt chips would be a pretty horrible idea.

consoles dictate the minimum specs for games, right now the floor is incredibly low because of the series s so people on their 1000 series gpus are mostly fine. if consoles raise the standards with mulit frame gen, then things will get fucked and people will be forced to upgrade. the 6000 series will be out then and the price of 5000 gpus should drop, people would just have to finally ditch their older cards or not care about the aaa slop.

i've used regular frame gen and it's fine. it's obviously worse than playing a game natively but your average normalfag on console isn't going to really know the difference at 60 fps. never forget that consolefags put up with 15 fps blighttown, always assume their standards are in the gutter.

people will be forced to upgrade

Not with 500 dollar cards, the most likely scenario would be a $200-$300 card that use frame gen to be any good, but that would need much better software support.

The graphics race doesn't interest me anymore, and seeing people buy glorified HD packs, like Skyblivion, is sad. I'm the kind of guy who will willingly play an old version of a game, like the SNES version of FF6 and SMRPG, as opposed to the definitive editions. Nothing they add justifies the cost.

It's why I don't get Nintendo's strategy either. Why pay extra money for a glorified HD reskin of a Switch or WiiU game, when I can boot up an emu and get this extra content for free? If it's a good game, like Metroid Prime, I'll still pay for it, but not for the glorified graphical update. That's just a waste of money.

in 2 years we'll have the next generation of gpus. maybe nvidia will give the 6060 a whole 10gb of vram and charge $300 for it again. that might be wishful thinking though, watch it be 8gb again. god forbid we go back to 12gb of vram on a 60 series card.

Why pay extra money for a glorified HD reskin of a Switch or WiiU game

Remake culture is a mystery to me, as well. You’re never going to remake a bad game, so why not do a cheaper port and let the original stand on its own merits? It’s production and consumption without passion.

depends
will third party developers optimize and release their newer titles on the switch 2?
i know ac shadows is coming to the switch 2, but doubt bigger ones like gta 6 will ever make it

Why release a game for less money when you can charge more money for "Remastered" in the title and sell it like it's new?

Yeah, making money is why the remasters exist, but it's hard for a customer to justify buying it unless they're already a brand zealot.

I think for most people and the industry as a whole the test for whether nintendo and the switch 2’s power can match the industry will be GTA6
Sure the switch 2 is getting cyberpunk and SF6, but those are years old games everyone who wanted to play has already played and aren’t perceived of as current-day games. And with GTA6 being one of the most-anticipated games along with it costing more than a pretty penny to develop, rockstar will no doubt wanna cash on on the switch audience, but the lingering question is if they even can. If GTA6 does come to switch 2 as a modern release then everyone will see AND believe that the switch 2 is up to standard and capable. But if rockstar say they can’t do a switch 2 release because the system is just too weak, then it’s gonna be no different than what the switch was when it came to modern releases: too weak

What is physics, what is AI? More like it's over for Anon Babble's circle jerking of Nintendo, since now developers will start focusing on gameplay elements. Just kidding, they'll sacrifice all the physics and AI in the world just to improve the graphics by 1% for the next 20 years. They can also just focus on larger more open world walking simulator, since the walking simulators they currently make are on rails Nintendo are also a subset of jews since they could in theory release a PS5 levels of power console and focus entirely on physics and AI, but don't.

This was Nintendo's chance to reconcile with third parties, but they ended up screwing it up.

The biggest obstacle (literally) is the GTA 6 size.
Graphics and shit is easy, you can always panic button the fuck out of it by running at 400p and scaling up with DLSS crap, and RAM size is fine as the switwo has more memory than the series S

Now if it's a 200GB game, it will be fucked up with the 256GB of storage of the device.

The PS5 has 4 times the CPU power of the PS4, and you don't see ANY improvement in physics or AI over the PS4.
If anything, the AI and physics of modern games probably can run on the emotion engine without any isues.

Now if it's a 200GB game, it will be fucked up with the 256GB of storage of the device.

You know modern GTA fans would still buy it. They'd applaud it even if it needed an additional storage device just to play GTA6.

I liked remasters when they added extra stuff to do, like the FF games on GBA. Now the most you get is concept art and maybe a music player on the main menu or something.

the Wii U situation isn't really comparable, it had a fraction of the amount of stock

Yes, i'm fully aware.
The best solution probably would be to make a express sdcard mandatory to install to it and just suffle stuff around as needed.

Doing some research after this post, the shittiest express SDcard does 150MB/s, which is probably enough.
